  • ba – honours english, university of saskatchewan

previous teaching/work: 
  • i teach in multiple areas, but always with a focus on cultural studies. in general, the courses i teach focus on the following: 19th-century british literature and culture, popular culture, children’s literature, and animal studies. i often teach the following courses:
  • english 1117: introduction to popular culture
  • english 2913: introduction to literary and cultural theories
  • english 2917: children’s literature
  • english 3953: special topics in cultural studies 
  • i also teach special topics and seminar classes at the 3rd and 4th year levels on victorian literature or cultural studies topics.
research interests: 

my publications also focus on cultural studies: specifically, victorian literature and culture, animal studies, child studies, and contemporary fan and media studies. i have published on cruelty to animals and children; on victorian animal autobiographies; and, with dr. jenny roth from (formerly in gender and women’s studies), on fanfiction and its relation to traditional authorship and copyright law; and with dr. judith leggatt, on comics culture. my work has been published in scholarly journals such as children’s literature, victorian literature and culture, the journal for critical animal studies, transformative works and culture, continuum, and the journal of fan studies

graduate supervision:

i have supervised both graduate theses and projects in a wide variety of areas, on topics ranging from the literary ghost story, to girl-power in sailor moon, to heteronormativity in the harry potter series.
