the fy18 defense appropriation provides $30 million (m) to the department of defense spinal cord injury research program (scirp) to support innovative, high-impact spinal cord injury research. as directed by the office of the assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, the defense health agency, j9 research and development directorate manages the defense health program (dhp) research, development, test, and evaluation (rdt&e) appropriation. the managing agent for the anticipated program announcements/funding opportunities is the congressionally directed medical research programs (cdmrp) at the u.s. army medical research and materiel command (usamrmc).

what is this prize?

the killam prizes are awarded to active canadian scholars who have made a substantial and significant contribution to their respective fields in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences or engineering.

up to five prizes of $100,000 each (one prize per discipline)

how to qualify

nominations must be submitted to the council by an expert in the same field as the nominee.

a peer assessment committee will select the recipients from among all nominees.

sshrc, in conjunction with immigration, refugees and citizenship canada (ircc), is launching a funding opportunity to support canadian engagement with european research partners.

this builds on a session on existing and potential research collaboration between canadian and european experts that was cohosted by sshrc and the european union (eu) at the 2018 national metropolis conference.

horizon 2020 (h2020) is the eu’s largest research funding platform to date. in october 2017, the eu released the platform’s final work program for 2018-20 that comprises calls for research worth €30 billion.

the platform includes an ambitious plan for international research collaboration on migration issues, with up to €71 million in budget years 2018 and 2019 for topics ranging from the international protection of refugees to the integration of migrant children.

sshrc encourages interested canadian researchers to work directly with research teams from eu member states on the theme of migration within horizon 2020 societal challenge 6: europe in a changing world— inclusive, innovative and reflective societies. sshrc and ircc will make one- to three-year awards valued at $75,000 to $200,000 available to researchers affiliated with an eligible canadian institution on successful h2020 research teams.

researchers based in quebec may receive additional support of $50,000 from the fonds de recherche du québec - société et culture (fqrsc) program: soutien à des initiatives internationales de recherche et d'innovation (siiri) - psr (volet 4).

the eu is responsible for the merit review of the full consortium proposals and funding recommendations. to fund activities by canadians within the consortiums, sshrc will require submission of a reduced set of application materials from canadian participants demonstrating institutional, participant and subject matter eligibility for sshrc funding, brief project descriptions and a budget for canadian activities.

detailed instructions about the sshrc application for canadian researchers will be available in early summer 2018.

sshrc will co-fund the following four subthemes for 2018-19:

the discovery grants program assists in:

• promoting and maintaining a diversified base of high-quality research capability in the natural sciences and engineering in canadian universities;
• fostering research excellence; and
• providing a stimulating environment for research training.

the specific objectives of the team grant: pathways implementation research team component 3 funding opportunity are to:

• increase the equitable reach, access and sustainability of culturally appropriate population health interventions using an implementation science approach
• develop and share recommendations, guidelines and policies for sustainability and enhanced equitable reach and access of interventions that incorporate reciprocal learning between participating indigenous communities and research teams
• build capacity for implementation research in indigenous communities by training and mentoring junior researchers through partnerships with communities, including 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and trainees with indigenous living experience, and community members

the team grant: hiv/aids biomedical clinical research funding opportunity is expected to contribute to the global search for a safe and effective cure for hiv, and to develop prevention strategies and tools.

the specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

• transform hiv biomedical and clinical research in canada into a collaborative, interdisciplinary model of knowledge creation and application through the funding of innovative research programs;
• create an inclusive and sustainable pipeline of hiv research capacity from across disciplines, sectors, and perspectives (e.g., hiv basic scientists, clinical investigators, knowledge users and/or community members [people living with hiv]);
• effectively translate knowledge into clinical and/or commercial applications which contribute to the design, development and evaluation of research strategies; and
• create a critical mass of technical and scientific expertise in canada that engages meaningfully with one another and with relevant national stakeholders, and participates in international research efforts.
