systematic and scoping reviews

extract data

the data extraction stage of the review involves extracting relevant information from each of the studies. this allows for the comparison of variables of interest across the studies.

start by listing all of the data elements to be extracted. you will want to extract any information from the studies that will help you answer the research question.

for each study, extract relevant information on:

  • methodology
  • participants/setting
  • interventions
  • outcomes/results

a spreadsheet (excel), form (google forms), database (ms access) or software program (see extraction tools below) should be used for the extraction process.  this allows for the comparison of variables of interest across studies. it is important for the extraction tool and methodology to be well tested in advance by everyone who will be involved in the extraction.
