on saturday, feb. 2, dr. michel beaulieu from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s history department will explore how historical amnesia has contributed to the rise of fake news, at the mary jl black library at 2 pm.

fake news can mean many things: deliberate misinformation, hoaxes, propaganda, casting doubt on legitimate news for political gain – to name a few. yet, despite its predominance today, it is not a new phenomenon.

then on saturday, march 2 at 2 pm, join lakehead english professors dr. judith leggatt and dr. monica flegel in the brodie library’s fireside reading room for a discussion called: is superman an immigrant?: race, ethnicity and the superhero.

the superhero comic has, since its inception in the 1930s, given life to fantasies of strength, power, and courage. while well-known superheroes such as batman, wonder woman, iron man, and superman are all white, the genre has also lent itself to explorations of race and ethnicity in relation to nation-building, citizenship, and crime-fighting.

in a discussion of the ethnic and racial backgrounds of superhero comic creators, and the development of characters such as t’challa (black panther), kamala khan (ms. marvel), and miles morales (ultimate spider-man), this presentation will discuss the role that superhero comics play in supporting and challenging ethnic and racial stereotypes.

in conversation talks are free of charge and everyone is welcome to attend.

on saturday, sept. 29 at 2 pm at the mary j.l. black library community program room, join dr. pauline sameshima, lakehead’s canada research chair in arts integrated studies, for this exciting talk. using research projects as examples, this talk looks at how creative making develops understanding and a better world. when we imagine, make, and gift, we construct a future and a past of love.

going from chicago to duluth of the north: thunder bay’s economy in the past, present, and future

on saturday, oct. 20 at 2 pm in the brodie resource library fireside reading room, join dr. livio di matteo of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s economics department for an exciting journey that explores the foundations of thunder bay’s economy, its current performance and anticipated challenges for the future.

legal history and the search for entrenched protections for canada’s rule of law

on saturday, nov. 24 at 2 pm in the brodie resource library fireside reading room, join dr. ryan alford, from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s bora laskin faculty of law, for this exciting talk.
it was recently revealed that canada participated in the targeted killing of canadian citizens in syria during the military mission that ended in 2015. leading legal scholars have argued that the only applicable source of rights is the canadian charter of rights and freedoms. dr. alford will argue that the preamble of the british north america act embedded seven absolute rights into the constitution of canada at confederation.

local food initiatives in northwestern ontario are ensuring an approach to healthier living, environmental stewardship and local job creation.  dr. connie nelson, director of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s food security research network, will describe five social innovations that have helped grow and strengthen the resilience of the local food movement.  

what is the future of forestry in northwestern ontario?

saturday, feb. 20 – 2 pm at the waverley resource library, 285 red river rd.

dr. mathew leitch, associate professor in the faculty of natural resources management, will talk about the forestry industry and whole-tree mapping, which will help northwestern ontario become more competitive by increasing business opportunities.


thomas tallis litany: what the sources tell us

saturday, march 19 – 2 pm at the mary jl black library, 901 s. edward st.

by comparing and contrasting the tallis litany as found in the christ church collection, dr. dean jobin-bevans, associate professor in lakehead’s department of music, will draw conclusions about the role of the music editor and trace the publication history of the famous litany by thomas tallis.
