title: "(like) putting a condom over blood cells": the pharmaceuticalization of hiv public health prevention
synopsis
this talk brings a critical sociology perspective to the clinical practice of prescribing hiv pre-exposure prophylaxis (prep) to patients who are at high risk of viral infection.
using the case of a health clinic that serves underprivileged inner-city youth, we analyze the strategies that clinic personnel use to promote and prescribe prep as well as the strategies they use to distribute the drug and monitor medication adherence.
we critically examine questions about provider practices, access to medication, constructions of risk, and the "pharmaceuticalization" of hiv prevention.
