the first talk takes place on thursday, august 11 from 5 – 6:30 pm at lakehead’s 500 university avenue campus and features dr. md saidul islam, associate professor at nanyang technological university in singapore.
his topic will be “globalization project and the neoliberal paradox: quest for a sustainable earth.”
dr. saidul islam’s research interests include international development and environmental sociology with particular emphasis on the global agro-food system, global commodity networks, global environmental governance, agrarian change, and labour and gender dimension in rural development.
“the new series will focus on topics covering the three main research areas of the rcsc – environmental sustainability, political economy, and social justice,” explains centre director, dr. nanda kanavillil. “this is a chance for members of the university and the public to hear from scholars on a wide variety of interdisciplinary research topics – all related to having a positive impact on the sustainability of our communities.”
the research centre for sustainable communities was established in 2014 to focus on interdisciplinary research that supports sustainable communities. the centre’s unconventional approach to research, with an emphasis on multi-disciplines and collaboration, will be a catalyst for research funding and community partnerships.
the august 11 talk is free and open to the public.
