winner of the 32nd annual eckhardt-grammatte national music competition for the performance of canadian music, carissa was also awarded the city of brandon prize for the best performance of the commissioned work, chaccone by t. patrick carrabré.
carissa earned her b.mus at the university of saskatchewan studying with philip kashap. in her fourth year, carissa won the position of principal second violin with the saskatoon symphony orchestra, a position she held for three years.
carissa performs frequently with the national arts centre orchestra, and was recently featured in recital at the ottawa international chamber music festival. she has participated in several music festivals throughout canada, including banff, orford, le domaine forget, and scotia festival of music. she is an artistic director of the ritornello chamber music festival in saskatoon.
acclaimed for the brilliance and sensitivity of his playing, as well as for his ability to connect with audiences, philip chiu has quickly established his reputation as a truly versatile artist.
second prize winner of the 2007 bosendorfer national piano competition, philip has appeared as a soloist throughout canada, most recently at the orford arts centre and for the lindsay concert foundation. also a highly sought-after collaborative pianist, this past season included over 75 recitals throughout montreal, including prize-winning performances for numerous national and international competitions. an avid chamber musician, philip recently toured central and eastern canada with duo pianist janelle fung under the auspices of jeunesses musicales canada (jmc). the upcoming season will include further appearances with ms. fung, a jmc tour with violinist andrew wan, and the 2009 eckhardt-gramatté national winner's tour with violinist carissa klopoushak.
