how to apply: 

grand challenges canada (gcc) announces the round 7 stars in global health – request for proposals. this program enables innovators in developing countries, as well as in canada, to develop bold ideas to improve global health conditions. 

the government of canada funds gcc through the development innovation fund, administered by idrc.

in this round of requests for proposals, gcc seeks bold ideas aligned with innovative social entrepreneurial approaches that could be easily implemented in developing countries to save and improve lives. these ideas could come from non-profit or for-profit organizations, as well as other recognized institutions.

the ideas may encompass development/deployment of products and/or services in any spectrum of global health, including drug discovery, vaccine development, diagnostics, health and medical education, maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases (including cancer and mental health), health-related water and sanitation, and health-related agriculture and nutrition.

how to apply: 

to further accelerate the growth of the next generation of technology companies, ontario centres of excellence (oce) and extreme startups, canada’s premier early-stage technology accelerator, have partnered to jointly deliver business advisory services, education and seed financing to qualified smartstart program start-ups and entrepreneurs.

the partnership between oce and extreme startups provides start-ups with access to financial and business support services, including mentoring, education, training, advisory services and seed financing. oce manages the program which aims to improve the business and management skills of recent graduates and graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (stem) fields.  these next-generation entrepreneurs are taking the next step out of publicly funded academic institutions and research hospitals and the smartstart program is there to facilitate entrepreneurship training and development.

2014 summer research fellowship

how to apply: 

the ontario genomics institute (ogi) summer research fellowships in genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics or related ethics and policy research are available to undergraduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 again in 2014.  the deadline for applications is march 3, 2014.

ogi summer research fellowships offer undergraduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 studying at ontario universities unique opportunities to engage in meaningful, real-life research in the areas of genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics or related ethical, economic, environmental, legal or social issues (“ge3ls”).  under the direction of a supervisor in academia or industry*, fellows will conduct research in one of these areas in a laboratory or other appropriate academic or industrial setting. *ogi will provide assistance with finding a supervisor for anyone interested in applying for an industrial.

these fellowships not only provide 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 with the opportunity to gain research experience, but also include a mandatory orientation session at ogi, participation in biweekly information sessions via web conferencing, and an opportunity to present their summers’ work by way of powerpoint and poster presentations to their supervisors, ogi staff and special guests at a final meeting in august 2014.

the value of the 2014 summer research fellowship is $5,000.  a travel allowance will also be available to 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and supervisors located outside the greater toronto area to offset the costs of attending ogi summer research fellowship events in toronto.  please note:  recipient may hold only one summer research fellowship award.

ontario universities, institutions and/or companies are strongly encouraged to support these outstanding 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 by supplementing the amount of the award using other sources.  universities may also provide fringe benefits, such as vacation, medical insurance, etc.

muskoka summit on the environment research grant

how to apply: 

purpose:

the muskoka summit on the environment (mse) is a biennial event that provides a forum for the public to explore and debate pressing environmental issues with leading thinkers in the field. the purpose of the mse research grant is to support graduate student environmental research within the muskoka river watershed, in the fields of environmental science, resource studies and/or policy.

 

eligibility:

any student accepted or currently enrolled in a graduate program related to environmental science, resource studies and/or policy is eligible for funding. the grant will be administered by the university where the student is enrolled. the mse organizing committee reserves the right to forego an award if no applications are deemed acceptable for funding.

 

 

 grant description:

the grant will be in the amount of $7,500, and is designed to support a wide range of environmental research on aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric environments. the student will be expected to prepare a final report (5 pages maximum) and budget statement within two years of receiving the grant, and to prepare a poster presentation of her/his research findings at the muskoka summit on the environment biennial meeting (in bracebridge, ontario).

funds must be used to support graduate student research activities within the muskoka region, and this may include:

  • graduate student stipend or salary
  • payment for research assistants
  • travel expenses to and from research sites, or to scientific conferences or workshops
  • equipment rental for research activities
  • books, periodicals or research materials
  • costs associated (e.g., page charges) with publication of research

 

the mse research grant may not be used to cover overhead or administrative expenses.

 

evaluation criteria:

applications will be reviewed and adjudicated by the mse committee using the following criteria:

  • quality and originality of the research proposal (25%), including a discussion on how the study aligns with other research in the muskoka region, and the data gaps it will fill (15%)
  • research and scholarly achievements of the applicant (30%)
  • description of how funds will be used (10%)
  • letter of support from academic advisor/supervisor (20%)

hesl muskoka undergraduate research award 2014

description

hesl will provide $5000 and a university researcher will provide a minimum of $2000 to support an undergraduate research assistant for 16 weeks, to assist with the researcher’s ongoing research into any aspect of aquatic ecosystem management in the muskoka river watershed, including the coastline of georgian bay. the student salary will be administered by the “friends of the muskoka watershed”. the student will be expected to attend a meeting of muskoka researchers and make a brief presentation on their summer experience during the last week of employment.

 

eligibility

any university student currently enrolled in 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of study leading to an honours degree.

application process:

 

the student should have contacted a researcher who has agreed to provide at least $2000 towards their summer wages and to engage them as part of their research team for the summer of 2014.

the student and professor are to submit a joint application containing:

  • a maximum two-page letter written by the student describing their understanding of the proposed research and their role in it, their career aspirations and how the award would assist with that,
  • a copy of their university transcripts to date demonstrating a minimum b average,
  • a maximum two-page letter from the researcher describing the research program and the student applicant’s role in it,
  • a commitment that the researcher will provide a minimum of $2000 towards the student award.

genomics application partnership program (gapp) - round 3

how to apply: 

genome canada launched a new funding program on june 3rd, 2013, seeking proposals which focus on the partnerships of users and academia and to promote the application of genomics-derived solutions to address key sector challenges or opportunities facing users - user pull.

with this program, genome canada aims to fund projects that have defined user partners and will have socioeconomic benefit to canada. in particular, projects must have a clear partnership between the user partner and the academic researcher(s).

there will be a rolling application process (outlined below) that will consist of an eoi and a full application. 

in order to better prepare the projects for this competition, ogi will also complete a due diligence review of the eois prior to submission to genome canada.

funds available

  • there is up to $30 million available for this competition from genome canada.
  • genome canada requires that at least two thirds of the requested funding for eligible costs be obtained through co-funding from other sources, with at least one third from the user.  
  • genome canada will invest a minimum of $100,000 and a maximum of $2 million in an individual project (i.e., with the maximum investment from genome canada, plus the required co-funding, a total investment of more than $6 million per project is possible).
  • successful individual projects will be awarded funding for a term of up to three years.
