the sessions will take approximately an hour with a ‘presentation and q&a format’ using teams live events (tle) and slido.

these events are an opportunity for researchers and the broader research community to validate and provide further feedback on ndrio’s consultations to date as relates to dri usage, or the tools and services required to support research excellence. these consultations were conducted over the past four months through a call for white papers and current documentation, as well as a survey of researchers across canada.

the virtual town halls (four events in english; four in french) are open to researchers in canada from across disciplines, levels of engagement with dri tools and research experience. we hope that you will share this event information with your networks to encourage participation.

as a values-based institution, viu is committed to improving its community with a safe and inclusive environment for all. viu has taken a proactive stance in equity, diversity and inclusion (edi) issues. knowing that other universities across canada are also developing or implementing their edi plans, viu invited members of the alliance of canadian comprehensive research universities (accru), a network of small and medium-sized comprehensive universities from across canada, to join a community of practice and collaborate in a symposium about the best practices for edi action plans. 

viu led the social sciences and humanities research council’s (sshrc) connection grant to fund the symposium that will provide a venue for collaboration, discussions and shared learning around equity, diversity and inclusion action planning. the purpose of the symposium is to provide a space for the participating universities to collaboratively develop a deeper understanding of research-based edi best practices, including how to build institutional capacity; how to handle resistance to advancement of edi on campuses; how to manage institutional cultural shifts when prioritizing edi at universities; how to effectively apply an intersectional lens to edi action and analysis; and the legal and human rights aspects of edi. the event will take place over two days (march 24-25) with sessions ranging from presentation of data to interactive workshops.

you are invited to a talk from 2018 gairdner global health laureate, dr. alan lopez, on thursday, march 11 at 4:00pm. dr. lopez won the award for his groundbreaking work in conceptualizing and quantifying the global burden of disease.

centering two-spirit and indigenous experiences and ways is critical for more respectful, reciprocal, relevant, and responsible health research. two-spirit is often equated to an lgbtq indigenous participant; thereby, rendering this community’s unique experience and history invisible and erasing important distinctions. this type of scholarship becomes a site of colonization. the challenge is how to collect two-spirit data that in culturally safe and affirming ways, so health research(ers) are given the opportunity to do rigorous sex- and gender-based analysis that promotes science that considers biological sex and accounts for all genders in an effort to expand our collective understanding(s) within a diversity framework. this presentation examines some decolonizing practices to better formulate health research, policies and programs that are relevant, respectful and mindful to two-spirit people and communities or in other words be a site of reconcilia(c)tion in research.

learning objectives:
1. explore what and who is two-spirit and differences between non-indigenous understandings, notions and ways such as lgbtqi
2. discuss practical guidance of best practices for doing more respectful, reciprocal, relevant, and responsible (decolonizing) health research
3. receive recently published guidance on how to collect two-spirit data in a culturally affirming and sensitive way - “meet the methods series: ‘what and who is two-spirit?”’ in health research.”

hackathon: gather a team & register by january 15

from february 22 - march 3, simon fraser university (sfu) is hosting a gpu hackathon. the event is free, online, and invites scientists and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to experiment with accelerating their hpc codes in a collaborative environment with expert mentors from national labs, universities and industry leaders. 

this event is open to all compute canada federation users and teams will use sfu's supercomputer cedar, one of five national host sites within canada's national arc platform.

no advanced gpu skills are required, but teams will be expected to know the basics of gpu programming and profiling at the event. a collection of gpu lectures, tutorials, and labs will be made available for all participants at no fee. hurry - the deadline to register is friday, january 15!
