§   are you (or do you know of) an organization, business, university or community college that could benefit from funding to support an internship in the area of natural sciences? 

§   do you know a post-secondary graduate who is looking for practical experience to support his/her career development in the natural sciences?

the science and technology internship program (stip) provides funding to organizations, businesses and institutions to support recent graduates in the natural sciences to gain relevant and meaningful work experience within their field of study.  since 1997, natural resources canada (nrcan) has been contributing to approximately 50 to 60 internships annually to assist youth find valuable work experience.

eligible employers (referred to as partners) can receive a contribution payment for up to 50% of the intern’s salary to a maximum of $13,200 per year.  partners are responsible for finding their own interns.

eligible interns include youth between the ages of 15 and 30 who are: 

§   out of school, unemployed or underemployed

§   graduates with a post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant field within the past two years

§   legally entitled to work in canada, and

§   not previous participants in an internship under the youth employment strategy

interns apply directly to employers and are employees of the partner.  approximately 70% of interns have found permanent employment immediately after their internship.  another 20% have returned to school to pursue further studies.

sshrc recognizes that peer reviewed scholarly journals are a primary tool for fostering intellectual debate and inquiry. today, new information and communication technologies are changing how research results are published and disseminated, allowing information to circulate more rapidly and widely than ever before.

in response, and in accordance with sshrc’s policy on open access, sshrc designed this funding opportunity to allow journals to seek support regardless of business model or distribution format.

the aid to scholarly journals funding opportunity’s goal is to increase dissemination, access to, and readership for, original research results in the social sciences and humanities, through canadian scholarly journals. it also assists journals as they seek to take advantage of advances in digital technologies.

aid to scholarly journals grants are awarded to help defray the costs of publishing scholarly articles, to assist with distribution costs, and to support journal organizations in transitioning to and maintaining digital formats.

eligibility: 

for your application to be eligible:

  1. the nominated principal applicant(s) and co-principal applicants in lmics must be independent researcher(s).
  2. in order to be considered eligible, teams must include researchers that are based in canada and lmic countries, as defined by the world bank. research with canada’s aboriginal populations is also eligible and in these cases, having international partners is not a requirement. researchers with canadian aboriginal populations may also include co-principal investigators or co-investigators from australia and/or lmics for projects focused on indigenous populations.
  3. demonstrated engagement of decision-makers and/or policy makers in the project. decision-makers and/or policy makers must be listed as applicants on the proposal.
  4. the nominated principal applicants for canadian-lmic teams must include two principal applicants registered at a lmic institution and/or at a canadian eligible institution.
  5. applicants may not apply to two different agencies with the same project. doing so is grounds for withdrawal of the application, with the exception of applications being submitted with canada-china or canada-india teams where the same application must be submitted to both competitions.
  6. for applications with research being conducted in canada, only aboriginal populations are eligible.

foundation scheme : 2014 1st live pilot

how to apply: 

the foundation scheme is designed to contribute to a sustainable foundation of new and established health research leaders, by providing long-term support for the pursuit of innovative and high-impact research programs.

the foundation scheme is expected to:

  • support a broad base of health research leaders across all career stages, areas, and health-related disciplines;
  • develop and maintain canadian capacity in health research and other related fields;
  • provide research leaders with the flexibility to pursue novel and innovative lines of inquiry;
  • contribute to the creation and application of health-related knowledge through a wide range of research and/or knowledge translation activities, including relevant collaborations.

 

new and early-career investigators: special consideration

new and early-career investigators are eligible to apply to the foundation scheme competition as a program leader. to support the objective of the program – a sustainable foundation of health research leaders – a minimum annual intake of new investigators into the foundation grant portfolio will be established. competition processes and peer review for this cohort will be fully integrated with the competition as a whole with no additional steps being required on the part of the applicant. eligibility for consideration as a new or early-career investigator is outlined in the eligibility section below.

the success of new/early career investigators in the foundation scheme will be actively monitored. peer reviewers will be instructed to take into consideration the career stage, research field and institution setting of all applicants. at stage 3, new/early career investigators will be assessed and ranked against other new/early career investigators.

registration to the 1st foundation scheme live pilot competition will be accepted  between march 24, 2014 and june 23, 2014

  • stage 1 applications for the 1st foundation scheme live pilot competition will be accepted between june 23, 2014 and september 15, 2014. 
  • only successful stage 1 applicants will be invited to apply to stage 2. stage 2 applications for the 1st foundation scheme live pilot competition will be accepted between december 1, 2014 and february 5, 2015.

how it works

the ontario research fund – research excellence (orf-re) provides research institutions with funding to help support the operational costs of large-scale transformative research of strategic value to the province.

who is eligible

eligible institutions include:

  • universities
  • colleges
  • research hospitals
  • non-profit research institutions

funding amount

orf-re provides up to 1/3 of the total value of a project with the remaining 2/3 from a combination of private sector and institutional contributions. generally, the minimum support provided by the orf-re to a project is $1 million and the maximum support provided is $4 million.

how to apply

the application process involves 4 steps:

  1. notify your research office that you plan to apply (faculty members  are asked to submit their letters of intent to the office of research services by february 7, 2014).
  2. your research office submits a notice of intent to apply (a document that lets the government know you plan to apply for an award)
  3. prepare the documents for your application package according to program guidelines and application instructions
  4. your research office submits the complete application package to the ministry of research and innovation
