student steps for media studies internships

  mdst 3910 (fall 2023) or mdst 3930 (winter 2024)

note that you must be in the hbasc media, film and communications program to qualify for an internship.

 step one: register in myinfo

  • submit the special permission form in myinfo, applying for permission to register in mdst 3910 and/or mdst 3930
  • once approved, register in the course before the first day of classes. note that registration will be capped to ensure sufficient internship sites for everyone.

step two: application – due july 15, 2023 for fall and september 15, 2023 for winter.

a list of available internship sites will be distributed to everyone who has registered.  once you receive that list, prepare the following materials and submit them to alice den otter adenotte@lakeheadu.ca by the deadline above.

  •      the application form for media studies internships (which includes a ranking of top three internships)
  •      your resumé
  •       a cover letter for each site you prefer (which must be of professional quality, free from typos and other errors)

it is important that you do not contact any potential sites directly until your placement is finalized.  lakehead will review all of application materials and internship site requirements to determine the best fit for each internship student.  placements will be finalized as soon as possible (a minimum of two weeks prior to the beginning of each term).

step three: meet & complete final forms

after your placement is finalized, you will receive the internship agreement and student declaration forms by email. before classes start, you should meet with your lakehead faculty supervisor and internship site supervisor to do the following:

  • clarify internship placement expectations and guidelines
  • arrange work hours (5 hrs/week for 12 weeks, starting the first week of classes, with no work the week of reading week)
  • have both supervisors sign the internship agreement, and sign it yourself
  • sign the student declaration of understanding regarding workplace safety
  • give these two forms to your lakehead faculty supervisor to submit to carolyn rimkey
