ehealth innovations partnership program

how to apply:

funding launch: september 2014
registration deadline: february 3, 2015
application deadline: april 1, 2015
anticipated funding start: july 1, 2015

this september, the canadian institutes of health research (cihr) will launch the ehealth innovations partnership program (ehipp), a collaborative funding opportunity designed to create a new generation of cost-effective patient- and population-centered health care solutions.  ehipp will support partnerships between canadianhealth technology companies and ‘innovation communities '– local/regional healthcare delivery settings, such as hospitals, communities, school boards/post-secondary institutions  – to co-design and integrate innovative ehealth solutions that deliver real-world health care value. these funds will support pragmatic trials of new ehealth technologies in innovation community test beds that have the capacity and desire to integrate ehealth innovations into real-world service delivery.

the objectives of ehipp are to:
1. identify patient-oriented ehealth solutions that will improve health outcomes, patient experience, and lower the cost of care along the continuum for two ehipp priority areas:
 - early identification of, and intervention for youth and adolescents (11-25 years of age) with mental health conditions
 - support of seniors with complex care needs in their homes

2. foster partnerships between innovation communities and health technology companies to co-develop and evaluate the clinical benefit and cost-effectiveness of ehealth solutions in clinical- and population health-environments; these evaluations will take the form of cluster randomized, and/or randomized controlled trials (level 1 evidence) so as to assist in the subsequent commercialization of successful innovations

funding

ehipp will fund individual grants of up to $1.5 million over four years, with half of this funding coming from health technology partners, economic development agencies, and other health funding agencies. cihr will match these partnership funds on a 1:1 basis up to a maximum of $750,000. partnership funds previously secured for innovation development are considered eligible if received within 18 months of the funding start date (july 1, 2015).

support for partnership development

to facilitate the formation of partnerships between innovation communities and health technology companies, a series of regional workshops will occur during the fall and winter of 2014. webinars will also be held during this timeframe to provide information for prospective applicants to enhance the competitiveness of their applications.

spark program 2014 - natural resources competition

how to apply:

with the spark program, the ontario genomics institute (ogi) seeks to provide investigators with catalytic funding to enable them to undertake novel, high-impact, highly innovative and/or early-stage projects in the genomic sciences (genomic sciences refers to genomics and related disciplines such as proteomics, bioinformatics and other *omics research fields) which can improve, provide tools, resources or tangible outcomes for the natural resources sector. the spark grants are intended for projects where funding would otherwise be difficult to obtain due to the early-stage nature of the proposed research. outcomes of such projects should enable the applicant the opportunity to achieve follow-on investment or funding for further research or development that will ultimately lead to a measurable outcome or development of a product.

the overall goal of the spark program is to catalyze new research directions and increase the competitiveness of ontario research and its life sciences sector. the ideal proposal will focus on developing projects that utilize genomics to transform research in the natural resources sector. projects should address major hurdles or present opportunities that will push genomic sciences in new directions, initiate collaborations, broadly benefit the scientific community and in the long term create capabilities that will benefit the natural resources sector.

ogi will provide individual awards of up to $30,000 to be used for short duration (6 months) research projects. ogi may fund up to four (4) research projects per year. funded research must be performed in ontario (principal investigator (pi) must be at an academic or research institution for eligibility) and should focus on a discrete, unique and transformative projects relevant to genomics sciences.

projects should be relevant to the natural resource sector and, for example, may focus in any of the following areas:

  • energy;
  • mining;
  • forestry (including insects and diseases);
  • fish and wildlife;
  • water;
  • environment (including climate change).
