in memoriam - dr. sharon-dale stone
the university community was saddened to learn that dr. sharon-dale stone, chair of the department of sociology, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly from medical complications on thursday, july 10.
lakehead has lost a wonderful scholar, teacher, colleague, and friend who will be sorely missed. dr. stone made many significant contributions to the sociology department, the university, and the community.
she joined the university in august of 1998 and made an immediate impact in the department. her research spanned the areas of gender and sexuality, disability studies, injured workers rights, and critical approaches to health, aging, and gerontology.
dr. stone is the author of a change of plans: women’s stories of hemorrhagic stroke(2007).
she also edited lesbians in canada (1990), and recently, working bodies: chronic illness in the canadian workplace (may, 2014), with mcgill-queen’s university press.
she also wrote more than 50 journal articles, book chapters, reports and reviews. she was a passionate advocate for the rights of people living with disabilities and injured workers, and fought for social justice within and outside of academia.

congratulations dr. david nock, professor emeritus, department of sociology. dr. nock's first scholarly article appeared in 1973 and i share here with you his newest publication: his article entitled 'chicago's proclivity to qualitative sociology: myth or reality?', pp. 61-78 in the chicago school diaspora: epistemology and substance (editors jacqueline low and gary bowden, montreal and kingston, mcgill-queen's university press, 2013.

robert animikii horton receives award
robert graduated with a ma in sociology from lakehead in may 2011. his supervisor was dr. sharon-dale stone.
faculty of education contract lecturer and med student robert animikii horton received the graduate of the last decade award from st. cloud state university, minnesota in april.
robert was given this award in recognition of his first nation's activism and leadership.
these awards are presented annually to undergraduate alumni of the last decade who have shown outstanding achievement in their careers or in service to the community or to st. cloud state university.
