campus safety audits

event date:
thursday, february 8, 2018 - 9:00am est
event location:

the office of human rights and equity is looking for enthusiastic and diverse volunteers from 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , staff, and faculty to participate in campus safety audits.

what is a campus safety audit?
a campus safety audit is the process by which campus spaces are assessed for their perceived safety and inclusivity. a diverse group of “auditors” will walk through a space, each with a checklist that asks questions to understand if a user feels welcome and comfortable moving through it.

questions around signage, lighting, and access are some of the physical considerations, while non-physical elements include is it a welcoming space, or uncomfortable?

safety audits are premised on the notion that users of a space are often the experts on the problems and solutions for creating protective and inclusive environments. thus it is key to have an audit group that is reflective of the diversity in our user population.

how do i participate?

  • sign up for the buildings you wish to audit and when you are available by filling out this google form
  • once we have a group of participants, you will be sent information on the date and time of the audits. each audit will be conducted in a group of three or more participants, with one person who will be responsible for leading the group on a walkabout of the building

other information about the audit

  • the audits will take place during daytime hours
  • each audit will last approximately two hours, including time for a debrief where we can get together to discuss our observations

as part of this process we would like to strongly encourage members of equity-seeking groups (women, gender minority, racialized, indigenous, person with a disability, lgbtq2, etc.) to participate in these audits. the more diversity, the better able we are to make our spaces safer and more inclusive for everyone.

please contact amna siddiqui at sv.hre@lakeheadu.ca for more information.

peer-support group for survivors of sexual violence

event date:
monday, february 12, 2018 - 4:30am est
event location:
gender equity centre
event contact e-mail:

the gender equity centre will be hosting a peer-support group for survivors of sexual violence.  the first meeting will happen on february 12th, at 4:30pm.

sexual assault is a traumatic experience that can impact a person on many levels (academic/work, psychological, physical, social and emotional) and overcoming sexual violence can be a difficult and slow journey.  not only does one need to heal physically, there is also an invisible emotional and mental weight which victims and survivors continue to carry long after the experience. while reporting procedures and campus policy can support a victim when disclosing an assault, a key piece of emotional assistance is missing from the current system in place.

why facilitate peer support?
every survivor of sexual violence is different; every survivor’s experience of violence is different. a peer support, which aligns with “the belief that people who have faced, endured, and overcome adversity can offer useful support, encouragement, hope, and perhaps mentorship to others facing similar situations” (survivors helping survivors) is the informal counselling approach used by rise above.

some key characteristics of peer‐support initiatives usually include the following:

·         not professionally‐led, informal discussion

·         people gather for support based on a shared issue or experience.

·         may include self‐help, mutual support, mutual‐aid, support groups, and mentoring.

·         may be change‐oriented, social‐oriented, support‐oriented, or focussed on social action.

how do we begin this at lakehead?
as with many social changes that happen on campuses, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 need to take the lead. this first meeting will establish how members will contact one another, how often the meetings will take place, and other facilitation aspects. this will be a closed discussion, meaning that it is only open to those who self-identify as victims or survivors of sexual violence and wish to participate in peer support.

the gender equity centre is a safe, inclusive space to meet and the decision to hold the meeting afterhours was consciously made to ensure the space will remain closed.

if you are interested in this, but aren’t available to come out on the 12th, please send us an e-mail so that we can see about holding this space on a different day, or at a different time.
