history faculty receive $74,000 sshrc research grant

michel s. beaulieu and ronald harpelle  have been awarded $74,000 from the social sciences and humanities research council of canada to help northern ontario communities use lessons from the past in the forestry industry.

beaulieu and harpelle will conduct a historical analysis of resource-based communities in northern ontario and uruguay, examining each in light of national and international trends in the region’s primary industries. “we will look at both sides of the hemispheric coin to better understand how communities developed and adapted to global shifts in the forest industry,” dr. beaulieu said.

in total, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers are receiving $637,800 from the social sciences and humanities research council of canada (sshrc).

“our researchers are some of the best in the world,” said dr. andrew dean, vice-president, research and innovation. “these projects will be of great benefit to ontario and canada,” dr. dean said. “this exceptional research couldn’t happen without sshrc funding,” said dr. moira mcpherson, provost and vice-president (academic).

for over one hundred years, the champlain society has echoed the voices of some of canada’s most eloquent citizens throughout its mission to increase public awareness of, and accessibility to, canada’s rich store of historical records.through its books and digital collection, the society makes the adventures, explorations, discoveries, and opinions that have shaped canada available to all who have an interest in its past.

dr. beaulieu joins an esteemed group who have previously held the position. they range from noted academics such as harold innis, donald creighton and jennifer brown to former ontario premier leslie frost and former prime ministers robert borden and r.b. bennet.

new work makes substantial contribution to knowledge of the first world war

to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the first world war, the latest issue of the thunder bay historical museum society’s journal, papers & records, is devoted to northwestern ontario’s experience during the conflict.

original work by alumni, current 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , and faculty members within the department of history and northern studies reflect the contribution - both at home and abroad - of a regional community to an event that help shape the twentieth century. this issue is also the last to be co-edited dr. peter raffo.

copies can be purchased at the thunder bay museum and will also be available at the symposium on the first world war being held on the 8 november.

department of history enters partnership with the thunder bay public library to commemorate first world war

this week in history one hundred years ago, marks the beginning of the first world war. the effects of which could be felt every day in the communities of fort william and port arthur between 1914 and 1918. the local newspapers printed victory loan advertisements, editorial reports and stories on an almost daily basis. while the impact of the first world war is felt differently today, it is no less significant than it was one hundred years ago.tbpl first world war centennial project logo

the thunder bay public library is spearheading a community partnership to commemorate the centennial of the first world war. members of the partnership, which includes the library, the city of thunder bay archives, city of thunder bay heritage advisory committee, the northwestern ontario sports hall of fame, the thunder bay military museum, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 history department and the northwestern ontario aviation heritage centre, will contribute photographs and records to a dynamic online exhibit depicting life in thunder bay during the war.

the library will host and administer the exhibit at www.tbpl.ca. visit the website and click on research / world war one for a sneak peek. new stories, photos and documents will be added throughout the next four years. the public will be invited to contribute their first world war stories, photos and documents at a launch planned for early november.
