阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and the thunder bay public library are offering free in conversation talks with experts who will describe how the internet changed reviewing culture, food control during the first world war, and ergonomics.  

on saturday, jan. 27 at 2 pm, dr. monica flegel and dr. judith leggatt from lakehead’s english department will present a talk at the brodie library called fans versus rotten tomatoes: how the internet has changed reviewing culture.

this talk will describe how the democratization of criticism in the digital age has led to clashes between fans, professional critics, and academics over whose opinion should matter most when it comes to popular culture.  

 on saturday, march 17 at 2 pm, beverly soloway from lakehead’s history department will give a talk at the brodie library called kitchen soldiers: feeding the home front in wwi.

during the first world war, the lakehead – and all of canada – undertook a plan of food control to provide for overseas soldiers and allies.  this talk looks at how food regulations, thriftiness, and substitutions impacted lakehead homes including a discussion on food, family meals, and suggested recipes.  

on saturday, april 7 at 2 pm, dr. kathryn sinden from lakehead’s kinesiology department will offer a talk at the waverley library called ergonomics and work: using research to develop tools and processes that improve worker safety.

the ergonomic chair. the ergonomic mouse. the ergonomic shovel. the list goes on. the word “ergonomic” is used to describe many of the tools used in our daily lives. this in conversation talk will discuss how research informs ergonomics and work design to reduce risk factors that are linked to workplace injury.

this talk has been postponed due to weather. lakehead orillia’s popular speaker series, in conversation, begins the new year with a talk on tuesday, jan. 17 by dr. frances helyar about the evolution of teacher education in simcoe county.

since the inception of common schooling in ontario, attitudes toward teacher training have shifted. recurrent themes include the tension over theory versus practice. in this talk, dr. helyar will present an overview of the history of teacher education in ontario and provide insights about the present and future of teacher training in simcoe county.

dr. helyar is the chair of education at lakehead orillia and teaches courses about the history, philosophy, and sociology of education. she is an educational historian and is currently writing a book about acadian education from 1900 to 1940.

dr. helyar’s in conversation talk takes place at the orillia public library on tuesday, jan. 17 at 6:15 pm.

dr. matt tocheri, canada research chair in human origins, assistant professor of anthropology, will discuss what we know so far about the extinct human species known as homo floresiensis or the so-called “hobbits” of human evolution.

saturday, nov. 26 – privacy, security and secrecy

do we have to sacrifice our privacy in order to ensure public security? as the debate is presently framed it seems, unfortunately, that we do. reframing it in terms of secrecy, however, points the way to a happier resolution. join dr. d. anthony lariviere from lakehead’s department of philosophy for this discussion.

saturday, feb. 11, 2017 – life and death and nitrogen

chemist fritz haber invented a process that doubled agricultural output; a few years later he supervised the gassing of canadian troops at the 2nd battle of ypres. this talk will discuss haber's nitrogen-fixation process and legacy on the 100th anniversary of world war i. join dr. craig mackinnon from lakehead’s department of chemistry for this talk.

saturday, march 11, 2017 – the other "f" word: fat oppression and finding ways to fight it

it is a rare day that we do not encounter rhetoric about the “obesity epidemic.” a staple of media, public health campaigns, and advertisements for the hugely profitable weight loss industry, we are constantly told that fat is unhealthy and that only thin bodies are beautiful. presenter dr. connie russell, faculty of education, will unpack such messages, describe the impacts of fat shaming, and point to different ways we might combat weight-based oppression so that everybody can flourish. 

saturday, april 1 – the other end of the line: stories from inside india's call centres

with approximately 350,000 employees, india’s call centres employ less than 0.1 percent of india’s estimated 470 million strong work force. yet stories about indian call centres are everywhere – in print, on screen, and online.  who is really at the other end of the line?  and what can call centre stories tell us about the impact of globalization on everyday life? dr. anna guttman from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s department of english will host this talk.

saturday, may 20 – what does the free, prior and informed consent of indigenous peoples mean for resource development? 

the supreme court of canada has clearly spelled out that governments have a duty to consult with indigenous peoples if they are undertaking any activity – including natural resource development – that may infringe constitutionally protected aboriginal and treaty rights. now canada is promising to uphold the united nations declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples requiring the free, prior and informed consent of indigenous peoples before development occurs. what does this mean for natural resource development? dr. peggy smith from lakehead’s faculty of natural resources management will host this talk.

experts from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 will give free presentations about dementia, aboriginal people’s legal rights, climate change, indigenous children and adoption, and the development of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 during its first 50 years.

“in conversation introduces the general public to the world of academia,” said barb philp, head of adult services at the thunder bay public library. “we’re excited that in conversation is returning for a second year.”

lakehead president and vice-chancellor dr. brian stevenson said this is an excellent opportunity for the community to learn more about interesting topics presented by members of the university faculty.

people living with dementia often are stigmatized, avoided, and defined solely by their diagnosis of dementia. but in fact, when we see beyond labels and stigma, people living with dementia have significant contributions to make. this presentation will focus on what professor elaine wiersma and her research team have learned from people living with dementia.
