global collaboration program

how to apply:

the samsung global research outreach (gro) program is samsung's (samsung electronics & affiliated samsung companies) academic research collaboration platform.

we annually invite world-class university researchers to submit innovative research proposals to foster collaborative relationships.

selected proposals will receive financial support for one year ranging from usd $70,000 to $100,000 including reasonable overhead. in some cases, larger awards may be possible for especially outstanding proposals. awards may be renewed up to three years, based on research outcomes and necessity for further research partnership driven by samsung. joint research proposals from multiple universities may also be accepted.

the gro program represents an opportunity for samsung and universities to build a mutually beneficial research relationship. we look forward to your participation.

therapeutic idea award: fy14 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis research program (alsrp)

how to apply:

the therapeutic idea award is designed to promote new ideas that are still in the early stages of development with the potential to yield highly impactful data and new avenues of investigation for novel therapeutics for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (als) treatment. this mechanism supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancement in als therapeutics. proposed research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale that holds translational potential to improve als treatment and/or advances a novel treatment modality. projects that focus primarily on investigating the pathophysiology of als are outside the scientific scope of this mechanism.

breakthrough award levels 1 and 2: fy14 breast cancer research program (bcrp)

how to apply:

the intent of the breakthrough award is to support promising research that has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer. the critical components of this award mechanism are:

impact: research supported by the breakthrough award will have the potential for a major impact and accelerate progress toward ending breast cancer. the impact may be near-term or long-term, but must be significant and move beyond an incremental advancement. applications must articulate the pathway to making a clinical impact for individuals with, or at risk for, breast cancer, even if clinical impact is not an immediate outcome.

research scope: research proposed under this award mechanism may be small- to large-scale projects, at different stages of idea and research development. two different funding levels, based on the scope of the research, are available under this program announcement/funding opportunity. funding levels 3 and 4 are available under a different program announcement (w81xwh-14-bcrp-breakthrough34). it is the responsibility of the principal investigator (pi) to select the funding level that is most appropriate for the research proposed.

call for proposals: belmont forum – international opportunities fund (arctic observing and research for sustainability)

how to apply:

nserc, along with 11 other members of the international belmont forum— a group of the world’s major and emerging funders of global environmental change research and international science councils—jointly announced their participation in a collaborative action to advance arctic research.

this initiative encourages integrated teams of natural and social scientists, as well as stakeholders, to develop projects that leverage existing arctic observing systems, datasets and models to evaluate key sustainability challenges and opportunities in the arctic region.

by utilizing and developing (1) the relevant information streams and (2) the sustainability science necessary to assess, predict, inform, and communicate resilient pathways, this call for proposals seeks to advance research across four themes:

  • the natural and living environment
  • the built environment and infrastructures
  • natural resource management and development
  • governance

for its part, nserc will provide direct funding to eligible canadian researchers to participate in small collaboration and synthesis grants related to their activities in funded projects in the natural sciences and engineering, excluding actual research costs.
