tuesday, sept. 24 -

the skeletal remains of a senior officer of sir john franklin's 1845 northwest passage expedition have been identified by researchers from the university of waterloo and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 using dna and genealogical analyses.

in april of 1848 james fitzjames of hms erebus helped lead 105 survivors from their ice-trapped ships in an attempt to escape the arctic. none would survive. since the mid-19th century, remains of dozens of them have been found around king william island, nunavut.

the identification was made possible by a dna sample from a living descendant, which matched the dna that was discovered at the archaeological site on king william island  where 451 bones from at least 13 franklin sailors were found.

“we worked with a good quality sample that allowed us to generate a y-chromosome profile, and we were lucky enough to obtain a match,” said stephen fratpietro of lakehead’s paleo-dna lab.

fitzjames is just the second of those 105 to be positively identified, joining john gregory, engineer aboard hms erebus, whom the team identified in 2021.

“the identification of fitzjames’ remains provides new insights about the expedition's sad ending,” said dr. douglas stenton, adjunct professor of anthropology at waterloo.

in the 1850s inuit told searchers they had seen evidence that survivors had resorted to cannibalism, shocking some europeans. those accounts were fully corroborated in 1997 by the late dr. anne keenleyside who found cut marks on nearly one-quarter of the human bones at nglj-2, proving that the bodies of at least four of the men who died there had been subject to cannibalism.

fitzjames’ mandible is one of the bones exhibiting multiple cut marks, demonstrating that after his death his body was subject to cannibalism. “this shows that he predeceased at least some of the other sailors who perished, and that neither rank nor status was the governing principle in the final desperate days of the expedition as they strove to save themselves,” said stenton.

19th century europeans believed that all cannibalism was morally reprehensible, but the researchers emphasize that we now understand much more about what is known as survival or starvation cannibalism and can empathize with those forced to resort to it. “it demonstrates the level of desperation that the franklin sailors must have felt to do something they would have considered abhorrent,” said dr. robert park, waterloo anthropology professor. “ever since the expedition disappeared into the arctic 179 years ago there has been widespread interest in its ultimate fate, generating many speculative books and articles and, most recently, a popular television miniseries which turned it into a horror story with cannibalism as one of its themes. meticulous archaeological research like this shows that the true story is just as interesting, and that there is still more to learn,” said park.

the remains of fitzjames and the other sailors who perished with him now rest in a memorial cairn at the site with a commemorative plaque.

descendants of members of the franklin expedition are encouraged to contact stenton. “we are extremely grateful to this family for sharing their history with us and for providing dna samples, and welcome opportunities to work with other descendants of members of the franklin expedition to see if their dna can be used to identify other individuals.”

“identification of a senior officer from sir john franklin's northwest passage expedition” by stenton, fratpietro and park was published in the “journal of archaeological science: reports.” the research was funded by the government of nunavut and the university of waterloo.

who’s afraid of childless cat ladies? an award-winning lakehead researcher has some answers.

erika puiras with a cat

“the women’s health scholars award makes it easier to focus on my work because it affords financial stability,” erika says. recently, the award funding allowed her to present her research at the 33rd international congress of psychology in prague. “to see my research gaining traction at that level is wonderful!” when she’s at home, erika enjoys spending time with her beautiful cat severus. (photo courtesy of erika puiras)

lazy. selfish. immature. abnormal. those are some of the insults lobbed at women who choose not to have children.

erika puiras was only 24 years old when she became the target of these prejudices.

“some of the people in my life began making snide comments and pressuring me to have kids,” she says. this was in 2021 after erika had completed undergraduate and master’s degrees in psychology at lakehead and was about to begin her phd studies in clinical psychology.

“i got fed up with the stigma and decided to do something about it by using my phd dissertation to study the biases experienced by childfree women and the impact they have on women’s mental health,” erika says. “i have great respect for parents, but that doesn’t mean that other life choices aren’t equally valid.”

she wasn’t sure what kind of reaction her research would garner because this form of stigmatization wasn’t really on the public’s radar at that time, either culturally or academically. “it was a leap into the unknown—i was concerned that i wouldn’t be able to recruit enough participants for my research study,” erika says.

her topic choice, though, proved to be prophetic—erika has tapped into a divisive moment in a changing society. online or offline, it’s hard to turn around without witnessing heated debates about “childless cat ladies.” this discourse, for many, is received as an assault on women’s autonomy.

2024 women’s health scholars award for groundbreaking research

ontario’s ministry of health and long-term care recognized erika’s research in 2023 with a prestigious women’s health scholars award. now, lakehead is proud to announce that erika’s women’s health scholars award has been renewed for 2024. the purpose of the award is to help ontario attract and retain exceptional scholars who will make the province a leader in effective health services and health care for women.

“only a handful of these awards are granted each year, with fierce competition from across the province and from much larger universities,” says lakehead’s faculty of health and behavioural sciences dean dr. mirella stroink. “it’s a reflection of erika’s outstanding research track record and the support of lakehead’s doctoral program that she has received a women’s health scholars award.”

“women’s decisions to have or not have a family have real consequences in terms of social judgment,” dr. stroink adds, “and recent political rhetoric has been demonizing women who don’t have children.”

punished and dismissed for not being mothers

erika is now analyzing research data gathered from studies she conducted that surveyed over 1,300 participants from across canada and the united states, as well as from thunder bay. she describes the findings that are emerging as disturbing.

“women are being subjected to physical and verbal abuse from family members—and people outside their family—because they are childfree,” erika says. many study respondents also faced both workplace discrimination and stigmatization by their health-care providers “women frequently mention being denied medical care—doctors refusing to give them iuds and other forms of birth control they’ve requested or refusing to sterilize them without their partners’ consent, which often lowers their trust in health care providers.”

there was a common message that erika heard again and again from the study participants. “they wanted people to know that their worth as women—and as human beings—shouldn’t be defined by whether or not they have children.”

lakehead bridging truth and reconciliation through art

september 6, 2024 - thunder bay, ont.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 unveiled an every child matters outdoor art installation during a ceremony to honour the children lost to the residential school system, survivors and their families. the artwork unveiling was accompanied by the raising of the national centre for truth and reconciliation (nctr) survivors’ flag.

located in the agora circle, at the heart of lakehead’s thunder bay campus, the art installation features seven white eagle feathers on an orange background, embodying the seven sacred teachings – spiritual principles central to many indigenous cultures across north america: wisdom, love, respect, bravery, honesty, humility, and truth. together, these teachings offer guidance on how to live and act in harmony with one another for communities to thrive.

“anyone who visits our campus will see this artwork as a powerful symbol of our collective journey toward understanding and reconciliation,” said dr. gillian siddall, president and vice-chancellor. “it not only commemorates survivors and those who tragically lost their lives, but it also serves as a daily reminder of our responsibility to foster an inclusive and respectful community. it marks a central space on campus for reflection, dialogue and connection. and, it stands as a strong symbol of belonging for the many indigenous 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , faculty and staff who are an integral part of the lakehead community.”

the installation is part of a broader initiative by the university to integrate indigenous culture and history into the fabric of 2022卡塔尔世界杯赛程表时间 , ensuring that the lessons of the past are not forgotten as we build a more inclusive and just future.

throughout september, lakehead visual arts student and artist tashie broadbent will lead a powerful community-based art project that invites participants to actively contribute to painting a vision of reconciliation. this unique project kicks off on monday, sept. 9, with a circle gathering to aid meaningful conversations about the true essence of reconciliation and commitment to action. following these discussions, tashie will outline a mural that embodies these collective aspirations. on wednesday, sept. 16, the entire community is invited to pick up a paintbrush and help bring this shared vision to life. the final piece will be unveiled on thursday, sept. 26.

“art has the power to create a safe space where the truths of our past can be seen, heard and felt,” explained denise baxter, vice-provost indigenous initiatives. “through this shared creative process we can weave together the threads of reconciliation, understanding and healing in collaboration with communities and nations on pathways forward. we invite all members of the lakehead and thunder bay communities to participate.”

additionally, lakehead will host several free learning opportunities on truth and reconciliation leading up to the national day for truth and reconciliation on september 30.
