as part of this year's international festival of authors lit on tour stop in thunder bay, the department of english is very pleased to host a master class by michael winter on friday, nov. 7 at 10 am in braun building 2006. admission is free and all are welcome.
michael winter has been nominated for and received numerous awards for his short stories and novels, many of which are set on the island of newfoundland, on which he grew up. his 2007 novel, the architects are here, was shortlisted for the giller prize, and his 2010 documentary fiction, the death of donna whalen, was shortlisted for the writers' trust fiction prize.
his latest book, into the blizzard: walking the fields of the newfoundland dead, follows winter as he traces the steps of the newfoundland soldiers who fought and died at beaumont-hamel during the battle of the somme in 1916, when the newfoundland regiment was decimated.

the department of english is holding a book sale on wednesday, april 2nd, from 9:00-3:00 in the agora of the university centre.
books will range from $1.00-$3.00 and include a wide variety of like-new or very gently used books -- literature, history, popular fiction, cookbooks, children's, etc.
