electronic theses and dissertations - 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 https://knowledgecommons.lakeheadu.ca/handle/2453/5 wed, 04 sep 2024 13:15:18 gmt 2024-09-04t13:15:18z exploring potential of freshwater microalgae in northern ontario for bioremediation and bioenergy production https://knowledgecommons.lakeheadu.ca/handle/2453/5364 exploring potential of freshwater microalgae in northern ontario for bioremediation and bioenergy production khatiwada, janak raj native freshwater microalgae play a crucial role in biofuel production due to their unique characteristics and environmental suitability. this study investigated the diversity of microalgae species in various freshwater ecosystems across northwestern ontario, canada and evaluated the nutrient removal, bioremediation and subsequent biomolecule production. microalgae are known for their biochemical diversity, synthesizing an extensive range of compounds including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins, pigments, and bioactive molecules in chapter one, we provided a comprehensive review on the microalgae cultivation and harvesting techniques along with pretreatment methods for the extraction of biomolecules. in chapter two, we isolated 75 potential microalgal isolates and characterized these stains to identify those with high potential for lipid and biomolecule production capacity through a combination of microscopy, molecular techniques, and biochemical analysis and identified the optimal light condition for the biomass and lipid production. among these isolated strains, a five microalgae strains with higher lipid production and growth were identified using molecular and morphological approaches. among four different photoperiods, 16l:8d light/dark cycle produced significantly higher biomass and lipids for chlorella sorokiniana, chlorella vulgaris, and chlamydomonas sp. [...] mon, 01 jan 2024 00:00:00 gmt https://knowledgecommons.lakeheadu.ca/handle/2453/5364 2024-01-01t00:00:00z exploring how the dark tetrad is associated with coping: an intensive longitudinal daily diary approach https://knowledgecommons.lakeheadu.ca/handle/2453/5363 exploring how the dark tetrad is associated with coping: an intensive longitudinal daily diary approach charlton, jaidyn k. personality is broadly defined as a stable and enduring configuration of cognitions, emotions, and behaviours that influence how an individual experiences everyday life. the dark tetrad describes a cluster of subclinical and socially aversive, “dark” personality traits (i.e., psychopathy, narcissism, machiavellianism, and sadism). personality, including varying degrees of dark personality traits, can influence the way that one copes. coping consists of methods that one employs to deal with stressors or their associated emotional responses, and these methods can be adaptive or maladaptive. although much research has examined how individuals higher in dark tetrad traits react to and experience stress, less research has been conducted directly examining how they cope with stress. the current study sought to evaluate and clarify how individuals higher in dark tetrad traits cope with daily stressors and to address stark methodological gaps in the literature. it was hypothesized that those with higher levels of dark tetrad traits would endorse greater maladaptive coping strategies (i.e., emotion-focused and avoidant/disengaged coping) in stressful daily situations compared to those with lower levels of dark tetrad traits. undergraduates (n=359) were recruited for an intensive longitudinal (daily diary) study. participants completed self-report measures on baseline personality, followed by a short daily survey each day for 14 days that evaluated stressors experienced over the last day and the methods that participants used to cope with them. multilevel regression analyses revealed that hypotheses were generally supported, such that individuals higher in psychopathy, machiavellianism, and sadism endorsed more emotion-focused and avoidant/disengaged coping, whereas, those higher in narcissism endorsed a combination of all types of coping (both adaptive and maladaptive). however, there were very few interactions between personality and daily stress to predict coping. [...] mon, 01 jan 2024 00:00:00 gmt https://knowledgecommons.lakeheadu.ca/handle/2453/5363 2024-01-01t00:00:00z exploring the role of climate emotion tools in climate science learning with youth and indigenous climate activists from mexico https://knowledgecommons.lakeheadu.ca/handle/2453/5362 exploring the role of climate emotion tools in climate science learning with youth and indigenous climate activists from mexico romero, malinali castañeda one of the biggest problems faced by activists, youth, indigenous people and other people at the forefront of climate impacts and the climate movement is inaction by governments and the majority of the world’s population. in response, there is a growing trend of introducing climate change education in different learning environments, from schools to universities to informal education in activism spaces, resulting in a wide range of climate-related emotions in learners. this study seeks to bridge the gap between research on climate education and climate emotions by exploring the possibilities and impacts of combining climate science education with peer-topeer tools that aim to enhance climate science learning and support the emotional resilience of youth and indigenous climate activists. deeply influenced by community-based participatory action research, this qualitative study consisted of semi-structured interviews with seven volunteer participants following a six-class online climate science course that was developed in collaboration with 12 potential course participants from two activist networks. the emotions tools were integrated into the classes, and participants found that these tools greatly benefit their lives, learning processes, and mental health, suggesting the importance of embedding socioemotional learning environments in both educational and activism contexts to foster community building and proactive engagement. mon, 01 jan 2024 00:00:00 gmt https://knowledgecommons.lakeheadu.ca/handle/2453/5362 2024-01-01t00:00:00z the social construction of dementia in main online news sources during covid-19 https://knowledgecommons.lakeheadu.ca/handle/2453/5361 the social construction of dementia in main online news sources during covid-19 kim, seunghyun this study aims to examine the social construction of dementia during covid-19 in online news sources during the covid-19 pandemic. social construction is not a concept that exists in objective reality but a concept that exists as a result of human interaction (bainbridge, 2023). mainly, the social construction of dementia can be divided into three sections-the medicalization of dementia, the psychological approach to dementia, and the stigma of dementia (bosco et al., 2019). learning about how dementia was talked about and socially constructed in the media during covid-19 can illuminate the ideas and stereotypes people have about dementia in general. in this study, i use the cultural conception, “hyodo” from south korea and apply it to how dementia was discussed in primary online news sources during the covid-19 pandemic. this analysis will provide insights into perspectives of online news sources regarding older people and the development of policies for people living with dementia in long-term care facilities during pandemic. while people with dementia live in community and long-term care settings, this study will focus specifically on long-term care settings, as most news articles during covid-19 focused on long-term care settings. additionally, the study aims to explore the role of the media in shaping public perceptions and attitudes toward dementia particularly during the covid-19 pandemic.
