the association of universities and colleges of canada (aucc) is pleased to announce the launch of the 2013 competition of the canada-africa research exchange grants (careg) program. this program is managed by aucc and funded by the international development research centre (idrc).

the careg program supports short-term exchanges between canadian and african universities and research institutes that address idrc’s program areas. it is expected that 10-11 grants of up to $40,000 each will be awarded through the 2013 competition.

to be eligible for a grant, canadian and african researchers must be regular full-time university faculty members or full-time researchers at a recognized research institute.

the clean transportation initiative is developed in response to the government of canada’s commitment to reduce transport related emissions through:

• regulations;
• support the adoption of clean technologies and practices; and
• engage in research technologies and practices.   

the scope of this initiative is to initiate scientific research that will improve understanding of the technical aspects of reducing emissions within the aviation, marine and rail sectors.  the research will also help to identify, demonstrate, and bring to market new emission reduction operational procedures and technologies.

the objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

• describe the state of knowledge about the future skills needs of the canadian labour market, in the context of slowing labour-force growth, increasingly globalized labour markets and economies, and continual technological change;
• identify gaps between labour market demand for both generic and specific skills and the supply of skills (e.g., through k-12 education, postsecondary education, skilled trades and apprenticeship, employer-training and immigration-oriented programs);
• identify the most promising policies and practices for better identifying and meeting future skills needs;
• assess the quality, accuracy and rigour of current work in the field;
• identify gaps in the knowledge and the quantitative and qualitative data available related to skills development and future needs of the canadian labour market;
• mobilize skills and labour market knowledge within the academic, industry and public policy sectors; and
• form the basis of dialogue between academic researchers, industry stakeholders and skills-related policy-makers in government.

knowledge synthesis grants are not intended to support original research. they are intended to support the synthesis of existing research knowledge and the identification of knowledge gaps in a format accessible to a particular audience—in this case, primarily government policy-makers, but also education and training institutions, and employers.

the purpose of the fund is to facilitate the publication of high quality work. this fund applies to peer-reviewed journal articles and books.

this is a competitive award with a maximum value of $500 per application. costs that may be covered include, publication subsidies to the publisher or journal, translations, the production of an index for a book, cover design, and other hard costs associated with publication.

applications to the fiscal year 2013 (fy13) psychological health and traumatic brain injury (ph/tbi) research program are being solicited for the assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, defense health program (dhp), by the u.s. army medical research acquisitions activity (usamraa). the ph/tbi research program was initiated in 2007 for the purpose of complementing ongoing department of defense (dod) efforts towards promoting a better standard of care for ph (including post-traumatic stress disorder [ptsd]) and tbi in the areas of prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. this includes research to benefit service members, family members, veterans, and other beneficiaries of the military health system (mhs).

the canadian water network (cwn) is currently calling for proposals for research within its canadian municipal water consortium (cmwc) to support decision makers and practitioners by assessing the efficacy of a suite of tools focused on identifying indications of endocrine impacts on aquatic organisms in the immediate vicinity of wastewater treatment plant outfalls as a sensitive screening approach to provide:

1) clear indications that biological effects are occurring as a result of the presence of emerging contaminants (trace organic contaminants)  in municipal wastewater effluent discharges, and

2) a practical basis for distinguishing the relative level of concern between sites for effects of emerging contaminants, in order to identify sites where additional work should be done.

this project will focus on testing a suite of tools at municipal wastewater impacted sites. the outcome of this research will be an evaluation of the ability of the suite of tools to identify the relative concern for the impact of emerging contaminants (principally trace organic contaminants) in wastewater effluents on aquatic biota. in doing so, it will build on previous research and is intended to further the larger overall goal of assessing impacts of emerging contaminants on aquatic biota and to identify sites where interventions should be considered.  the goal of this particular research call is to assess an approach, focused on an endocrine disruption pathway, for identifying impacts of emerging contaminants.  the successful project will use this approach to assess a practical suite of tools and methods that can be more broadly applied at sites to identify and prioritize sites that warrant further study.
