kids brain health network  is currently in its 8th year of a possible 15 years of funding, extending to 2025. we are soliciting proposals for funds we will invest in three different project types in years 9 and 10. our intention is to create the foundation for impact teams that will become the core of our strategy through to the end of our nce lifecycle and beyond.

areas of emphasis

• early diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disability
• effective treatment
• evidence-based, cost-efficient support for child and family

eligible projects will emphasize innovation, a national scope, and possess a high degree of potential for cross-disciplinary networking, as well as synergy with past kids brain health efforts. investigators are strongly encouraged to address issues that are most relevant to children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, and their parent and caregivers.

background and description of opportunity
the canadian glycomics network (glyconet) is a network of centres of excellence that focuses on the role of glycans (carbohydrates) in health. areas of focus are therapeutic proteins & vaccines, antimicrobials and chronic disease, in particular diabetes & obesity, genetic diseases involving errors in glycan metabolism, and cancer. ad-ditional information about network research can be found at www.glyconet.ca.
a key goal of glyconet is the translation of research advances into novel products for treating disease. accordingly this request for proposals seeks to fund more mature projects needing network support to de-risk and advance them to a state at which translation is possible.

requirements
projects should:
• be aligned with one of the glyconet research themes (see glyconet.ca).
• be multidisciplinary and involve at least two research groups.
• must have an articulated ip and patentability strategy.
• be accompanied by a commercialisation plan provided by the technology transfer office of the project leader’s institution.
• have a clear endpoint, successful completion of which would attract a potential partner.
• ability to demonstrate partner support is preferred.

funding available
glyconet has set aside up to $600,000 for this competition. proposals may request up to $200,000 in funding. it is anticipated that projects will be completed within 12 months; justification should be provided for longer funding periods. continued funding for projects past the 12-month period will be considered on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the commercialization committee.

eligibility
this opportunity is open only to individuals eligible to hold tri-council funds; i.e., the canadian institutes of health research (cihr), the natural sciences and engineering research council of canada (nserc) or the social sci-ences and humanities research council of canada (sshrc).

an individual may serve as the project leader on only one translational funding application and may not be in-volved in more than two translational funding applications. simultaneous application for phase i and phase ii funding for the same project is not allowed.

what is the program?

the nrc is excited to announce a new initiative to bring up to ten postdoctoral fellows (pdfs) to work alongside our internationally recognized research leaders. the program will offer pdfs access to unique world-class facilities and the opportunity to work alongside multi-disciplinary teams of expert researchers and technicians on projects of critical importance to canada. pdfs will carry out research on innovative research projects, with opportunities for career development (publications and/or industry interaction).

pdfs will be offered appointments to the staff of the national research council on a term basis and will be offered salaries and benefits currently available to research officers. salaries commensurate with experience are taxable and subject to other deductions. as a guide, the current annual phd recruiting rate is $64,437. in addition pdfs will be allocated a travel fund to support their work.

who is eligible?

• fellowships will be for two years contingent on satisfactory progress achieved during the first year.
• candidates should have obtained a phd (or equivalent) within the past three years (phd received on or after july 1, 2014) or expect to complete their phd by september, 2017. to be eligible, a candidate will be required to submit their cv, three publications, a statement of interest for each project to which they wish to apply, and send the names of three references with contact information.
• fellows will work in a lab under the direct supervision of an nrc researcher.

the specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to: 

• support impact-oriented career paths and elevate the career readiness of individuals with a phd in hspr or related fields by supporting experiential learning opportunities in canada outside of the traditional scholarly environment, enriched competency development (e.g., leadership, project management), and national cohort participation;
• expand and enrich the traditional post-doctoral training environment by engaging health system and related organizations in preparing a cadre of promising phd graduates for successful careers;

under this call, your project proposal must contribute to the achievement of this ultimate outcome:

• ultimate outcome: increased economic empowerment for women and youth, especially from indigenous communities, in alta verapaz, chimaltenango and sololá departments.

your project proposal must also contribute to the achievement of two or three intermediate outcomes, including at least one of the following intermediate outcomes:

• intermediate outcome 1: strengthened innovative, clean and sustainable business practices in small-scale enterprises, especially those headed by women and youth, from indigenous communities in particular.
• intermediate outcome 2: increased decent job opportunities for women and youth, especially from indigenous communities.

you must not alter the ultimate outcome statement or the selected intermediate outcome statement.

if your proposal is selected, global affairs canada will ask you to include an indicator linked to the united nations sustainable development goals in the performance measurement framework, to be completed when designing the project implementation plan. global affairs canada will work in collaboration with organizations whose proposals have been selected to define this indicator, which will be used to measure the achievement of the final outcome.

proposals must also meet gender equality and green economic growth objectives.

gender equality: priority will be given to proposals that fully integrate gender equality issues in their design. this means that gender equality issues raised in the gender comparative analysis will be integrated in the theory of change and are addressed specifically through concrete activities, resources, outcomes and indicators.

proposals must also clearly indicate how:

• women and girls have been consulted during the project design;
• the needs voiced and suggestions made by women and girls in these consultations have influenced decisions on the project orientation and design; and,
• women and girls will be involved in the activities implementation and monitoring, as well as in the project assessment.

green economic growth and climate change: this call for proposals seeks to foster green economic growth by promoting sustainable environmental practices, such as the responsible use of natural resources, protection of ecosystems, promotion of low-carbon-emission economic activities, efficient use of energy, use of clean and/or renewable energy sources, management of waste and effluent, smart farming practices adapted to the climate, sustainable water and soil management, and strengthening communities’ capacities for resilience in adapting to climate change. these examples are provided solely as an illustration; proposals may include other sustainable practices that also meet the challenges linked to green economic growth. proposed projects must also present an analysis of the potential impact of climate change on the populations and areas targeted by the project and, where applicable, propose measures to reinforce capacity for adaptation.

seeking early-career researchers with big ideas focused on the prevention and treatment of mental illness

the royal’s institute of mental health research (imhr), affiliated with the university of ottawa, has launched a new research incubator called emerging research innovators in mental health (e-rihm^h) - the first of its kind in canada focusing solely on mental health research.

we are seeking the world's best and brightest early-career researchers ready to put their careers into overdrive. applicants are encouraged to propose highly original projects that explore out-of-the-box ideas and hold the potential to transform current thinking in mental health research.   the successful candidates will get a chance to put their careers into overdrive through salary support, research grant support, mentorship, and real world opportunity for up to five years.

to be eligible, applicants must:

• be within the first seven years of completion of a md and/or phd degree;
• be engaged in research that complements and contributes to mental health discovery and the strategic priorities of imhr;
• demonstrate an excellent level of research achievement and promise of future impact in mental health research, as evidenced by proposed research, quality of publications, awards received, and statements by referees;
• demonstrate a track record of, or interest in, engaging across disciplines, as well as with sectors beyond academia to enrich and extend the impact of their research;
