a launch will be held for joss whedon as shakespearean moralist: narrative ethics of the bard and the buffyverse, the new book by douglas rabb, a professor emeritus in philosophy, and michael richardson, a professor in the department of english.

“joss whedon as shakespearean moralist contends, somewhat whimsically, that whedon is the shakespeare of our time,” said rabb.

“he is famous for hosting shakespeare reading sessions for his actors and, like shakespeare, whedon uses the same actors for multiple roles. he even directed a film version of shakespeare's much ado about nothing, again using performers from his various television shows and movies.”

“the bard, of course, wrote before the influence of the modern moral philosophers, while whedon is writing in the postmodern period,” said richardson. “in this book, we argue that whedon’s work is more in harmony with the early modern values of shakespeare than with principle and rule-based modern ethics, which trace their origin to the rationalism of 17th and 18th century moral philosophy.”

the book, published by mcfarland, includes a detailed discussion of representative works of shakespeare and whedon, showing how some of whedon's most celebrated characters, such as buffy and angel, have origins in shakespearean drama.

the authors will give a talk drawing from the book, followed by refreshments. all are welcome to attend this free book launch.
