lakehead thunder bay’s 2021 convocation ceremony will honour exceptional people for their important contributions

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 thunder bay will recognize five exceptional people at this year’s main convocation ceremony being held virtually on saturday, may 29 at 11 am est.

the honourable murray sinclair, rosalind lockyer, and donald paterson will receive honorary degrees for their distinguished achievements.

“this year, during 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s thunder bay convocation ceremonies, we will be conferring honorary degrees to three people who have dedicated their lives to making northwestern ontario, our province, and, indeed, our entire country, better for everyone,” said dr. moira mcpherson, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s president and vice-chancellor.

lakehead will also honour seppo paivalainen and vince mirabelli by naming them fellows of the university – for contributing to the growth, development, welfare and well-being of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“both vince and seppo have helped lakehead become the exceptional university that 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and alumni are proud to call their alma mater,” dr. mcpherson added.

the main convocation ceremony will also include an address from dr. mcpherson.

honorary degree recipients

the honourable murray sinclair llb msc ipc

the honourable murray sinclair is an anishinaabe and a member of the peguis first nation. he is a fourth degree chief of the midewiwin society, a traditional healing and spiritual society of the anishinaabe nation responsible for protecting the teachings, ceremonies, laws, and history of the anishinaabe.

he graduated from law school in 1979. he has been involved with the justice system in manitoba for over 40 years, as a lawyer representing indigenous clients, as an adjunct professor of law at robson hall, as associate chief judge of manitoba’s provincial court and as a justice of the court of queen’s bench.

he was the first indigenous judge appointed in manitoba and canada’s second. he served as co-chair of the aboriginal justice inquiry of manitoba and as chief commissioner of canada’s indian residential schools truth and reconciliation commission.

he retired from the bench and was appointed to the senate in 2016.

after retiring from the senate in early 2021, he returned to the practice of law and mentoring young lawyers. he is currently writing his memoirs.

he will be granted an honorary doctor of laws.

rosalind lockyer

after seven years at memorial university and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , rosalind earned a psychology degree and teaching credentials.

after 20 years as a teacher, entrepreneur, and community developer, rosalind became blatantly aware of systemic issues that keep women from achieving their life goals.

in 1995, rosalind founded paro centre for women’s enterprise, channeling her experience, passion, and determination to work for positive change.

today, paro is recognized as the largest peer lending network in north america, and one of the strongest canadian business development organizations supporting its unique form of women-centred social enterprise with more than 180+ circles located across ontario.

rosalind has dedicated her life to supporting gender equality and building sustainable livelihoods for thousands of women who need it the most.

supporting women who are disadvantaged by the intersectionality of poverty, racism, sexism, ageism, and disability is central to her role as founder and ceo of paro centre for women’s enterprise and co-founder of the women’s economic council.

rosalind is treasurer of the international e-rotary for social innovators, board director for ontario for women’s enterprise organizations of canada, and ontario hub representative for the women’s entrepreneur knowledge hub.

recognized for her notable efforts building paro, her collaborative approach – with particular emphasis on women – rosalind was called “one of the most remarkable social entrepreneurs in the world” by the office of social enterprise, medei, ontario government.

she received the prestigious influential women of northern ontario award-public sector, and the women of the decade in community leadership, the most prestigious award offered by the women’s economic forum 2018 in new delhi, india.

rosalind will be granted an honorary doctor of humane letters.

donald paterson

donald paterson was born in fort william, ontario – now thunder bay. he left thunder bay at age 12 to attend an independent school (ashbury college) in rockcliffe park, ottawa as a boarding student.

following high school, donald attended the university of toronto attaining a bachelor’s degree in history and political science.

donald returned to thunder bay and joined the family business, ending his career with paterson globalfoods as chairman of the corporation. he went on to chair the newly formed tbaytel corporation and was instrumental in transforming tbaytel from a city department to a fully independent corporate entity with a modern governance structure.

during the course of his career, donald performed many years of volunteer activity within thunder bay as well as provincially and nationally. he was the founding president of the ontario arts foundation and served in that capacity for several years.

donald married lori jean hacio and together they raised a daughter and two sons of whom they are very proud. donald and lori are blessed with three grandchildren with another expected this year.

he will be granted an honorary doctor of commerce.

seppo paivalainen

seppo paivalainen photo

seppo was born and raised in northwestern ontario. having left thunder bay for his legal education, he returned with janice in 1985 to raise their family. they were avid fans of their children in various activities and sports.

seppo has served as a lawyer for over 40 years, enjoying his interactions with clients on issues important to them. for 17 years he also served thunder bay as honorary consul for the republic of finland.

his community involvement includes serving on the boards of the northern ontario school of medicine, canadian suomi foundation, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and suomi-koti of thunder bay. he has also been an active member of numerous service clubs and community groups.

seppo enjoys simple outdoor pleasures with janice such as skiing, chopping firewood, or just sitting beside a summer lake.

vince mirabelli

vince mirabelli photo

vince mirabelli was born and raised in thunder bay to his loving parents caterina and giuseppe, who immigrated from lamezia terme, calabria, italy in 1954. his parents taught and instilled in him their own virtuous values of a hard work ethic while loving and taking care of your family and friends.

he became a realtor at the age of 27 and has enjoyed a successful 14-year career thus far. his career has allowed him the opportunity to support 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and give back to the community in any way he is able to.

his 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 contributions include student bursaries to the bora laskin faculty of law and the northern ontario school of medicine as well as donations to new capital building campaigns. in the community his generosity knows no bounds as he is involved with many charitable organizations such as the thunder bay regional health sciences foundation and camp quality.

in october of 2019, the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 alumni association named vince as an honourary alumni for his contributions to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and its 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

vince will tell you that his most important accomplishment so far has been the birth of his son matteo in february of 2020 just after his 40th birthday in january. he calls his newborn son a future 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 thunderwolf in the making.

the hon. jean charest, helen cromarty, and dr. keijo virtanen will each receive an honorary doctorate for their work in politics, health care, and research on finnish immigration to canada, respectively.

“honorary degree recipients are chosen based on their excellent contributions to society and their remarkable service,” said dr. brian stevenson, lakehead’s president and vice-chancellor.

lakehead will also recognize the hard work and dedication of tammy squitti and bill bartley, who will each be named fellow of the university.

murray walberg, chair of lakehead’s board of governors, said these individuals were selected due to their contributions to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“bill bartley and tammy squitti have made a profound impact on 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and this is our way of publically saying thank you,” walberg said.

honorary degree recipients

the hon. jean charest

as deputy prime minister of canada and premier of québec, jean charest is one of canada’s best known political figures.

as minister of the environment, he led his country’s delegation at the 1992 earth summit on the economy and the environment in rio and was praised for his leadership role among g7 countries on climate change and biodiversity.

the charest government has been a world leader on the environment and climate change, and best known for a major initiative for the sustainable development of northern québec called “plan nord”.

under his leadership, québec experienced a sustained period of economic prosperity with stronger economic growth from 2008 to 2012 than the us, europe, canada and ontario, despite a global financial and economic crisis.

for the international arena, his administration was the most active in the history of québec. thus, the charest government initiated an unprecedented labour mobility agreement between france and québec, and convinced canada and the european union to negotiate a broad economic partnership.

jean charest is a partner at mccarthy tétrault. he provides invaluable expertise to the firm’s clients with his in-depth knowledge and experience with public policy, corporate canada and international matters.

as a strategic advisor with a unique perspective, he supports clients on complex transactions, projects and international mandates, as they navigate the global business environment.

jean charest will receive an honorary doctor of laws during the friday afternoon ceremony.

helen cromarty

helen cromarty (barkman) of sachigo lake first nation began her education as a residential school student and attained her hbscn degree from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

during her 45-year career as a nurse, she worked icu-ccu for 23 years. then as health policy analyst/health liaison at nishnawbe aski nation (nan) and special advisor for first nation health at sioux lookout meno ya win health centre (slmhc).

helen was in many leadership roles in the development and implementation of health care programs and services delivered throughout nan and ontario.

she made major contributions in the development of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s native nurses entry program and the aboriginal healing and wellness strategy. at slmhc, she contributed to the traditional and cultural programs and published several articles on health research.

helen was recognized for her work in first nations health by the aboriginal nurses association of canada, nishnawbe aski nation, and the chiefs of ontario.

she has an extensive board and committee experience, including 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , the northern ontario school of medicine, wequedong lodge and aboriginal health services for accreditation canada.

helen is a residential school survivor, friend, sister, aunt, mother, and kookom (grandmother). her husband, dennis franklin cromarty, passed away february 3, 1993. she is proud of their five children and a very proud kookom of three beautiful girls.

upon retiring in 2013, she felt honoured to have completed the circle in her career. her first nursing post was at the sioux lookout indian hospital, now known as the sioux lookout meno ya win health centre.

helen cromarty will receive an honorary doctor of science during the saturday morning ceremony.

dr. keijo virtanen

keijo virtanen’s research work began at the university of turku, finland. he published his doctoral dissertation in 1979 on the return of finnish migrants from overseas countries, particularly the united states and canada.

in addition to migration and ethnicity, his publications focus on the influence of north-american culture in finland, the methodological questions of historical research as well as university and science policy.

he held a number of positions in the university of turku and the academy of finland.

he was appointed the professor of cultural history in 1990, having worked as an acting professor since 1983. he was a research assistant at the university of michigan in 1974-75 and fulbright researcher in 1988-89.

in the 1970s he made several long trips to canada and the united states to microfilm archival material on finnish immigrants.

keijo became the longest-serving rector/president of the university of turku (1997-2012).

he has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the klaipeda university (lithuania) and the university of tartu (estonia). he is the honorary consul of estonia in southwest finland.

after his retirement in 2012, keijo continues with his research on migration.

the john morton center for north american studies was established at the university of turku in 2014 as led by him. he is the chair of the council of the institute of migration. keijo and his wife orvokki have two children, seppo and marjaana, and six grandchildren. seppo has a doctorate in information technology and marjaana in musicology.

keijo virtanen will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters on saturday afternoon.

tammy squitti

tammy squitti is a lakehead alumna and the chairperson on the board of directors of nanabijou childcare centre located on the beautiful 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 thunder bay campus.

she has volunteered with this board of directors for nine years and was instrumental in the planning and construction of the new $3.5 million childcare centre on campus, offering a nurturing learning environment for children of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , faculty, staff and the community.

tammy is a proud aboriginal nisga’a status indian. she graduated from confederation college’s social service worker program and has worked in vocational rehabilitation at the workplace safety & insurance board for 27 years.

she obtained the designation of a registered certified vocational professional from the college of vocational rehabilitation professionals and the vocational rehabilitation association of canada. while working full-time, tammy attended 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 as a part-time student and earned her bachelor of arts degree in may 2006.

tammy’s commitment to the wellness of our community is evident in her 10 years of continuous volunteer service with the thunder bay indian friendship centre in the aboriginal community council program, participating in restorative justice circles to support the people of thunder bay.

she also volunteers with the thunder bay police service sponsorship committee in support of special olympics ontario and the can am police-fire games. tammy is married to robert squitti and her favorite role in life is the one called “mom” to their only child – robert squitti jr.

tammy will be named fellow of the university on saturday morning.

bill bartley

bill bartley was born in atikokan, ontario but soon moved to thunder bay when his father dr. m. w. bartley became the first principal of lakehead technical institute (now 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ).

bill is also a charter student at hammarskjold high school where he graduated prior to entering 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 to complete his bachelor of arts degree.

he followed a career in the transportation and distribution industry. bill also served in the canadian armed forces reserves for over 20 years across canada as well as in germany during the cold war era.

presently, he is both the chair of the lakehead region conservation authority and the source protection authority; secretary / treasurer of the prostate cancer canada network – thunder bay; and treasurer of the 18 (thunder bay) service battalion senate.

bill is a past president of the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 alumni association; past governor of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ; former councillor in the municipality of shuniah; past vice-president of the northwestern ontario municipal association; past board member of the association of municipalities of ontario; and past director of the roma insurance board.

over the past two years, bill has been honoured not only by his fellow alumni but now by his university community. in 2015, bill was awarded the “alumni legacy award’ and now he will be joining his late father as a fellow of the university. he looks forward to his renewed association with 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

bill will be named fellow of the university on saturday afternoon.

lakehead names thunder bay convocation’s 2015 honorary degree recipients and fellow of the university

the university will confer honorary doctorate degrees to margaret phillips, michael rapino and dr. dominic lam, three exceptional people being recognized for their achievements in social justice, entrepreneurship, and health, respectively.

“honorary degree recipients are nominated not only because of the scope of what they have accomplished, but because of how much they have given back to our world, as well,” said dr. brian stevenson, lakehead president & vice-chancellor.

lakehead will also recognize the hard work and dedication of roy piovesana, who will be named a fellow of the university. piovesana has been a pillar of the thunder bay community, a champion of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and a role model and inspiration for generations of 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

lakehead board of governors chair murray walberg said piovesana’s significant contributions to thunder bay and the university are why he is so deserving of this honour. “roy’s commitment and passion for lakehead, teaching, and the arts and history of our region have profoundly benefitted and touched countless people since he graduated from our university 50 years ago,” he said.

dr. stevenson explained that convocation is a time to celebrate achievements, and a time to inspire lakehead’s graduates as they move on to the next phase of their lives. “the stories of our 50th anniversary year’s honorary degree recipients and fellow of the university are examples of our university’s mission statement — teaching 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 how to think, not what to think — and, thus, are the perfect individuals to speak to, and inspire, our graduates.”

margaret phillips is co-founder of the northern woman’s bookstore and was a member of the advisory committee that created the women’s studies program at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

phillips is an alumna of lakehead, receiving her bachelor of arts in political studies in 1980. during most of her adult life, she has worked for social justice, particularly with feminist issues and aboriginal rights. her early work in the recreation field was, for a young woman at that time, pioneering.

phillips has served as a director on the board of inter pares, an international development organization seeking change in the status of women worldwide, and as a board member of the canadian council on social development. she was also the executive director of the lakehead social planning council from 1971 to 1981.

in 2008, the northwestern ontario writers’ workshop honoured phillips by presenting her with the kouhi award for her outstanding contributions to the literature of northwestern ontario.

margaret phillips will receive an honorary doctor of letters.

michael rapino is a lakehead alumnus who became an icon within the music industry.

rapino was named president and chief executive officer of live nation entertainment in 2005 and led its transformation into the number one live music brand in the world, with operations in more than 45 countries and annual revenue exceeding $6.5 billion.

before his career reached such great heights, rapino studied business at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , earning his bachelor of administration in 1989. since then, he has made significant contributions to the advancement of the world’s music industry through his strong business acumen and willingness to be innovative.

dr. dominic lam is a recognized and celebrated doctor, inventor, artist and philanthropist who is proud to be a 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 alumnus.

this world-renowned eye specialist began his post-secondary education at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . dr. lam was born in swatow, china, and grew up in hong kong. he moved to the city of fort william in 1965, received a city scholarship to lakehead and became one of the university’s first international 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

dr. lam obtained his bachelor of science from lakehead in 1967, followed by a master’s degree from the university of british columbia in 1968 and a phd from the university of toronto in 1970. he was a postdoctoral fellow in neurobiology at harvard medical school, eventually joining the faculty in neurobiology and biochemistry.

dr. lam strongly believes in the need to use his research and wealth to benefit humankind. he was instrumental in bringing project orbis, an airplane with ophthalmic equipment and specialists, to china to provide free education, eye care and surgery to those in need.

dr. dominic lam will receive an honorary doctor of science.

fellow of the university

roy piovesana’s life has been one of firsts.

fifty years ago, piovesana graduated from lakehead as president of his class, making him, in many ways, the epitome of this university’s first group of 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 . choosing to remain at lakehead, he became one of the first 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to enrol in one of our graduate programs.

in 1969, he graduated with a master of arts in history, the first for that program and among the first master of arts graduates of our university. as a teacher, piovesana inspired and educated generations of curious minds over the course of a career that provided countless thunder bay 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 the opportunity to pursue their post-secondary education dreams at home.

piovesana became a fixture within thunder bay’s arts and heritage community. as a historian, he continues to distinguish himself regionally, nationally, and internationally. a leading expert on italian-canadian history and religious history, he is one of the driving forces behind the institute of italian studies - 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 (formerly the chair in italian studies - 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ), where he has served as president since 2011.
