阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 research and innovation week

professor will explore the mysteries – and mathematics – of the viral universe during lakehead’s r and i week

march 2, 2022 – orillia and thunder bay, ont.

can mathematics help us design anti-viral medications or even repurpose viruses for genetic therapies?

on monday, march 7 at 7 pm, dr. reidun twarock, a professor of mathematical virology at the university of york in the uk, will present “viral disease through the lens of geometry” via zoom, during 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s research and innovation week.

this talk is hosted by lakehead’s faculty of science and environmental studies as part of its science speaker series.

dr. twarock will discuss gaining new perspectives through mathematical modelling on how viruses assemble, evolve, and infect their hosts.

photo of dr. reidun twarock

“i will start off by introducing viral symmetry, inviting people on a journey into the ‘virosphere’ – the viral universe,” she said. “although viruses can be very different from one another, they follow a few common rules. once you put your finger on them, you have a lot of power over viruses.”

mathematics can predict the lattice structures of viruses, and knowledge of those symmetries can be used to fight the viruses. dr. twarock will also show how this technique can be used to discover ways to use the virus as a shell for delivering genetic therapies – a type of bio nanotechnology.

dr. twarock said one characteristic that makes viruses successful is their ability to code for the protein components of the virus as well as how to efficiently put the virus together.

it’s sort of like ikea furniture with the pieces and the instructions all contained in one small bundle. once you understand the geometry involved in the rules governing virus assembly, you can then stop or modify the viruses.

“it’s finding the achilles’ heel of the virus, if you wish, through the lens of mathematics – finding the rules of how viruses work,” she said.

“you can find ways of breaking their assembly.” given that there may be millions or even trillions of different viruses, finding a shortcut to decode them all would be invaluable to fighting the dangerous ones.

the opportunities to use viral protein containers in nanomedicine as delivery vehicles are especially exciting.

“we can turn the tables to use viral containers to deliver therapeutic cargos,” dr. twarock said.

for example, you could use the shell of a hepatitis virus, which is efficient at entering liver cells, to fight liver cancer. you could replace the hepatitis genome inside the shell with genetic material engineered to repair liver cancer cells.

dr. twarock said that the modelling they are working on now won’t directly help against the coronavirus, which is bigger and more complex. but it could provide a rosetta stone of sorts.

“covid-19 has a very large genome, so it applies a different genome packaging strategy. but the principles are similar, so you can get insights by analogy that you would not have otherwise.”

dr. twarock originally worked in quantum physics. she switched to viruses when she saw the similarities between the two systems.

“there are some similarities with strong mathematical links, especially with regards to symmetries. then i saw that knowing about symmetries is almost like a secret weapon against viruses. you can visualize and understand mechanisms that you would not be able to see unless you use the mathematical microscope. it is so fascinating.”

mark your calendars: research & innovation week is being held march 1 - 5, 2021 – and this year it’s virtual!

the theme this year will be "our changing world".  we've all heard the catch-phrases: in these unprecedented times, we are all in this together, to try to flatten the curve, while adjusting to a new normal.

our world is changing, but living through a global pandemic has radically changed so much of our daily lives. we look to scientists, political leaders, artists, and intellectual thinkers for direction, as they work tirelessly to improve health and well-being, drive us toward social equity, and aid us in discerning fact from fiction. these are uncertain times, but as we pivot in these uncharted waters, we look to research and innovation to help us understand and appreciate this new world

although this year's research & innovation week is virtual, our researchers and guest speakers are ready to showcase research and innovation excellence and the positive impact it has on our changing world. this year's lineup of events includes:
  • opening ceremonies with keynote speaker bob macdonald, host of quirks and quarks
  • dr. pontzer's hotter and sicker climate change, human health, and the tangled evolutionary roots of our species' dependence on external energy
  • virtual 3 minute thesis competition
  • graduate student poster competition
  • undergraduate poster session
  • research showcase highlighting how research and innovation at lakehead is contributing to the achievement of the united nations sustainable development goals (sdgs)

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 organizing a tasty talk on ancient beer

photo of patrick mcgovern in egypt with the sphinx.

patrick mcgovern has travelled to egypt and other countries around the world to re-create ancient beer.

february 23, 2018 – thunder bay, on

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s carney matheson will participate in a thirst-quenching research and innovation week discussion about ancient beer at the prince arthur waterfront hotel on saturday, march 3 at 7 pm.

the talk, called ancient brews rediscovered and re-created, will be hosted by patrick mcgovern, a chemist with the university of pennsylvania museum who has travelled around the world to re-create ancient ale.

mcgovern wrote a book with the same name as the talk. he will discuss ancient beers and the evolution of brewing. the sleeping giant brewery will provide samples of ancient beers brewed following recipes determined through ancient history, archaeology and chemistry.

“there will be two beers to sample,” said matheson, an anthropology professor at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . “one is from the etruscans, a pre-roman people in italy. their golden days were around 800 bc and they collapsed in the third century bc with the roman-etruscan wars. the second is from the norse – this is a northern european beer. the earliest evidence for a brew in scandinavia is 3,500 bc, however scandinavian alcoholic drinks were made from local ingredients and thus varied enormously.”

the exact date for the second ale is difficult to ascertain, matheson said. “they used this style of drink right up until the 14th century ad.”

the paleo-brews, which may include wild fruits, honey, cereals, and botanicals, have not been sampled yet. “we don’t know what the beers will taste like,” he said. “hopefully good.”

mcgovern performs the same type of research as matheson – known as ancient residue analysis.

“i first met dr. mcgovern in 1995 when i was doing residue analysis in honduras on mayan sacrificial vessels. he provided advice on residue analysis and archaeological chemistry. dr. mcgovern has focused his research on ancient brewed beverages from all over the world and become renowned for his research.”

mcgovern will also visit 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 to examine the research on residue analysis which matheson and his 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 are becoming known for across canada. “his advice will be valuable to residue research at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ,” matheson said. “in addition some of dr. mcgovern's techniques will be discussed and added to the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 research approach.”

mcgovern’s book, ancient brews rediscovered and re-created, which offers instructions on brewing ancient beer, will be for sale and he will sign copies.

tickets are $15 – available at the sleeping giant brewery, the prince arthur waterfront hotel, the department of anthropology at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and remaining tickets will be offered at the anthropology booth at the intercity shopping centre during research and innovation week on saturday, march 3. the talk will be in the prince arthur hotel’s provincial room from 7 until 10 pm on saturday, march 3.

indigenous research institute is the focus of a discussion at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜

march 1, 2017 – thunder bay, on

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has a well-established relationship of research projects and partnerships with aboriginal communities, so is the time ripe to set up a dedicated indigenous research institute?

that is the focus of a discussion taking place march 8 during research and innovation week.

for dr. peggy smith, the answer is an unequivocal yes.

“we have numerous researchers at lakehead who are working with indigenous communities, so a research centre would be a place where people could share experiences and find people to work with. it would promote interdisciplinarity, getting researchers from different fields to work together to serve the needs of indigenous communities,” says smith, interim vice-provost (aboriginal initiatives) at lakehead.

lakehead, situated in the heart of indigenous territories, boasts almost one-in-five 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 of aboriginal ancestry. its strategic research plan commits to research that is relevant to first nation, metis and inuit peoples. to date, there are more than 30 such projects, focussing on community needs ranging from the arts to health, education, science, land management and culture.

“there’s a rich and long history at lakehead of faculty members doing research with indigenous communities,” smith says, adding this work advances knowledge about indigenous issues and helps improve conditions in these communities.

with such a track record, the next step would be an actual centre to serve the needs of faculty, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and the community at large.

“we’re still very much talking about the concept, how we would do it and what it would do,” smith explains.

the roundtable discussion features speakers who have experience in cross-cultural learning and what is needed to set up an indigenous-focused research institute.

they are:

  • dr. eldon yellowhorn of simon fraser university teaches first nations studies and archaeology. he has participated in research projects on the northern plains, as well as blackfoot mythology and folklore.
  • dr. derek jennings of the university of minnesota-duluth is community outreach director at the research for indigenous community health center. he works with indigenous communities on chronic health issues, such as obesity.
  • dr. michelle johnson-jennings, also of the university of minnesota-duluth, is founding director of the research for indigenous community health center. her specialty is cultural health beliefs and behavioural interventions regarding addiction.

johnson-jennings believes a dedicated indigenous research institute demonstrates academic commitment to indigenous communities and recognizes and values indigenous knowledge.

“indigenous community voices that are often marginalized within non-native institutes can have a space to be heard and elevated within an indigenous centre,” johnson-jennings says.

“in doing so, true partnership between academics and tribes can be formed, resources and support given for both academics and tribes to engage meaningfully, and a path forged for future work,” she says.

such a facility, to be named the gichi kendaasiwin centre (meaning “higher knowledge” in ojibwe), will not only house aboriginal programs and services, but will also engage aboriginal learners in all disciplines and will be a gathering place for the exchange of ideas from the region, across canada and around the world.

“we’re still very much in the conceptual stage,” smith says. “this is a key discussion we’re having and it’ll take us a good way along” the path to realizing the goal of having an indigenous research institute.

the roundtable discussion called should 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 establish an indigenous research institute? is set for wednesday, march 8, from 2-4 p.m., at the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 faculty lounge (uc 1029g).

nasa director speaking at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 during r and i week

photo of dr. james green

dr. james green

february 27, 2017 – thunder bay, on

when dr. james green was in high school he worked in an observatory with an alvan clark telescope, which stirred in him a passion for the final frontier – space.

“i thoroughly enjoyed looking into the sky at night and observing the beautiful planets, stars, nebulae and galaxies,” green said.

“this sparked my interest to go in to the field of space science. when i went to the university of iowa i knew from the very beginning i was going for a space science degree.”

green received his phd in 1979 and began working at nasa. when he became director of nasa’s planetary science division he couldn’t have known he’d help hollywood make a movie that took place on mars – the martian (2015) – starring matt damon, whose character mark watney desperately tries to get off the red planet and return to earth.

“working with ridley scott’s team was an absolute delight. i believe the reason i enjoyed this so much was because ridley really wanted the movie to have as realistic look and feel about mars as possible. once i understood what he wanted, then i was all in,” green said.

his free talk at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 will describe the past and future of mars and venus, discussing whether they once contained life and if they could one day harbor life.

planetary scientists have developed the capability to model how venus and mars have evolved since their birth and what may happen to them in the distant future, he said.

“it is important to note that the intensity of the sun’s light will continue to increase over time. the future for venus then is clear. it will continue to be an ultra-hot world, devoid of life as we know it.”

mars is another story. “for mars, however, as the intensity of the sun’s light increases it will continue to warm the planet until the carbon dioxide veneer over its northern polar cap sublimates, creating an enhanced greenhouse effect that will warm the planet and melt any remaining water ice—thereby producing a smaller ocean. mars may once again become a habitable planet.”

green said it is currently impossible to determine if venus had supported any kind of life in its past without a long-term visit to the surface to study the planet more intensively.

“that’s also somewhat true for mars, but perhaps mars supported at least microbial life. scientists don’t like to speculate, but because both planets appear to have had significant amounts of water oceans on their surface, many scientists believe that these are, indeed, habitable environments which could have supported some type of life in their past. all that still remains to be discovered,” he said.

for anyone who dreams of working for the national aeronautics and space administration, green said nasa offers employment in all types of roles, and an internship program provides a wonderful learning and networking opportunity for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 as well as educators.

green’s free talk, part of research and innovation week, will be on wednesday, march 8 at 7:30 pm at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 in atac 1003. it’s called the search for life beyond earth in space and time. no registration is required.

everyone is welcome to attend. refreshments will be available. the talk will also be shown via livestream here: facebook.com/lakeheaduniversity/

“university research really can help us to focus on what’s going to matter next,” says bonnie m. patterson, president and ceo of the council of ontario universities, which represents the province’s 21 publicly assisted universities. “but there is also an immediacy to university research that we hope will shine through as a result of this discussion. what does the world need to focus on at this moment? what should our global priorities be to improve lives?”

participants are asked to register online at http://yourontarioresearch.ca/events/what-matters-now/register/. those who can’t attend can watch a live stream online at http://yourontarioresearch.ca/events/wht-matters-now/live-webcast/

researchers will also answer questions from the audience and via social media.

the public will learn that night who won the grand prizes in the 2014 virtual scavenger hunt, which include several $500 cash prizes for ontario university 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

hundreds of online sleuths have been taking part in the virtual scavenger hunt, which put the spotlight on key research conducted at universities across ontario. throughout the month of february, scavengers received 21 online video clues by email. each clue prompted them to search online to discover research treasure.

researchers participating in the what matters now event are:

  • margaret (peggy) smith, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 : what is the way forward for aboriginal peoples and natural resources?
  • maria derosa, carleton university: can nanotechnology help feed the world?

  • kate hartman, ocad university: what kind of microprocessor are you wearing?
  • ross mckitrick, university of guelph: can economic growth and environmental protection go hand in hand?

research matters travels next to toronto on april 9 and wraps up in kingston on may 21. the series kicked off in hamilton on nov. 4, and stopped in london, ont. on nov. 26.

university researchers are improving the health, happiness and richness of life for people around the world. their work crosses all disciplines and not only changes lives, but is essential to helping government, businesses and communities make informed decisions.

award-winning author joseph boyden speaking at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜

february 26, 2014 – thunder bay, on

as part of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s research and innovation week, award-winning author joseph boyden will discuss what he learned about race relations before canada’s confederation; knowledge he gained while researching his 2013 bestselling novel the orenda.

boyden will give a free talk at 7 pm on wednesday, march 5 at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 in uc 1017. his talk is called the past and the future are present: race relations in canada.

“the old cliché is that to know where you’re going you have to know where you came from,” boyden said. “many people believe everything started in canada in 1867 with john a. macdonald but there were forces at work before that.”

when the europeans first arrived on turtle island, they brought with them their ways, their traditions and their customs.

determined to ‘civilise’ those who already inhabited the land, the europeans did not recognize nor appreciate that the original peoples of this land were already living a rich life with fully developed and sophisticated systems of governance, customs, traditions, and knowledge.

“many canadians don’t know our own history. in order to understand what first nations issues are – and they are some of the most pressing environmental, social and political issues – we need to think about how we treat the fastest growing segment of our population, and this relates to the orenda,” boyden said.

“we must look at our roots to understand how the tree grows,” boyden said, adding this will be the first time he has come to thunder bay.

boyden has written three novels, a short story collection and a non-fiction book. his first novel, three day road, was awarded the rogers writers’ trust of fiction prize. his follow-up, through black spruce, won the prestigious scotiabank giller prize; both novels are national and international bestsellers. his most recent novel, the orenda, has been drawing critical acclaim and is a national #1 bestseller.

“joseph boyden’s talk will be of interest to anyone who is studying or passionate about history or race relations in canada,” said dr. umed panu, associate vice-president (research, economic development and innovation).

“this will be a popular evening that will fill up fast. anyone who wants to attend this talk should arrive early,” dr. panu added.

boyden will sign books after the talk. refreshments will be served. this event is sponsored by 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s faculty of social sciences and humanities, the office of research services, the department of political science, the office of aboriginal initiatives, and the department of english.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s research and innovation week runs from march 1-7. for more information, please visit www.hsbcwebinars.com/ri.
