welcome to your department

for those just beginning your degree, it is with great pleasure that i am writing to welcome you to your department! while some technical issues may have delayed the release of our fall e-newsletter, i have had the pleasure of meeting many of you so far this term. as you have now discovered, for over 50 years your department has been teaching 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 about the past and ways of learning about the past.  for returning 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , alumni, faculty, and community partners welcome back and i hope your term has so far been fruitful. all of you continue to demonstrate that our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and alumni are some of the most versatile and sought after graduates.

don't believe me? have a look at our new career options section of the department's website to read report after report on the value of your degree. what you will learn is that history has been the most common undergraduate degree held by forbes 500 ceos and history graduates feature disproportionately often on the boards of britain's top 100 companies. not interested in business? perhaps you might like to know that history graduates have been one of the most sought after in the tech industry, or that we disproportionately are found in government public service and legal professions.

history is not a static discipline and your department has been working hard to ensure the education you receive prepares you for whatever career you are seeking. over the summer we have continued to add more applied options, such as our new public history and community placement courses, and continued to expand options for those seeking to become teachers with the introduction of a new concurrent honours bachelor of arts / bachelor of education in history and french and the intermediate/senior level. additional new program options also include an honours bachelor of arts in french and history and, working with the faculty of business, we have developed a pathway for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to combine their honours bachelor of arts and bachelor of arts degrees in history with certificates in entrepreneurship and business information technology management.

congratulations to alumni and community partners

during 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 's 50th anniversary celebrations and homecoming in thunder bay, the department celebrated its birthday with an open house and our annual alumni and community partnership award reception.  alumni honour awards this year were presented to carlana bartlett lindeman (ba 1972, hba 1973, bed 1975, med 1979) and john potestio (hba 1970, ma 1981). community partnership awards were presented to jesse roberts (individual) and the thunder bay public library (organization).

faculty changes
you will also notice some changes in the department's faculty. last spring we were pleased to hire a tenure-track specialist in eastern european history, dr. steven jobbitt. dr. ronald harpelle is on sabbatical this year and dr. pallavi das has begun a 3-year term as graduate coordinator. we welcome dr. nicolas lepine (phd universite laval)  who will be teaching courses in latin american history and a fourth year course on the spanish civil war. dr. lepine joins the following contract lecturers who are returning: dr. ernie epp, dr. c. nathan hatton, prof. catherine hudson, prof. sara janes, prof. rafaela jobbitt, dr. taisto kaipio, prof. kelly saxberg, prof. beverly soloway, prof. david ratz, and dr. thorold tronrud.

new initiatives
in addition to continuing our successful peer mentorship program, the department has established in partnership with the thunder bay public library a free drop-in writing clinic for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and the general public who would like some extra help perfecting their writing and research skills. our last clinic of the term will be held on 24 november between 1 pm and 5 pm at the brodie resource library. don't worry, though, it will be back next term.

finally, i encourage all of you - alumni, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , friends - to come out to our events or just stop by the third floor of the ryan building to say hello.

michel s. beaulieu, phd
chair and associate professor
