edi in research award guidelines

we are pleased to announce the inaugural equity, diversity and inclusion (edi) in research award. this award recognizes outstanding research projects that have promoted edi principles and activities in the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 research community by a faculty member and their research team.  the edi in research award is valued at $1,000 and includes a framed certificate to be presented during research and innovation week.

 

applicant eligibility

applications must be submitted by the lead applicant. faculty members and their research teams from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s campuses are eligible to apply. all 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 tenured and tenure-track faculty members and three-year limited term appointments (ltas) are eligible to apply. a faculty member (lead applicant) may receive only one award every three years. the research team may include faculty member(s), student(s), post-doctoral fellow(s), community partner(s), librarian(s), research staff, etc. the lead faculty member must list each of the research team members within the application.

please note, it is not a requirement of this award to belong to an equity-deserving group (women, indigenous peoples, racialized minorities, persons with disabilities and members of lgbtq2+ communities).  this award recognizes initiatives advancing edi strategies through a research project. 

application and deadline

applications must be completed and submitted in the romeo research portal, and require care and attention on the part of the applicant to ensure that applications are complete. 

all research teams must identify one faculty member to be the lead applicant. applicants must submit electronic application packages through the romeo research portal prior to 11:59 p.m. on january 10 each year. should the deadline fall over a weekend, applications will be due the following business day.

the award will be announced at the awards reception during research and innovation week in thunder bay. the winner and their team are encouraged to attend and receive the award in person. awards received by orillia research teams will be presented at the opening ceremonies during their research and innovation week. 

application requirements & supporting documentation

the following requirements must be submitted by the applicant through the romeo research portal: 

  1. demonstration of edi within a research project to meet the award criteria (maximum length three pages single-spaced).

teams must demonstrate how they have advanced equity, diversity and inclusion strategies through a research project. this description should outline multiple ways in which the team has embraced edi within their research environment.  as applicants are addressing each of the award criteria, please ensure examples are provided and evidence is used to support their answers.

applicants should address the following criteria in their application. 

  • criteria 1) demonstrated positive impact on equity deserving groups and community partners (50% weighting)

select at least two of the following to address the criteria:

  • how has the research approach followed edi best practices and involved those who may have been historically underrepresented in the research process? how has this been accomplished? 

  • how has participating in the research project had a positive effect on the research environment for those involved with the project, including hqp, community partner(s), etc?  what has the impact been of your research project/ edi efforts?

  • how have the applicant and the research team impacted the research community through their edi-related efforts?

  • how has the applicant ensured that the hiring process for their team follows edi best practices? how has the research team received proper edi training? provide examples and evidence of such training.

  • has the team embraced edi best practices? 

    • for example: does the project involve the mentoring of early career researchers, community researchers, collaborators, or hqp through an edi lens?  

    • please note: do not tokenize any team members or yourself. tokenism will result in lower scores in this section.


  • criteria 2) edi in the research design (50% weighting)

select at least one of the following to address the criteria:

  • to what degree has edi been involved in (any of the following): 

    • the generation of the research question, 

    • project design/development of methodology, 

    • data analysis/interpretation of results, and/or 

    • implementation/dissemination of results,

    • knowledge mobilization, translation and transfer activities.

  • how have hqp, equity-deserving groups, partner organizations, etc., been involved in the project's decision-making processes? has there been collaboration amongst all groups? 

  • has the research been designed to ensure edi best practices are followed (for example, collecting only necessary data about identity, ensuring study populations are as inclusive as possible, etc)? 

  1. research project summary.

please provide a short summary of the research project using non-specialist language (limit to 200 words).

  1. a maximum of two letters of support. 

  • these letters may be from faculty peers, which may include a chair, director, dean, peers external to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 (such as community partners), student trainees, or research collaborators. letters must speak to the inclusive excellence and/or edi impact of the work that the faculty member has implemented within their research team. 

  • applicants whose research activity involves community-engaged research must include at least one letter of support from community partners or collaborators as part of the required two letters of support. 

 

  1. any additional evidence of impact (optional).

if the lead faculty member wishes, they may submit additional documents or evidence of the impact that the project has had with respect to edi and in support of their application.
