job duties

• performs mechanical maintenance work through the university’s computerized work order system.
• inspects, investigates and solves problems related to the operation of both the mechanical systems and equipment, providing technical advice as necessary. 

• performs skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level.
• provides estimates of work for repairs to mechanical systems on campus.
• makes necessary reports and keeps records and files as required of work orders, requisition, upgrades and changes to systems, etc. 

• takes every precaution reasonable in the circumstance for the protection of workers in their charge.

• works in compliance with the occupational health and safety act, with other health and safety related legislation and standards, and with such workplace practices as outlined by their immediate supervisor. 

• performs other related duties as required.

skills & abilities

• knowledge of recognized practices and techniques and the use of tools, equipment and

instruments common to the mechanical trades.

• ability to install, overhaul and adjust systems from sketches, blueprints of specifications: ability

to prepare sketches and/or diagrams for blueprints.

• must have a thorough knowledge of the theory and operation of pneumatic and electrical

controls as well as a working knowledge of the theory, principles and operation of heating,

ventilating and air conditioning system, refrigeration, plumbing and steam fitting.

• ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
• ability to do heavy physical labour on occasion and to work on ladders, scaffolds, lift devices

and in crawl spaces etc.

• must be familiar with the occupational health and safety act, its regulations and other health

and safety related legislation and standards.
