first member of ill-fated 1845 franklin expedition is identified by dna analysis

may 6, 2021 – thunder bay, ont.

the identity of the skeletal remains of a member of the 1845 franklin expedition has been confirmed using dna and genealogical analyses by a team of researchers from the university of waterloo, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and trent university. this is the first member of the ill-fated expedition to be positively identified through dna.

dna extracted from tooth and bone samples recovered in 2013 were confirmed to be the remains of warrant officer john gregory, engineer aboard hms erebus. the results matched a dna sample obtained from a direct descendant of gregory.

the remains of the officer were found on king william island, nunavut. “we now know that john gregory was one of three expedition personnel who died at this particular site, located at erebus bay on the southwest shore of king william island,” says douglas stenton, adjunct professor of anthropology at waterloo and co-author of a new paper about the discovery.

“having john gregory's remains being the first to be identified via genetic analysis is an incredible day for our family, as well as all those interested in the ill-fated franklin expedition,” said gregory’s great-great-great grandson jonathan gregory of port elizabeth, south africa.

“the whole gregory family is extremely grateful to the entire research team for their dedication and hard work, which is so critical in unlocking pieces of history that have been frozen in time for so long.”

sir john franklin’s 1845 northwest passage expedition, with 129 sailors on two ships, erebus and terror, entered the arctic in 1845. in april 1848, 105 survivors abandoned their ice-trapped ships in a desperate escape attempt. none would survive. since the mid-19th century, skeletal remains of dozens of crew members have been found on king william island, but none had been positively identified.

to date, the dna of 26 other members of the franklin expedition have been extracted from remains found in nine archaeological sites situated along the line of the 1848 retreat. “analysis of these remains has also yielded other important information on these individuals, including their estimated age at death, stature, and health,” says anne keenleyside, trent anthropology professor and co-author of the paper.

“we are extremely grateful to the gregory family for sharing their family history with us and for providing dna samples in support of our research.  we’d like to encourage other descendants of members of the franklin expedition to contact our team to see if their dna can be used to identify the other 26 individuals,” says stenton.

genealogical records indicated a direct, five-generation paternal relationship between the living descendant and john gregory.

“it was fortunate that the samples collected contained well-preserved genetic material,” says stephen fratpietro of lakehead’s paleo-dna lab, who is a co-author.

prior to this dna match, the last information about his voyage known to gregory’s family was in a letter he wrote to his wife hannah from greenland on 9 july 1845 before the ships entered the canadian arctic.

this latest discovery helps to complete the story of the franklin victims, says robert park, waterloo anthropology professor and co-author. “the identification proves that gregory survived three years locked in the ice on board hms erebus. but he perished 75 kilometers south at erebus bay.”

the remains of gregory and two others were first discovered in 1859 and buried in 1879. the grave was rediscovered in 1993, and in 1997 several bones that had been exposed through disturbance of the grave were placed in a cairn with a commemorative plaque. the grave was then excavated in 2013 and after being analyzed, all the remains were returned to the site in 2014 and placed in a new larger memorial cairn.

dna identification of a sailor from the 1845 franklin northwest passage expedition by stenton, park, fratpietro, and keenleyside was published in the journal polar record. the research was funded by the government of nunavut, trent university and the university of waterloo. descendants of members of the franklin expedition can contact douglas stenton or anne keenleyside.

honours bachelor of commerce 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 isabelle michels, francesco sacchetti, vishwa shah and sasha wilson competed as team #8 at the annual competition hosted by algoma university.

the team’s winning presentation was about reducing the effects of contract cheating as teaching transitioned online during covid-19. they proposed to introduce more support for professors and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 because it is an equal effort from both parties. the team took inspiration from some of the faculty of business administration’s practices during covid-19, such as extensive use of d2l.

the judges were impressed with the team’s concepts. “the judges were very pleased with our presentation and delivery and overall group dynamic,” explains shah.

“they thought our solutions were realistic and well presented, and could be implemented in real life. they liked our financial analysis and the way we incorporated an analogy in our presentations. they thought we would do very well in bigger case competitions.”

case coordinators dr. asad aman and dr. kathy sanderson are also pleased with the results of the 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ’ hard work and the benefits of participating in the competition.

“the event gives the business 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 from northern ontario universities an invaluable opportunity to interact with the leading practitioners,” dr. aman says. “in addition to gaining industry exposure, it also helps them develop networks.”

he adds that the diversity of the team was one of their greatest strengths, “we had a mix of domestic and international 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , majoring in different areas of business.”

dr. sanderson emphasizes the amount of effort involved in the competition, but also the value added for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

“case competitions are very challenging,” she said. “they test assessment skills, critical thinking, implementation plans, and teamwork.

“this year the competitions have been virtual, adding complexity to the competition. the win by the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 team not only showcases their business knowledge and the strengths of their ideas, but their ability to perform virtually as a team.”

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers helping newcomer women overcome economic shock caused by covid-19

april 7, 2021 – thunder bay, ont.

a team of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers is interviewing and surveying newcomer women in northwestern ontario to determine how they can overcome the economic shock caused by covid-19.

dr. kathy sanderson, assistant professor in the faculty of business administration, and her team, including dr. claudio pousa, associate professor in the faculty of business administration, and master’s 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 /graduates, are receiving $193,014 from the future skills centre.

the research team will survey 400 women – half of whom will be newcomers. these women will reside in northwestern ontario, from wawa to the manitoba border, and the team will interview and survey them over the next two years.

at the end of march, dr. sanderson wrapped up a project funded by the ministry of labour’s ontario human capital research and innovation fund called employing new immigrants: community and organizational welcoming in northwestern ontario.

dr. sanderson said she is excited to continue researching the experiences of newcomers on this new project, called resilience of newcomer women in northwestern ontario: overcoming covid-19 economic shock, which will begin in early april.

photo of dr. kathy sanderson

“newcomers are a vital part of our labour pool and many are underemployed,” dr. sanderson said.

“this project will allow us to determine new strategies for increasing the participation of new immigrant women in northwestern ontario.”

newcomer women were already severely disadvantaged regarding employment, and covid-19 has exacerbated this situation, she said.  many newcomer women work in health care, personal care services, and retail: areas of high demand during the pandemic.  this comparative, longitudinal study in northwestern ontario will allow the research team to reconceptualize how employment supports are delivered.

dr. sanderson and her team are doing this project as part of lakehead’s centre for innovation and entrepreneurship research (cier).

“at cier, we recognize that immigration is crucial to the viability of our region, and covid-19 has exacerbated the challenges that newcomer women are experiencing when seeking participation in the regional labour market,” said dr. michael s. dohan, director, cier, at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“we congratulate dr. sanderson on her recent grant to assist her and her team in conducting this important community-based research,” dr. dohan added.

this research partnership aims to build knowledge and provide recommendations for skills innovation, recovery, and new ways forward for newcomer women in the face of economic shock from the covid-19 pandemic.

pedro barata, executive director of the future skills centre (fsc), said creating a research partnership that benefits newcomer women in northwestern ontario is a perfect example of programs fsc is investing in to build an inclusive workforce of the future that leaves no-one behind.

“newcomer women will benefit from this partnership, which aims to build knowledge and provide recommendations for skills innovation, recovery, and new ways forward for this population that was hit hard by the pandemic,” barata said.

“this project will identify opportunities and barriers they face and examine how employment support is delivered. this is just one of the exciting shock-proofing projects that fsc is investing in to build a future playbook for shared prosperity, and help canadian workers and businesses seize opportunities in our future economy.”

led by 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 in thunder bay – in partnership with immigration and economic experts – this project will examine both the rural and urban effects of covid-19 on newcomer women. the research team will produce meaningful results that can be applied across the country, including identifying opportunities and barriers to full labour participation by newcomer women in the wake of covid-19.

“阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 appreciates the support from the future skills centre for this research project,” said dr. andrew p. dean, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s vice-president, research and innovation.

“the outcomes that are anticipated from this study should positively contribute to strategies for better inclusivity of new immigrants to northwestern ontario."

the project will make recommendations related to increasing labour participation that will be shared with newcomers, decision makers and through traditional academic outlets.

the project, ‘resilience of newcomer women in northwestern ontario: overcoming covid-19 economic shock’, is funded by the government of canada’s future skills centre.

bora laskin faculty of law dean jula hughes said she is excited to oversee the project with guidance from the anishinawbe omaa minowaywin, the law school’s indigenous advisory council. she is pleased to announce professor nancy sandy as director of the indigenous law and justice institute.

“the indigenous law and justice institute is an expression of the commitment of the bora laskin faculty of law to be a partner in the revitalization of indigenous laws,” dean hughes said.

“we are so grateful to the indigenous communities and organizations who are working with us.  we want to also thank the federal department of justice for making the institute possible,” she said.

robin sutherland, the bora laskin faculty of law’s director of indigenous relations, said this is an exceptional opportunity for the faculty to engage even more with indigenous communities and organizations, to revitalize laws, develop curriculum and broaden research.

“it is also a recognition of our unique position in the legal education landscape as a northern law school committed to indigenous peoples, lands and interests, and we thank the department of justice, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and the indigenous partners that continue to support us,” he said.

this funding allows 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 to meet call to action #50 in the truth and reconciliation report, collaborating with the federal government to establish an indigenous law institute for the development, use, and understanding of indigenous laws and access to justice in accordance with the unique cultures of aboriginal peoples in canada.

the first pillar of the institute’s work will be building and sustaining relationships. it will work with current and future indigenous partner communities and organizations to build capacity within the indigenous law and justice institute as well as in indigenous communities towards the revitalization of anishinaabe and métis law.

land-based learning forms the second pillar of the institute’s work. the institute will lead curriculum development and delivery of a law camp that will engage faculty and community in indigenous land law.

this camp will include indigenous law revitalization, restatement and codification methodologies, awareness of indigenous political and service organizations and cultural competencies for effective and ethical lawyering on behalf of indigenous people, communities and organizations.

the third pillar of the institute will foster a lively research environment for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , community-based researchers and faculty in the area of indigenous law. the institute will build on the bora laskin faculty of law’s existing indigenous law conference to bring together community leaders and members, knowledge keepers, scholars and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

the institute will train 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to conduct interviews with elders and knowledge keepers. by developing and applying grounded methodologies, the institute will investigate treaty history and practice, conduct community-based workshops, and document anishinaabe and métis law, legal principles and processes in culturally-appropriate and community-accessible ways.

the bora laskin faculty of law is committed to making a difference by providing access to justice, and leading the way for northern communities.

by offering legal education with a triple mandate in aboriginal and indigenous law, natural resources and environmental law, and sole/small town practice with the integrated practice curriculum (ipc), its curriculum provides 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 with a legal education that will prepare them to practice law in northern ontario and canada while understanding the issues pertinent to the land and peoples of this region.

a big thank you (miigwech) to the existing indigenous partner communities and organizations, without whose support this project would not be possible: anishinabek nation, fort william first nation, grand council treaty #3, the métis nation of ontario, the nishnawbe aski nation and the chiefs of ontario.
