the trials will provide bfn and its stakeholders with data on potential sources of biomass available for use as feedstocks in either biological or thermo-chemical conversion processes. the ultimate goal will be for bfn to identify the optimal combination of feedstock and conversion technologies for the production of liquid biofuels. properties to be monitored and reported upon include:

• details of land/soil quality, preparation and harvest
• irrigation rates and moisture content of biomass
• rates of growth, yields, residues, removal rates (dry tonnes per hectare)
• cost and/or value ($ per dry tonne) in local markets
• quantities and cost of inputs (water, fertilizer, herbicides/pesticides/fungicides, fuel, etc.)
• post-harvest logistics
• other properties, to be determined on a per-project basis

successful projects will work closely with bfn’s social, economic, and environmental sustainability (sees) theme to provide trial data to perform in-depth lifecycle and economic analysis.

the trial will involve establishing agriculture and agro-forestry plots and monitoring their progress in three of the following canadian climate zones, selected to enable a pan-national perspective:

1.      south british columbia mountains

2.       northwestern forest

3.      prairies

4.      northeastern forest

5.      great lakes and st. laurence

6.      atlantic canada

the alzheimer society research program (asrp) provides grants and awards to applicants based in canadian universities and affiliated institutions; that promise new insights into causes, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of alzheimer’s disease and other dementias (adod).

the asrp focuses on two research streams:

i. biomedical: research into basic biological mechanisms related to brain changes associated with the disease and into the identification of therapeutic agents to combat the disease

ii. quality of life (qol): research into aspects of dementia care, support and means to improve the way care is experienced by people with dementia living in long term care homes, and their families.

every year, an independent jury of eminent researchers and intellectuals selects up to five candidates for trudeau fellowships. these candidates hail from all disciplines in the social sciences, the humanities, and the creative arts, and are active in one or more the foundation’s four themes of research. fellows are chosen in light of their leadership qualities, their productivity, their reputation, and above all their track record at imagining and promoting new solutions to major contemporary issues.

since 2009, the foundation has reserved one fellowship each year for a visiting fellow. the visiting fellowship gives canadian universities the opportunity to host a foreign or canadian academic, artist, or writer for one year or more. in odd years, the foundation awards its visiting fellowship to an international candidate. in even years, the visiting fellow is canadian. in 2014, the trudeau foundation will award a visiting fellowship to a national candidate.

eligibility criteria

• trudeau fellows are public intellectuals who have demonstrated the capacity to propose creative solutions to important issues. they reach beyond disciplinary boundaries to come up with innovative ideas and they are deeply committed to engaging in public debate.
• candidates must be nominated by a canadian university or other entity whom the foundation has invited to submit a nomination.
• candidates must be active in the social sciences and humanities and must work in an area related to one or more of the foundation’s four themes.
• candidates must commit to contributing the equivalent of at least one day a week for an academic term to the foundation’s intellectual leadership. these 15 days of engagement take place during the fellow’s first three years as a fellow. for more information, consult the engagement and residency policy for regular trudeau fellows.

the northern research fund (nrf)  provides opportunities for research in the sciences, social sciences and humanities with emphasis on northern issues. the goal of this program is to enhance field research by professionals working out of the churchill northern studies centre (cnsc).  the application deadline is november 18, 2013.
