her experiences as the child of parents who emigrated from the soviet union to israel prompted professor mirit grabarski’s research into why some immigrants find more success in canada’s labour market than others do.

“i heard a lot of stories about immigrants searching for jobs and about integration through my parents and their friends,” said dr. grabarski, an assistant professor in 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s faculty of business administration who is leading the social sciences and humanities-funded research project.

“i noticed that not everyone achieved their professional goals and because of that i was wondering what made the difference.”

photo of dr. mirit grabarski

as an adult immigrant coming to canada, dr. grabarski tried understanding and measuring the motivational cognitive component behind that difference - which she labelled “career empowerment” in her phd dissertation.

“the next natural step was to take it back to where it started, which is immigrants. i was lucky to have dr. jelena zikic take interest in this project and i hope we will be able to provide some interesting insights,” she said.

dr. zikic is with the school of human resource management at york university. together, the researchers will explore why the integration of immigrants into the canadian labour market is not living up to its full potential.

upon arrival to canada, highly educated and skilled immigrant professionals are underemployed, which weakens the goals of the national economic policy and the immigrants’ own career goals.

this is why it is important to understand how employers can support the integration of skilled immigrants into the workforce and better utilize their human capital.

“while recruitment of immigrant employees occurs on a regular basis, the process of organizational integration beyond entry point is still very much unclear. this research will investigate the immigration process and identify practices of inclusion for skilled immigrants that support the long-term goals of the canadian government,” dr. grabarski said.

she and her team are receiving a $64,000 insight development grant from sshrc to perform this study over two years.

the research team will consider both organizational and individual perspectives in seeking to understand successful career integration for skilled immigrants.

for dr. meridith lovell-johnston in 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s faculty of education and her research team, their sshrc-funded project exploring humanizing learning was inspired when post-secondary schools had to move online due to covid-19.

photo of dr. meridith lovell-johnston

in 2020, ecampus ontario circulated a funding call seeking proposals to develop open access resources in a variety of different areas, including humanizing learning.

“this call coincided with events in our own faculty around the move to completely online learning due to the covid-19 pandemic,” said dr. lovell-johnston, who works at lakehead orillia.

in the second year, they will seek other post-secondary educators external to their schools to widen the participant pool. as well, they will implement and assess humanizing learning principles into courses in the faculty of education through their working groups.

“looking more widely at the topic, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who traditionally face barriers to post-secondary learning, such as mature 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , international 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , and others, also experience a number of significant barriers to online learning,” said dr. lovell-johnston.

research has found that moving online by necessity rather than choice creates headaches for the average student – headaches which present even more challenges for mature 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , international 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , and others.

“in developing the sshrc proposal, we wanted to examine the first transition to post-secondary, when these 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 would experience online instruction while also adapting to university or college studies. we were very excited to reach out to our local colleges to collaborate on the proposal,” dr. lovell-johnston said.

the research team, which is receiving a $61,804 insight development grant, includes co-applicants dr. joan chambers and dr. sonia mastrangelo, who are both with the faculty of education at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

collaborators include helen dewaard, lucas johnson, sabreena macelheron, steven secord, who are all with lakehead’s faculty of education; kimberly veneziale from confederation college; and wayne brown from georgian college.

“congratulations to each of these researchers and thank you to sshrc for its continued support,” said dr. andrew p. dean, lakehead’s vice-president, research and innovation.

“research in social sciences and humanities has a long and successful history at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . these insight grants show the diversity, timeliness, and applicable nature of this research.”

in 2021/22, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 received nearly $2 million in assistance from the research support fund to support the indirect costs of research, which includes costs for supporting the management of intellectual property, research and administration, ethics and regulatory compliance, research resources, and research facilities.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers receiving more than $1 million from sshrc

june 16, 2022 – orillia and thunder bay, ont

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers are receiving more than $1 million in funding from the social sciences and humanities research council of canada.

dr. cheryl lousley, an associate professor in the departments of english and interdisciplinary studies, and her team are receiving a $319,473 insight grant.

photo of dr. cheryl lousley

for up to five years, they will study how three aesthetic modes – the poetic, the documentary, and the speculative – are used by indigenous, black, latinx, and asian-diasporic writers, filmmakers, and artists to grapple with and change debilitating political ecologies.

“we will examine how cultural production, political economy, settler-colonialism, and environmentality intersected in four periods of the canadian nation-building project,” dr. lousley said.

this research will focus on historical- and site-specific case studies, including racialized railway ecologies; notions of foreign and invasive species; resilient cities; canadian labour and resource extraction in latin america; and indigenous “wonderworks,” which are modes of the fantastic.

this research will fill a large gap. across the social sciences and humanities, research on racialization and ecology in canada is limited, generally focusing on specific events of environmental injustice, not broader social formations of colonialism, race and ecology.

the research team will be comprised of three tenured scholars, four tenure-track emerging scholars, a postdoctoral researcher, and a number of student research assistants.

dr. jodie murphy, an associate professor in the school of social work, along with her research team, dr. karen mcqueen, dr. lori chambers and ainsley miller, are receiving a $145,305 insight grant to explore sexual assault disclosure among sexual and gender minorities for up to three years.

photo of dr. jodie murphy

a better understanding is needed of the disclosure experience and unique needs of sexual and gender minorities who are sexually assaulted in order to develop interventions and safe spaces for them to attain support for sexual victimization.

this qualitative research seeks to explore the first-hand accounts of four distinct groups of sexual and gender minorities (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) who experience sexual assault and disclose it to a formal support provider (counsellors, police, medical professionals, teachers, religious leaders, community providers).

statistics have found that individuals from sexual and gender minority populations are sexually assaulted at a rate three times higher than the heterosexual population in canada and violent victimization (including rape and sexual assault) is four times higher than heterosexuals in the us.

“research on sexual assault has typically been conducted through a heteronormative lens that assumes females are victims and males are perpetrators, which neglects the unique experiences and perspectives of sexual and gender minorities who experience sexual assault,” dr. murphy said.

dr. pauline sameshima, a professor in the faculty of education and the canada research chair in arts integrated research, is receiving a $97,950 aid to scholarly journals grant over three years, which will go toward increasing dissemination, discoverability and readership of the journal of the canadian association for curriculum studies.

photo of dr. pauline sameshima

“this funding will be used to pay the managing editor, five bloggers, a communications coordinator, and technology support,” said dr. sameshima, who became the journal’s editor-in-chief in 2015 with dr. holly tsun haggarty, a lakehead alumna, as managing editor.

this is the second aid to scholarly journals grant received by jcacs. in 2019, jcacs received $100,930 to develop innovations to build jcacs’ community, support, and mentorship structures.

jcacs expanded to 24 people including a french team. the journal also developed a facebook community, a twitter account, a youtube channel, and a medium publication.

dr. sameshima said the registered number of users has grown from 448 in 2015 to 2,544 in 2021. in 2015 the total number of pdf downloads was 4,031, whereas in 2021 it was 29,965.

jcacs publishes articles in english and in french (as racec) that address curriculum issues of interest to canada and canadians and an international readership. it is the journal of the canadian association for curriculum studies (cacs), which is a constituent association of the canadian society for the study of education.

“congratulations to each researcher and thank you to sshrc for its continued support for 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ,” said dr. andrew p. dean, lakehead’s vice-president, research and innovation.

“these projects show the variety of quality research that 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 does in the areas of humanities and social sciences. they also highlight the important research in the fields of social justice and equality at the university.”

the research support fund is a federal funding program for post-secondary institutions in canada to support some of the costs associated with managing research funded by the canadian institutes of health research, natural sciences and engineering research council, and social sciences and humanities research council.

in 2020/21, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 received nearly $2 million in assistance from the research support fund to support the indirect costs of research, which includes costs for supporting the management of intellectual property, research and administration, ethics and regulatory compliance, research resources, and research facilities.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 professors receiving $470k from sshrc for important research

october 29, 2021 – orillia and thunder bay, ont.

seven professors at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 are receiving a total of more than $470,000 from the social sciences and humanities research council of canada to fund their important research projects.

dr. daniel krupp, assistant professor in interdisciplinary studies at lakehead orillia, is receiving an insight grant of more than $94,000 to examine inequality and competition.

dr. daniel krupp

“our research finds that local competition amplifies the effect of inequality on conflict, and that this interaction may occur as a consequence of relative deprivation,” dr. krupp said.

“this means that people who are in direct competition with each other will feel greater relative deprivation than those who are competing with a broader swath of the population.”

dr. krupp and his team hypothesize that competition – not similarity or fairness – drives relative deprivation.

this project will test their hypothesis by building a series of mathematical models to formalize the effects of inequality, the scale of competition, and similarity on the evolution of conflict.

“with these models, we can study the ways in which similarity foments conflict when it is associated with kinship and the extent of local competition,” dr. krupp said.

this research will help bring understanding to the psychology of relative deprivation and be of interest to social scientists, civil servants, and members of the public.

dr. lida fan

dr. lida fan, associate professor in the school of social work at lakehead thunder bay, is receiving an insight development grant of more than $63,000 to study the prospect of upward mobility hypothesis. this hypothesis assumes that low-income people tolerate inequality in wealthy countries like the us and canada because of the hope that they, or their offspring, may make it up the income ladder.

“in this research we will cast doubt on the prospect of upward mobility theory by exploring alternative explanations within the canadian context,” dr. fan said.

“the purpose of this inquiry is to reveal whether individuals see upward mobility as unrealistic in many instances, or they see the barriers of upward mobility and limited choices available but have given up the chance to challenge the situation.”

the results of this study may contribute to the understanding of public tolerance toward inequality and redistribution, and offer new information about a comprehensive set of determinants of public attitudes towards inequality in the contemporary canadian context.

dr. ellen field, assistant professor in the faculty of education at lakehead orillia, is receiving an insight development grant of more than $52,000 to study climate change education practice in ontario and policy in canada.

dr. ellen field

“in schools across canada, teachers decide how they will integrate, discuss, or avoid climate change education on a daily basis,” dr. field said, adding that there can be ramifications with how teachers decide to discuss it in class.

focusing on comprehensive national data on climate change education, this research will provide further depth and context by monitoring the policies of jurisdictional climate change education, such as within the ministries of education and school boards across canada.

dr. field and her team, dr. paul berger from lakehead and dr. andrea drewes from rider university, will also examine teachers’ personal and professional beliefs on climate change education and how those views inform their decisions about the inclusion/exclusion of climate change content and how they deliver that content.

researchers will also profile case studies of transformative and transgressive climate change education in ontario schools.

this research will provide a more holistic picture of teacher practice that accounts for teachers’ beliefs and factors that teachers identify as influencing their integration, or lack of integration, of climate change education. it will also document how climate change education is already occurring in transformative ways in some pockets.

“this will inform policy responses and professional development directions. the research will contribute to scholarship in the emerging field of climate change education internationally and nationally through academic scholarly contributions,” dr. field said.

this study will support two graduate assistants completing med programs for the full duration of the research. dr. field will support the 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 as full members of the research team and they will participate in all stages of the project.

dr. andrew p. dean, lakehead’s vice-president, research and innovation congratulated each of the researchers and thanked sshrc for funding these import projects.

“these insight grants will do exactly what they are intended to do – provide insight into important questions that range from environmental education to inequality to understanding stress for post-secondary 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , and everything in between.”

the research support fund is a federal funding program for post-secondary institutions in canada to support some of the costs associated with managing research funded by the canadian institutes of health research, natural sciences and engineering research council, and social sciences and humanities research council.

in 2020/21, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 received nearly $2 million in assistance from the research support fund to support the indirect costs of research, which includes costs for supporting the management of intellectual property, research and administration, ethics and regulatory compliance, research resources, and research facilities.

lakehead professors receive funding for research on pre-modern man, communicating climate change

photo of dr. matt tocheri and dr. lindsay galway

october 18, 2017 – thunder bay, on

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers are receiving nearly $900,000 in sshrc funding for important projects that may change the way you think about the world.

dr. matt tocheri is receiving $305,000 from the social sciences and humanities research council of canada for a five-year project investigating pre-modern and modern humans.

dr. tocheri is an assistant professor in anthropology at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and the canada research chair in human origins.

“we’re trying to determine if our species played a role, either directly or indirectly, in the extinction of homo floresiensis,” dr. tocheri said.

the discovery of homo floresiensis was announced to the world on october 28, 2004 in the journal nature, which described another human species that also walked on two legs and made and used stone tools.

however, some of the major differences were that adults were only one metre tall and had extremely small, chimpanzee-sized brains, as well as body proportions and other primitive features not seen for the past 1.5 million years.

homo floresiensis, which is thought to have gone extinct about 50,000 years ago, provides important perspectives on the ramifications of losing biological and cultural diversity, and helps society make informed decisions about preserving diversity of all species, tocheri added.

dr. lindsay galway, an assistant professor in health sciences, is receiving $54,478 to spend two years examining how to communicate climate change impacts and solutions to promote citizen engagement.

the research will focus on the northern regions of canadian provinces that are characterized by remoteness, political marginalization, dependence on natural resource extraction, tensions between economic and energy policy, and heightened vulnerability to climate change, in two case study communities: thunder bay (northern ontario) and prince george (northern british columbia).

“we will document public beliefs, attitudes, and perceptions of climate change and climate action in the case study communities,” dr. galway said. “then we will develop climate change communication strategies aimed at promoting citizen engagement with climate change in the context of canada’s provincial norths.”

dr. maya gislason from simon fraser university and dr. chris buse from the university of northern british columbia will assist with the research.

“this funding demonstrates that sshrc recognizes the important research happening at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ,” said dr. andrew p. dean, vice-president, research and innovation. “thank you to all of our researchers for their dedication to finding answers to important questions.”

funding from sshrc also generates support from the federal research support fund to offset the indirect costs of research incurred by universities. in 2017/18, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 will receive nearly $2 million in assistance from the research support fund to support the indirect costs of research, which includes costs for supporting the management of intellectual property, research and administration, ethics and regulatory compliance, research resources, and research facilities.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 receives funding for research on important social issues

september 28, 2016 – thunder bay, on

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 is receiving more than $500,000 in funding from the social sciences and humanities research council (sshrc) to provide insight into some important issues facing canadians today.

researchers will be examining a number of diverse issues, including aboriginal land use in northern communities, the study of domestic violence and community policing, and how history has shaped canada – u.s. relations.

dr. frederico oliveira, assistant professor of anthropology, received $70,325 to study the importance of social structure and family relations on land use practices in the first nations communities of lac seul and slate falls in northwestern ontario.

“the need to develop a consistent investigation of the impact of external influences on first nations communities such as these, along with an understanding of the internal structure within the communities is critical,” said dr. oliveira.

his study will support negotiations with government and industry about natural resource development in ancestral lands, while contributing to meaningful discussions about indigenous sovereignty in canada.

dr. angela hovey, an assistant professor with the school of social work in orillia is receiving a grant of $67,404 for a unique multidisciplinary project – domestic violence: new policing and community prevention – as part of an ongoing collaboration with the ontario provincial police (opp), and local social service agencies.  the team involves lakehead researchers from social work, criminology and women’s studies.

the research team will examine how police currently respond to a high volume of domestic violence calls and how a community-based preventative approach might be used to respond more effectively.

“we’re extremely pleased to receive the grant from sshrc, as the study will provide significant new contributions because of our partnership with the opp and the unprecedented access to police data on domestic violence,” said dr. hovey.

dr. michael stevenson, associate professor of history and interdisciplinary studies, is receiving $54,478 for his project, building a cold war consensus: the eisenhower administration and canada-u.s. relations, 1953-1961.

the study will examine canada-u.s. relations during the presidency of dwight eisenhower and the leadership of canadian prime ministers louis st. laurent and john diefenbaker to explore the pattern of diplomatic stability that has determined the ‘special relationship’ between canada and the united states.

“the characteristic tolerant accommodation that defines canada-u.s. relations was developed during these years,” dr. stevenson commented. “this study will generate important new insights into a neglected area of canadian and american history and will help us understand the place of canada and the united states in the wider world.”

dr. andrew p. dean, vice-president, research and innovation, is extremely pleased by the high quality research in social sciences and humanities at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“due to the hard work of our researchers, we are gaining an outstanding reputation for engaging research that is proving beneficial for people in canada and around the world,” dr. dean said.

lakehead anthropologists tracing origins of food production in northern ontario

sept. 17, 2015 – thunder bay, on

dr. matthew boyd and his research team are receiving $381,300 to uncover the most northern evidence of farming in the ancient americas.

dr. boyd, associate professor in anthropology at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and his team will spend five years tracing the origins of food production (agriculture) in the boreal forest by studying historic and ancient garden sites in lake of the woods, ont.

researchers will develop a deeper understanding of the function of these gardens and how they fit into first nations societies through archival research, elder interviews and map biographies.

researchers will also reconstruct past food choices of early indigenous populations in this region by analyzing organic residues preserved on artifacts. dr. boyd and his team will also trace subtle changes in precontact land use, including the onset of shifting cultivation, by analyzing lake sediment and conducting archaeological excavations.

“this project will significantly revise our understanding of the lives of subarctic peoples at the eve of european contact,” dr. boyd said.

in total, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers are receiving $637,800 from the social sciences and humanities research council of canada (sshrc).

dr. michel beaulieu, associate professor in history, will use $74,000 over two years to help northern ontario communities use lessons from the past in the forestry industry.

dr. beaulieu will conduct a historical analysis of resource-based communities in northern ontario and uruguay, examining each in light of national and international trends in the region’s primary industries. lakehead history professor dr. ronald harpelle is a co-applicant on the project.

“we will look at both sides of the hemispheric coin to better understand how communities developed and adapted to global shifts in the forest industry,” dr. beaulieu said.

“our researchers are some of the best in the world,” said dr. andrew dean, vice-president, research and innovation. “these projects will be of great benefit to ontario and canada,” dr. dean said.

“this exceptional research couldn’t happen without sshrc funding,” said dr. moira mcpherson, provost and vice-president (academic).

lakehead’s sshrc grant recipients examining lead exposure, climate change

december 22, 2014 – thunder bay and orillia, on

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 professors and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 are receiving nearly $720,000 in funding from the social sciences and humanities research council (sshrc) to help answer some fascinating questions.

some of these outstanding research programs will investigate lead exposure in members of the colonial-era british navy, analyze the protest media landscape during recent anti-austerity protests, examine how people responded to climate change over a long period of time, and determine how european immigrants influenced the culture of death in canada.

dr. tamara varney, associate professor in anthropology, and scientists from memorial university, the university of saskatchewan and the canadian light source (cls) synchrotron are receiving an insight grant worth $202,543 over four years to investigate lead exposure patterns in british naval populations from colonial-era west indies.

they are examining skeletal remains from three cemeteries in newfoundland and antigua, west indies using a synchrotron radiation x-ray fluorescence laboratory. this equipment will help dr. varney determine the extent of lead levels while those individuals were alive.

dr. varney is leading this interdisciplinary team of researchers utilizing the expertise and technology of the cls synchrotron facility in saskatoon.

the team’s objective is to address the proposed idea that lead poisoning negatively impacted the quality of life for the british military serving in the colonial west indies. one of the historical cemeteries involved will allow regular naval personnel to be examined and the remains of enslaved labourers who provided skilled labour support to the naval dockyard in antigua.

“working at the canadian light source has been an amazing opportunity. without its advanced analytical capabilities this project would not be possible, and i have sshrc to thank for making it all come together,” dr. varney said.

“i am extremely happy with the initial success of this project and amazed at the volume of information that is being collected using the synchrotron,” said dr. ian coulthard, staff scientist at the cls.

“dr. varney’s research is a great example of the diversity of research topics that fall under the synchrotron umbrella, and this is the first sshrc grant awarded specifically with direct ties to the cls. i hope this is a sign of future growth in the social science research fields at the cls.”

lead was pervasive in the colonial environment – contained in everyday items such as utensils for cooking and eating, alcohol distillation equipment and medicinal compounds. lead is readily absorbed by biological organisms including humans, and exposure to the toxic metal remains a health issue in the modern world.

dr. sandra jeppesen, a professor in interdisciplinary studies in orillia, is receiving an insight development grant of $69,995 over two years to analyze the protest media landscape in spain, italy and greece during recent anti-austerity protests.

dr. jeppesen will use social movement documents, interviews with activists and more to examine various forms of media that support, emerge from or represent protest movements.

“this sshrc insight development grant will help us better understand how emerging groups of politically active citizens – what the occupy movement has deemed the 99% – are using new digital media forms to organize protest movements against austerity, and how these media practices carry over into other social justice campaigns in between protest mobilizations,” dr. jeppesen said.

dr. pallavi das, an associate professor in history, is receiving an insight development grant of $58,530 over two years to examine the social-economic impacts of climate change and how people respond to it. the focus of the study is a horticultural community in the himalayas.

“i am very happy to have this assistance from sshrc. it would have been difficult to do this research without the insight development grant,” dr. das said.

this research will examine the impacts of climate change on people from 1940 until 2013 in the himalayas. it will stress the experience and perception of ordinary people while also considering experts, government officers and business owners.

mountain ecosystems and communities such as those in the himalayas are more vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change.

at least four 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will assist with the research programs described above.

kimberly shirley, a master’s history student at lakehead, is receiving a sshrc scholarship for $17,500 to spend a year determining how immigrants influenced the culture of death in canada.

kimberly will examine symbolism on the grave markers of europeans who immigrated and settled in and around thunder bay. this research will assist kimberly in writing her thesis.

“death is often treated more like an afterthought than a main subject in research. i like thinking out of the box when deciding on a topic,” kimberly said, adding that it would have been difficult to do this research without the sshrc scholarship.

the scholarship will allow her to purchase equipment to undertake her research and visit the national archive in ottawa.

dr. andrew dean, vice-president, research, economic development & innovation, is proud of the research happening at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“due to the hard work of our researchers, we are gaining even more of a reputation for engaging research that is proving beneficial for people in canada and around the world,” dr. dean said.
