yoko hirota - pianist

"the title of this recital, and of my most recent cd, voces boreales (northern voices), signifies two ideas: northern ontario, my residence for the last twelve years, and canada, the northern country to many europeans. having performed contemporary music in canada and abroad for almost two decades, i have had the privilege of meeting composers whose aesthetics and musical universes are helping to shape canada’s musical identity.

voces boreales features solo piano works by five distinguished canadian composers – brian cherney, brian current, robert lemay, françois morel, and laurie radford.

two of these works, trinômeby françois morel and nachtstücke by brian cherney, were written for me, and were premiered during my "small is beautiful" 2011/2012 solo recital tour." - yoko hirota.

lumina concert no. 239

tuesday, february 11, 2014, 12:30 p.m.
jean mcnulty recital hall
william h. buset centre for music & visual arts

program

mcintosh the stein way, combining spoken text, piano, tape and live electronics, uses texts taken from the writings of gertrude stein. mcintosh's provocative and evocative piece picks up on stein's love of repetition - often using words and phrases soley for their sound and rhythm, resulting in a sense of immediacy. the unique place of gertrude stein in american letters rests upon her brilliant re-examination of the english language. using words as cubists used line and colour, often resulted in nonsensical texts. mcintosh's contemporary take offers a glimpse into the playful and profound mind of stein, as seen, felt, and enjoyed by mcintosh.
