how to apply: 

the operating grant: innovative biomedical and clinical hiv/aids research will support innovative or high-risk biomedical and clinical research directly relevant to the priority objectives of the cihr hiv/aids research initiative.

the specific objectives of the funding opportunity are to: 

  • enable new and established investigators to undertake innovative research projects in new areas of investigation or take previous discoveries in new directions;
  • promote the development and testing of novel research tools and methodologies); and
  • support high-risk research projects with the potential for high impact, breakthrough and/or transformative advances.

relevant research areas

  • biology of early hiv infection, pathogenesis and immunology relevant to the identification of new immunogens, correlates of protection and other aspects of hiv prevention.
  • host and viral factors influencing hiv persistence (including viral latency) and viral reservoirs; creating models (cellular and animal) of hiv latency and assays to measure persistent hiv infection; and other aspects of hiv cure strategies.
  • approaches to vaccine development including novel adjuvants and platforms for immunization.
  • virological and biological aspects of aging and co-morbid conditions (e.g., chronic diseases and co-infections) for people living with hiv.

operating grant: environmental urban health research consortium

how to apply: 

the consortium is expected to be a national interdisciplinary and intersectoral resource bringing together researchers from academia, government, non-governmental organisations and industry with appropriate partners and stakeholders to undertake a pan-national research program focused on addressing key issues related to the impact of the urban environment on health.

the specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

  • provide researchers with one-stop access to ‘analysis-ready’ environmental data relevant to the urban form (i.e. air quality, active and passive transportation, green/natural spaces, land use data and policies, climate change/extreme weather, etc.);
  • provide researchers with models/methods/analytics to assess environmental exposure to address specific health research questions, including the ability to measure the impact of exposures over time;
  • lead to the creation of new knowledge of priority environmental health issues in the urban form, and accelerate its transfer to relevant stakeholders;
  • enable government agencies (federal, provincial, municipal) to incorporate environmental health research into new and existing policy-relevant projects;
  • enable existing cohorts to add environmental (prospective and retrospective) data to their datasets, namely through linkage with relevant data sources;
  • foster capacity-building by providing training for early-career scientists; and
  • become a resource for public and private organizations seeking access to a network of leading canadian scientists to conduct research in the field of environments and health.

how to apply: 

partnership grants provide support for new and existing formal partnerships over four to seven years to advance research, research training and/or knowledge mobilization in the social sciences and humanities through mutual co-operation and sharing of intellectual leadership, as well as through resources as evidenced by cash and/or in-kind contributions.

partnership grants are intended for large teams working in formal collaboration between postsecondary institutions and/or organizations of various types.

formal partnership is a bilateral or multilateral formal collaboration agreement between an applicant and one or more partner organizations, of which at least one must be a canadian postsecondary institution and at least one must be different from the institution or organization that will administer the grant funds. partnerships may be between academic institutions, or between one or more academic institutions and one or more non-academic partner organizations. these partner organizations agree and commit to work collaboratively to achieve shared goals for mutual benefit. partner organizations must provide evidence attesting to the commitment that has been agreed upon. for more information, see the definitions for formal partnership and partner organization.

japan society for the promotion of science invitation fellowship programs

how to apply: 

the japan society for the promotion of sciences (jsps) conducts two programs (a short- and a long-term program) under the invitation fellowship heading. funded by a subsidy from the japanese government, these fellowship programs were established to promote international cooperation in and mutual understanding through scientific research.

the programs allow scientists employed at japanese universities/research institutions to invite fellow researchers from other countries to japan to participate in cooperative activities. these programs presuppose the existence of contacts between scientists in japan and in other countries, a condition considered favourable to the promotion of future scientific cooperation and exchange. nserc is responsible for selecting canadian nominees for these fellowships.

this call is open to organizations from canadian civil society that are incorporated and headquartered in canada (excluding universities, colleges, and hospitals) and produce research and share knowledge for development. the lead organization may apply on its own behalf or on behalf of a consortium of civil society organizations and should demonstrate the capacity to manage large budgets. the lead organization must be partnered by one or more other organizations based in canada and/or low- or middle-income countries; these partners may be from the civil society, academic, government, or private sectors.

the cardiac arrhythmia network of canada (canet) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to transforming canada’s arrhythmia healthcare system through integrated multidisciplinary research and development. in addition to funding research, canet acts as a facilitator to bring researchers together with knowledge receptors in industry, government and not-for-profit sectors centred around patients to focus on critical healthcare needs and opportunities for canada. it offers specialized resources and services to advance research as well as facilitates knowledge mobilization, technology transfer and commercialization of new discoveries that will impact the lives of those living with arrhythmia.

each application will include a proposed research program with sub-projects designed to impact the care and/or lives of people living with arrhythmias. the program will describe the path a particular area of research takes from concept to implemented solution. a program will likely include a number of research projects which proceed along the continuum of discovery, validation, proof of concept, pre-clinical evaluation, clinical evaluation and implementation.

cardiac arrhythmia network of canada

aerospace r&d challenge program

ontario centres of excellence (oce), the ontario aerospace council (oac), the consortium for aerospace research and innovation in canada (caric), and the natural sciences and engineering research council of canada (nserc) are partnering to support collaborative research and development projects by ontario industry companies and academic research partners through oce’s voucher for industry association r&d challenge program. 

the aerospace r&d challenge is a $2.5-million program initiative supporting areas of technology that are strategically important to the ontario aerospace sector. goals of the program include development of technological breakthroughs and new enabling technologies, with significant economic benefit for ontario (jobs, revenues, etc.).

university research awards are designed to encourage research at canadian universities in areas of interest to imperial oil's petroleum, petrochemical and energy resource development businesses. these areas include the fields of engineering, environmental, earth, chemical, and physical sciences.
