joint programming initiative on antimicrobial resistance – call on diagnostics and surveillance 2019

how to apply:

antimicrobial resistance (amr) has become one of the major global health and development challenges of the 21st century. the threat of amr is particularly high in resource-limited and high-risk settings. this is linked to weak human and animal health systems; diverse means of food production, processing and consumption; food safety and food security; water, hygiene and sanitation challenges; and the global movement of people and goods.

in response to these challenges, the jpiamr is launching a joint transnational call for proposals for innovative research projects on new or improved diagnostics and surveillance strategies, tools, technologies and methods. these research projects should address diagnosis of amr infections in clinical and veterinary settings, or the emergence, surveillance, and/or detection of amr in humans, animals and the environment. this call will support research projects that also have the potential for impact in areas where the risk and burden of amr is greatest, e.g. in lmic settings in asia and africa. projects are encouraged to use a one health approach where relevant.

cihr is investing $1.8 million in this joint programming call. the overall projected call budget is of approx. 20 million euro.

new frontiers in research fund – exploration

how to apply:

context

the new frontiers in research fund (nfrf) will invest $275 million over the next five years, and $65 million ongoing, to support international, interdisciplinary, fast-breaking and high-risk research. it is comprised of three streams to support groundbreaking research:

  • exploration will generate opportunities for canada to build strength in high-risk, high-reward and interdisciplinary research;
  • transformation will provide large-scale support for canada to build strength and leadership in interdisciplinary and transformative research; and
  • international will enhance opportunities for canadian researchers to participate in research with international partners.

the canada research coordinating committee (crcc) designed the fund following a comprehensive national consultation, which involved canadian researchers, research administrators, stakeholders and the public. the fund is administered by the tri-agency institutional programs secretariat (tips), which is housed within the social sciences and humanities research council (sshrc), on behalf of canada’s three research granting agencies:  the canadian institutes of health research (cihr), the natural sciences and engineering research council (nserc) and sshrc.

description

the objective of this inaugural competition is to generate opportunities for early career researchers (ecrs) to conduct high-risk, high-reward and interdisciplinary research not available through funding opportunities currently offered by the three agencies. it seeks to inspire highly innovative projects that defy current research paradigms, propose a unique scientific direction, bring disciplines together beyond the traditional disciplinary approaches, and/or use different perspectives to solve existing problems.

eligibility

for this competition, early career researchers  are defined as individuals who have five years or less experience since their first academic appointment as of the noi deadline, with the exception of career interruptions (e.g., maternity or parental leave, extended sick leave, clinical training, and family care) that occurred after their appointment. part-time positions are also taken into consideration. for maternity or parental leave, the five-year window is extended by an amount equal to twice the time interruption taken. in the case of a first academic appointment having been a part-time appointment/position, tips will count the years of experience following it at 50% until the time of an appointment to a full-time academic position. additional details are available in the frequently asked questions.

applications may be submitted by an individual researcher (the nominated principal investigator) or a team of researchers. in addition to the nominated principal investigator, a team may include one co-principal investigator, and any number of co-applicants, and/or collaborators.

individuals can participate in only one application as a nominated principal investigator, co-principal investigator, or co-applicant in this competition. furthermore, for future exploration competitions, individuals cannot participate as a nominated principal investigator, co-principal investigator or co-applicant on a proposal if they are already a grantee or co-grantee of an exploration award. this restriction does not apply to collaborators.

genomic applications partnership program (gapp)

how to apply:

the genomic applications partnership program (gapp) funds downstream research and development (r&d) projects that address real world opportunities and challenges defined by “receptor” organizations such as industry, government, or not-for-profit entities. these organizations should be committed to commercializing or implementing the outcomes of the project.

projects are led by the receptor organization (canadian or international) but are active collaborations with a canadian academic researcher. these projects are co-funded by receptors and other stakeholders and must have the potential to generate significant social and/or economic benefits for canada.

the gapp aims to:

  • accelerate the application of canadian genomics-derived solutions from academia to real-world opportunities and challenges defined by industry, not-for-profit and public-sector receptors.
  • channel canada’s genomics capacity into sustainable innovations that benefit canadians.
  • enhance the value of canadian genomics technologies by de-risking and incentivizing follow-on investment from industry and other partners.
  • foster mutually beneficial collaboration and knowledge exchange between canadian academia and technology receptors.
