preterm birth initiative

how to apply:

the preterm birth initiative was created to increase the understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying parturition and spontaneous preterm birth and will provide up to $600,000 over a four-year period ($150,000 per year).  the initiative is designed to stimulate both creative individual scientists and multi-investigator teams to approach the problem of preterm birth using creative basic and translation science methods.  postdoctoral fellows nearing their transition to independent investigator status through senior established investigators are encouraged to apply.  molecular and computational approaches such genetics/genomics, immunology, microbiology, evolutionary biology, mathematics, engineering, and other basic sciences hold enormous potential for new insights independently or in conjunction with more traditional areas of parturition research such as maternal fetal medicine, obstetrics, and pediatrics. the formation of new connections between reproductive scientists and investigators who are involved in other areas will give preterm birth research a fresh and unique look, and stimulate a new workface to tackle this challenge.

  • be enrolled full-time at a recognized university at the master's, doctoral, or post-doctoral level in canada or in a developing country for the duration of the award period;
  • have a university degree in agriculture, forestry, or biology;
  • submit a research proposal focusing on very simple cropping-systems research that can benefit smallholder farmers in developing countries, especially rural women farmers;
  • provide evidence that you will be supported by local institutions that have a good working relationship with target communities, farmers, and/or extension agencies;
  • indicate that you will seek cooperation, help, and support from local "extension officers" and/or ngos in the identification of individual farmers who are likely to be suitable and cooperative;
  • provide evidence that a large part or all of the research will be carried out on the farms of resource-poor or smallholder farmers. the award will not support research carried out on the farms of large landholders or on research stations;
  • provide evidence that farmers will actively participate in the experiments. it is essential to develop simple on-farm experimental designs with appropriate controls to determine the practicality and profitability of introducing a leguminous crop or other fertility-enhancing plant in the farmers’ cropping systems.
how to apply:

workplace opportunities: removing barriers to equity

how to apply:

workplace opportunities: removing barriers to equity is a new grant and contribution program designed to support employers subject to the employment equity act in their efforts to improve designated group representation in areas of low representation through partnerships and industry-tailored strategies.

since its enactment, the act has sought to achieve equality in the workplace and correct the disadvantages experienced by four designated groups: women, aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities and members of visible minorities. despite varying degrees of progress, under-representation persists in a number of occupational groups and sectors.

workplace opportunities will provide funding to eligible recipients to develop tailored solutions to support sectors experiencing low representation. the representation tab identifies the areas of low representation that workplace opportunities will focus on. actual representation and availability data is available upon request.

development of research proposal and registry to evaluate the potential effectiveness of psychiatric service dogs in treating ptsd in veterans

how to apply:

veterans affairs canada (vac) has an interest in the benefits of psychiatric service dog for those veterans diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (ptsd) in canada. in 2013 vac commissioned a report on the use of psychiatric service dogs (psds) as an intervention to assist individuals with a mental health condition. the report found that while the current state of the research is very limited, there is anecdotal evidence that psds might assist persons who live with ptsd. however existing research on these questions is not conclusive. vac intends to fund a 24 month pilot study to investigate the potential benefits and risks of psds in functionally assisting veterans who have ptsd to inform policy development. the department requires a detailed proposal that articulates how researchers would develop, conduct and report on this pilot study according to specified goals and objectives.

the canadian institute for military and veteran health research (cimvhr) has entered into partnership with the government of canada to procure research and development services related to the mental, social and physical wellbeing of active military members, veterans and their families. cimvhr is seeking notices of interest from researchers to enter into a contract with cimvhr to produce this work.

the successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

 _an md or phd in a relevant discipline;

 _demonstrated experience with the research design of applied complex studies;

 _a faculty appointment at or formal affiliation with one of cimvhr’s 32 partner universities (a list of partner universities is available at www.cimvhr.ca);

 _be able to meet project deliverables within 3 months of contract award.

 _please see the attached statement of work (sow) for more details.

interested researchers may submit a notice of interest that includes:

 _their cv;
