targeted call program for patient-oriented-research on health system integration and performance – health system research fund

how to apply:

currently open: 2018/19 targeted call program for patient-oriented research on health system integration and performance (porhsip) - prospective evaluation research notice of intent and full application submissions
launch date: march 29, 2018
notice of intent deadline: april 26, 2018
full application deadline: june 4, 2018

overview

the purpose of the hsrf targeted calls is to solicit and fund focused research applications within mohltc priority areas. the two new calls focus on patient-oriented research in mental health and addictions and patient-oriented research on health system integration and performance.

for the targeted call for patient-oriented research in mental health and addictions:
for each of the priority areas, key knowledge gaps related to current/anticipated policy development and program development were identified as targeted research areas of interest for policy makers and knowledge users through a consultative process. refer to the full application for definitions of targeted research priority areas and sub-priority areas.

for the targeted call program for patient-oriented research on health system integration and performance (porhsip) - prospective evaluation research:
refer to the full application for definitions of targeted research sub-priority areas.

applicants will be assessed on the extent to which sex and gender have been considered in their proposed research (i.e., rationale, methods and knowledge translation and exchange (kte) plan). additionally, applicants will be assessed on the extent to which patients have been meaningfully engaged in the proposed research.

five additional cross-cutting components have also been identified for hsrf awards (excluding the targeted call program for porhsip). applicants are encouraged to incorporate any/all of these components into their projects where applicable and/or feasible. these cross-cutting components are:

  • equity
  • indigenous health
  • patient-centred care
  • implementation science
  • modernizing patient-centred care through digital health

refer to the hsrf guidelines for definitions and selected examples of government initiatives and commitments related to each cross-cutting component.

for the hsrf targeted call program for porhsip, the project includes consideration of health equity (populations in the heia and supplements), indigenous, french language lenses as well as sex (biologic) and gender (social) analysis.

patients first: action plan for healthcare outlines the ministry's commitment to expand how patients are engaged throughout the health care system. to meet this commitment, the ministry is also expanding the patient engagement component of all hsrf calls. all research funded through the hsrf must include meaningful patient engagement to ensure the patient's perspective is considered in all aspects of a research project.

call for proposals

how to apply:

the adopting research to improve care (artic) program is a proven model for accelerating the implementation of research evidence into broader practice, contributing to improving the quality of care across ontario. it is a continuing partnership co-led by health quality ontario (hqo) and the council of academic hospitals of ontario (caho) and brought to life through the program’s engagement with a wide array of system partners.

overview

each year, the artic program selects one or more projects to receive the funding and supports that the program provides. the projects that are selected will use all components of the established artic model to support the implementation of clinical interventions or practice changes at multiple sites (“spread partners”) across the province.

theme for 2018 call

the overarching theme for the 2018 call is adopting hqo quality standards, specifically in the following areas of need
o behavioral symptoms of dementia
o schizophrenia care for adults in hospitals
o major depression
o heavy menstrual bleeding
o hip fracture
o wound care (diabetic foot ulcers)
o wound care (venous leg ulcers)

team grant : era-net permed

how to apply:

the overall aim of the call is to fund projects showing clinical feasibility of pm in complex diseases (including multifactorial, monogenic and other diseases). by feasibility is meant the demonstration of significant and clinically relevant improvement of current diagnostics and/or therapeutics, based on improved understanding of underlying molecular mechanisms. applicants are expected to combine pre-clinical and/or clinical research with bio-informatics components to enable data quality on one side and the potential applicability for health care providers on the other side.

this should be based on methods that are possible to use in and/or be further developed for clinical, general practice and public health settings. this may involve validation of known biomarkers, interoperable data solutions and software for decision support for healthcare providers. integration of other sources of clinically relevant data in the clinical decision support, such as imaging or routine data, could also be considered to improve the diagnostic predictions. the projects could include exploratory clinical studies that demonstrate the feasibility of early diagnosis and/or stratification of patients for existing drugs. larger clinical trials, for example for the identification of novel drugs, are beyond the scope of the call. because understanding of molecular mechanisms in complex/multifactorial diseases but also other diseases (such as monogenic, rare diseases and cancer) involves multiple genes, gene products or regulators, it is likely that omics methods are required, as are in vitro or in vivo validation studies.

the era permed call is expected:

  • to support translational research projects in the field of personalized medicine;
  • to encourage and enable interdisciplinarity, in combining pre-clinical and/or clinical research with computational components.
