dr. aris carastathis
aris carastathis received his early musical training at the attica conservatory in athens, greece and completed his bachelor (guitar) and master (composition) degrees in music at the university of northern iowa. he graduated with a doctor of musical arts degree from louisiana state university in 1988, where he studied composition with dinos constantinides. he is an associate composer and voting member of the canadian music centre, and an elected member of the greek composers union. he was a founding member of the board of directors of new music north.
carastathis has composed more than one hundred works for a wide variety of media. his compositions have been performed in austria, belgium, canada, england, germany, greece, italy, kazakhstan, poland, serbia, and the u.s. and broadcast on cbc (radio two and radio one) as well as iowa and louisiana public radio. most of his works have been published by the canadian music centre, conners publications, natchitoches, la, phorminx editions, thunder bay, and acoma/nambe editions, toronto. he has received commissions from a variety of performers and organizations including the canadian music centre, norman burges memorial fund, acadia trio, the louisiana composers' guild, the baton rouge symphony chamber orchestra, the thunder bay symphony orchestra and chorus, music canada 2000, and louisiana sinfonietta.
