join us as inspirational speaker and author sandi boucher, an anishnaabekwe from seine river first nation and a long time resident of thunder bay, shares how as individuals indigenous men and women are discovering, defining, and redefining who we are, how we look, and what we stand for.

métis fingerweaving craft

a member of the métis nation of ontario will be here to demonstrate and give instruction on fingerweaving.

introduction fingerweaving with the métis nation of ontario 

the art of fingerweaving originated among the first nations of the eastern woodlands. as they began trading with the french, they acquired wool, and the belts woven by the first nations became colourful. these colourful belts were so beautiful that the french adopted them as well! as french fur traders began to move west, many of them took wives from western first nations. their children, the métis, carried on the fur trade tradition, sporting the sash of their forefathers. to this day, the sash is an integral part of métis culture, and the art of finger weaving has become one of our proudest traditions!

smudging is traditionally a ceremony for purifying or cleansing the soul of negative thoughts of a person or place. 

during a smudge plant leaves or stems are placed in the container and ignited (preferably with a wooden match). the flames are then gently blown out and the smoke, which heals the mind, heart and body, is wafted over the person, either by hand or with an eagle feather. the person being smudged pulls the smoke to them and gently inhales the smoke. the ashes traditionally are returned to mother earth by disposing them outside on bare soil - it is believed that the negative thoughts and feelings have been absorbed by the ashes. a person can smudge themselves, or, someone can lead a smudge by holding the container and directing the smoke over others.

in her award-winning documentary, inuk director alethea arnaquq-baril offers a close look at the critical role of seal hunting in the lives of inuit, and its importance to their sustainable economies in face of the aggressive and negative impact international campaigns and ban against the seal hunt has on their lives.
