renowned for his public presentations demystifying science, topics he addresses vary from nutritional controversies, to the chemistry of love, and questions such as whether men are genetically programmed to run the remote control. he hosts a weekly radio show in montreal, is a regular contributor to quirks and quarks, the discovery channel, and other networks, and writes a weekly newspaper column. he has authored several best-selling books, including brain fuel, an apple a day and radar, hula hoops and playful pigs.

(march 5, 2009 --thunder bay, on) 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 's centre for northern studies and the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 research chair in northern studies will commemorate the international polar year and "darwin year" celebrations, with a two-day national symposium and forum on 6-7 march 2009.

the symposium will consist of three parts:

1. six canadian scientific superstars will explore the consequences of climate change on canada's biota in a plenary session. each one will be challenged not only to document the effects of climate change, but to provide solutions.

2. speakers will identify and network with tomorrow's star researchers by inviting a top graduate student or post-doctoral fellow to accompany them. these young scholars will be challenged to collaborate and begin building effective research programs for the future. an open forum will take place with a productive dialogue with six of canada's most acclaimed ecologists and evolutionary scientists.

3. 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 faculty and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , as well as individuals external to the university, will contribute posters on northern research.

(march 3, 2009 --thunder bay, on) canada is a metis nation, says john ralston saul in his new book a fair country: telling truths about canada. co-sponsored by the office of aboriginal initiatives at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and negahneewin college (confederation college) saul visits 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 on friday, march 6 at 7:00 p.m. to share and explore the ideas of his book. a fair country was one of the top non-fiction bestsellers of 2008.

according to saul, peace, fairness, and good government lie at the heart of canada's story. saul argues that peacekeeping, multiculturalism, and other distinctly canadian attributes have an aboriginal inspiration and that embracing these facts will bring canada into a time of transformation - canadians will discover a remarkable power to act. this mindset will be a powerful force if used by decision-makers in contemporary problem-solving.

"it's crucial that all canadians cultivate an understanding of our aboriginal heritage, and the role aboriginal people played in the development of canada," says beverly sabourin, vice provost (aboriginal initiatives) at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . (march 3, 2009 --thunder bay, on) on wednesday, march 4, through thursday, march 5, the northern ontario sustainable communities partnership (noscp) will hold a workshop at the prince arthur hotel, with those affected or influenced by the forest sector situation. the northern ontario sustainable communities partnership is an inclusive group coming together in response to the forest industry crisis in northern ontario. participants include northern municipalities, non-governmental organizations, academics, and aboriginal organizations.

according to noscp, the current crisis in the industry is an opportunity to re-evaluate the structure of the current forest sector in ontario, and to focus on solutions to achieve long-term sustainability for forest ecosystems and communities in northern ontario.

dr. peggy smith, associate professor in the faculty of forestry and the forest environment at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and one of the event organizers, says, "the restructuring of forestry in northern ontario presents us with an opportunity. we want to respond to this downturn by coming up with new ways of approaching forest management, and developing a new vision of forestry that not only includes enhanced participation by community members, but also puts a premium on community sustainability."

the workshop seeks to educate participants about how the forest tenure system affects sustainability; engage in dialogue about how to create an improved community-based forest development paradigm; and develop a vision for an improved tenure system in ontario that leads to increased community and ecosystem sustainability, building on the principles of noscp's community forest charter. the program consists of a combination of presentations, panels with question-and-answer, and interactive sessions to discuss how to implement noscp's community forest charter. community forestry scholars and practitioners from other jurisdictions have been invited to provide expertise about the community forest approach.

(february 24, 2009 --thunder bay, on) tomorrow evening, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , faculty, staff, and community members gather in 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 's uc0050 (near the agora) to hear dr. kevin danaher, executive director of the global citizen center, speak at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 's 2009 speaker series. the speaker series is hosted in conjunction with the university's 2009 research and innovation week.

dr. danaher is the author and/or editor of numerous books, including his latest (co-authored with shannon biggs and jason mark), building the green economy: success stories from the grass roots.

according to danaher, a paradigm shift is taking place within our social and economic structures, and the green economy is growing at a rapid rate, challenging the present - unsustainable - economy.

"the green economy is no longer some quaint sideline," says danaher. it is the most rapidly growing sector of the economy. sales of organic foods are skyrocketing; renewable energy is the hot frontier of venture capital; the green building technology is transforming the construction industry."

evidence of this paradigm shift is seen in growing consumer demand for nature-friendly products, and investments in renewable energy and clean-tech sectors; we are also seeing more corporate leaders acknowledging social/environmental responsibility as a competitive advantage, explains danaher.

"no one knows exactly what the green economy will look like, but that's part of the beauty of the process. it's an organic, evolving entity. the green economy must be a democratic economy. it must create the kinds of economic structures that give everyone a voice in the production and distribution of key resources," he says.

"阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has a commitment to raise awareness about environmental issues, and sustainability," says 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 president dr. fred gilbert. "in dr. danaher we have the opportunity to hear ideas from a leading thinker in these fields, and to share his ideas with the others."

about dr. danaher
kevin danaher, born march 7, 1950, is an anti-globalization activist, and the author of numerous books, including building the green economy: success stories from the grassroots, and insurrection: citizen challenges to corporate power. with kirsten irgens-moller and medea benjamin, he is co-founder of global exchange, an anti-globalization non-governmental organization based in san francisco, california. he is the founder and executive co-producer of the green festivals (greenfestivals.org). he is also the executive director of the global citizen center (globalcitizencenter.org), which is developing a 120,000 square foot non-profit building that brings together green retail, a restaurant, offices of non-profit social justice and environmental organizations, event spaces, and affordable housing for teachers and first responders, in a downtown location in san francisco. this building is being developed as a prototype that can be replicated in other cities around the world to unite the green economy movement.

kevin danaher received his ph.d. in sociology from the university of california, santa cruz. he is also known for his lectures at various universities, and to community organizations.

(february 24, 2009 --thunder bay, on) 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will be showing off their research talent this week, as they take part in the graduate student conference that is part of research and innovation week 2009.

the conference will feature poster and paper presentations. the top three presentations in each of three categories will be recognised. the categories are the natural science and engineering research council of canada (nserc), the social sciences and humanities research council of canada (sshrc), and the canadian institute of health research (cihr). one prize will be awarded to the best aboriginal-themed research project.

(february 19, 2009 --thunder bay, on) as part of research and innovation week 2009, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 is hosting a film festival that's open to the public. three films will be shown: the premiere of canada research chair dr. judy iseke-barnes' film a living history of metis families, as told by dorothy chartrand, the lost tomb of jesus, and bloodline.

in a living history, metis grandmother dorothy chartrand tells the story of her metis families, and the political and social change that impacted metis lives in the 1800s until today, tracking some of dorothy's 25 years of research in archives and hbc and church records that lead to understanding the history of her family, and the community of st. albert, alberta.

filmmaker judy iseke-barnes says, "this film is one piece of the puzzle in the history of women, specifically metis women, in this country. we don't often hear stories of how these women worked to create and sustain the community structures that were the basis of this country."

according to iseke-barnes, the historical record is male dominated, and focussed on written records, as opposed to oral ones. "there is a bias embedded in the recording of history which gives more legitimacy to written records. those often focus on men and men's work. oral history, by way of contrast, is a valid and under-valued window into the history of women, and the history of this nation."

iseke-barnes has two more films in production, and a third one in the planning stages. the first is tentatively entitled, leadership as service: lives and roles of metis grandmothers, and may be released as early as april 2009. the second is an animated collection of metis/cree stories from tom mccallam, (white standing buffalo), and has a tentative release date of the fall of 2009. the films will be sent to film festivals, the aboriginal people's television network (aptn), and the smithsonian institute, which has requested copies of them. ultimately, the films will be available on dvd. more information is available at the accompanying website www.ourelderstories.com.
