leadership in energy and environmental design (leed) is a third-party certification program and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. from 2009 onwards, and in accordance with the university's sustainable building policy, all future builds on the orillia and thunder bay campuses will be built to leed standards.
leed promotes a holistic approach to sustainability by recognizing building performance in five key areas of human and environmental health, including:

- energy efficiency
- materials selection
- indoor environmental quality
