a world-renowned climate change expert will speak at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 on monday, march 9 during the 10^th annual research and innovation week.

dr. john fyfe, a senior research scientist with the canadian centre for climate modelling and analysis, will discuss the slowdown in the rate of temperature increase that started a decade ago. 

“dr. fyfe has made significant contributions to the latest report of the intergovernmental panel on climate change, particularly in documenting and understanding these warming hiatuses,” said dr. todd randall, dean, faculty of science and environmental studies at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“global climate change and our ability to respond to it are hot topics for climate scientists, policy makers and the general public,” dr. randall said.  

dr. fyfe’s talk will be at 7:30 pm in atac 1003. the talk is part of the faculty of science and environmental studies speakers series and co-hosted by the office of research services. parking and admission are free.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s centre of excellence for sustainable mining and exploration (cesme), established in 2013, is releasing its first report, from a conference held on the role of government policy in sustainable mining that took place in december 2013. 

the report provides some key conclusions from the conference discussions, among them:

• regional sustainable development frameworks that facilitate aboriginal peoples’ participation in decision making are sorely needed
• infrastructure planning and development should involve provincial, federal and first nation governments
• with mining being the highest paying industrial sector and with workforce gaps predicted in the next decade, the opportunity is ripe to develop a larger aboriginal workforce 

“the purpose of the conference was to examine the past, present and future of public policy and how it promotes sustainable mining development, with a focus on policy development for the ring of fire and other major exploration projects in northwestern ontario,” said dr. peggy smith, a cesme researcher and associate professor in the faculty of natural resources management.

the report chronicles key points made by a diverse array of speakers and participants who engaged in discussions around major themes, including decision making, infrastructure, aboriginal and community engagement, environmental protection, workforce development, taxation and benefit sharing, and business development.

“cesme is excited to release this report, and we hope that it will continue to stimulate discussion as to how best develop the incredible resources of northern ontario in a way that can benefit everyone,” said dr. peter hollings, cesme’s director and chair of lakehead’s department of geology.

speakers at cesme’s 2013 role of government policy in sustainable mining conference ranged from industry representatives like stephen lindley of snc-lavalin who discussed best practices; first nations, such as webequie and the metis nation of ontario, that are engaging in the mining sector; non-governmental representatives concerned about environmental protection; legal expert bill gallagher, who spoke about the influence of aboriginal rights cases on resource development; and matawa first nations negotiator bob rae. 

“none of this would have been possible without the hard work of our conference participants and the support of our generous sponsors,” added dr. hollings, who presented cesme’s report at the prospectors and developers association of canada’s annual conference in toronto, this morning.

a launch will be held for joss whedon as shakespearean moralist: narrative ethics of the bard and the buffyverse, the new book by douglas rabb, a professor emeritus in philosophy, and michael richardson, a professor in the department of english.

“joss whedon as shakespearean moralist contends, somewhat whimsically, that whedon is the shakespeare of our time,” said rabb.

“he is famous for hosting shakespeare reading sessions for his actors and, like shakespeare, whedon uses the same actors for multiple roles. he even directed a film version of shakespeare's much ado about nothing, again using performers from his various television shows and movies.”

“the bard, of course, wrote before the influence of the modern moral philosophers, while whedon is writing in the postmodern period,” said richardson. “in this book, we argue that whedon’s work is more in harmony with the early modern values of shakespeare than with principle and rule-based modern ethics, which trace their origin to the rationalism of 17th and 18th century moral philosophy.”

the book, published by mcfarland, includes a detailed discussion of representative works of shakespeare and whedon, showing how some of whedon's most celebrated characters, such as buffy and angel, have origins in shakespearean drama.

the authors will give a talk drawing from the book, followed by refreshments. all are welcome to attend this free book launch.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 is one of 21 ontario universities participating in a virtual scavenger hunt that will take the public on an intriguing journey through the world of research, the council of ontario universities (cou) announced recently.

“ontario's universities constantly produce useful and fascinating research that we generally only hear about when a major breakthrough is made,” said erica sawula, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s research matters student ambassador.

“by participating in the virtual scavenger hunt, you can have fun while learning about how ontario university research is changing lives every day,” sawula said.

open to 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and the general public, the contest begins monday, feb. 17 and runs for the last two weeks of the month. contestants can solve new clues every day to enter for prizes.

intrepid scavengers who get all 21 clues correct unlock a secret message that they can then submit to be entered for 21 grand prizes.

世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 from each of the participating universities will deliver daily video clues via email to registered contestants whose answers can be hunted down online. clues will also be available on the research matters website at yourontarioresearch.ca.

research matters will give away prizes to clue solvers every day, as well as 21 grand prizes of a research matters gift bag with clothes, puzzle books and more.

in addition, university 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will be eligible for five cash prizes of $500 each and five ontario classes, from kindergarten to grade 12, that complete the hunt will be eligible to win a pizza lunch with a researcher.

the contest ends on friday, feb. 27. in order to be entered for the grand prize draws, you must register and answer all the clues into an online grid. if you complete it correctly, a hidden message will emerge, reading down through the answers.

submit the grid in order to be entered for the grand prizes; winners will be chosen at random from correct entries. the deadline for submitting your completed grid is monday, march 2 at 11:59 pm, and winners will be announced at the research matters big thinking panel in toronto on wednesday, april 1.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has been granted permanent status for its teaching english as a second language (tesl) certificate program.

graduates of the program will now automatically qualify for a tesl canada professional one certificate. previously, graduates needed to apply to tesl canada for their certificate, and tesl canada decided if they qualified.

“when we began offering this program two years ago it was on a year-to-year basis with interim status,” said dr. don kerr, chair of the department of professional development in education.

“gaining permanent status with tesl canada is recognition of the high standard of the program. a tesl certificate is a terrific opportunity for teachers to increase their skills and employability, and for others to embark on a tesl career," dr. kerr said.

“this is another way we are helping people use their skills to find employment in canada and abroad,” said dr. john o’meara, dean of the faculty of education. 

lakehead’s tesl certificate program offers accreditation to individuals who want to teach english as a second language in canada or abroad. 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 are in class for 100 hours and have 20 hours of practicum.  

the tesl program has had 14 graduates and there are currently an additional 12 people studying teaching english as a second language.

experts from lakehead will give free presentations about indigenous children and adoption, and the development of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 during its first 50 years.

“this partnership between the library and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 helps make these informative topics accessible to the whole community,” said ruth hamlin-douglas, acting head of adult services at the thunder bay public library.

lakehead president and vice-chancellor dr. brian stevenson said this is an excellent opportunity for the community to learn more about interesting topics presented by members of the university faculty.

the formal adoption of indigenous children by white families, which came to be known as the “sixties scoop,” is an emotional issue that has given rise to a class action suit in ontario challenging the legality of adoptions between 1965 and 1984. in this talk, professor lori chambers will review recent history and shed light on some of the main issues surrounding indigenous children and adoption.

this month begins a year of events that will celebrate 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s 50^th anniversary.

celebrations held at both the thunder bay and orillia campuses will begin next week with invitations extended to everyone in the community.

“over the past 50 years, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has built a reputation for being both exceptional and unconventional,” said dr. brian stevenson, lakehead president and vice-chancellor. “i invite everyone to join us at our anniversary events to celebrate everything we have accomplished together.”

to commemorate the anniversary, the city of thunder bay will raise lakehead’s 50^th anniversary flag at city hall on monday, jan. 12 at 10:00 am.

on friday, jan. 16, community members are invited to join dr. stevenson to launch the 50^th anniversary celebrations with an afternoon of skating on lake tamblyn, a free bbq, bonfire and fireworks from 2:30 pm until 7 pm. this event includes free parking.

the first 100 guests at the friday, jan. 16 launch will receive free tickets to watch the lakehead thunderwolves men’s hockey team play the université du québec à trois-rivières patriotes at 7:30 pm that night. bus transportation to and from campus will be available.
