dr. vijay mago, chair and associate professor in computer science, is creating the program to serve indigenous youth in grades 7 to 10 across northwestern ontario.

“in addition to the coding skills gained through the delivery of programming, our intention is to encourage youth to pursue a career in stem (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and to enroll in high school courses that are prerequisites in the post-secondary fields,” dr. mago said.

the results of dr. mago’s work will introduce indigenous youth to modern computer science skills and approaches through a consistent six-week program delivered by a skilled computer science graduate student as a new component of existing niijii mentorship programming that serves over 4,000 indigenous 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 per year.

lisa harris, coordinator of the niijii indigenous mentorship program at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , will facilitate both virtual and in-person delivery of the programming.

“the promoscience grant in support of our niijii indigenous mentorship coding program is an investment in indigenous youth in northwestern ontario,” harris said.

“our goal is to increase opportunities for youth to enter into stem-based education and eventually into stem-based careers. the ultimate goal is for those same youth to have the option of working in a computer science/stem career from their home communities, to build capacity and sustainability across the north,” she added.

the office of indigenous initiatives will work with the department of computer science to offer computer programming to the youth of whitesand and gull bay first nations, said denise baxter, vice-provost, indigenous initiatives.

“the nserc promo-science funding grant allows niijii and the department of computer science to enhance ontario’s current coding curriculum while providing fundamental skills development to prepare indigenous youth for today's fast-paced and technology-centred world,” baxter said.

this program will inspire youth to pursue stem-based education and careers in the fields of computer science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

it will also increase the potential for indigenous youth in northern and remote communities to access high-demand, high-paying stem careers that can be done remotely or in person, and support the delivery of technology and resource distribution so technologies are accessible to these communities.

“we are very fortunate to be working in partnership with the niijii indigenous mentorship program and dr. vijay mago at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ,” said corey dagenais, principal of armstrong public school.

“the goal of this program is to use coding to support 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in developing a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

“co-teaching opportunities with 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and classroom teachers will enhance mathematical thinking and benefit our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 as they begin to solve problems and create computational representations of mathematical situations using code,” dagenais said.

aj keene, superintendent of education at lakehead public schools, said the school board appreciates its partnership with 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“coding is new to the elementary mathematics curriculum and it is a subject area that has been received extremely well by 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , educators, and parents alike,” keene said.

“we anticipate that our indigenous 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will benefit greatly from participating in this project, as it combines research and practical classroom experience. the results of the research will hopefully inspire the further implementation of coding in classrooms to apply the learnings collected from this study,” keene said.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers receive banting fellowships for projects involving first nations people

july 26, 2021 – thunder bay, ont.

two 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers have been awarded banting postdoctoral fellowships of $70,000 per year to study an online mental health intervention system for first nations people and initiate a conversation about archival footage and medicine with sandy lake first nation.

the banting postdoctoral fellowships program provides two-year funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social, and research-based growth.

dr. elaine toombs

dr. elaine toombs will evaluate the development and implementation of a virtual, culturally-relevant mental health intervention system for individuals from first nations communities to address accessibility related to substance use.

“study objectives aim to contribute to the current evidence on mental health needs, delivery, and guidelines for first nations people by promoting four major outcomes based on indigenous healing theories related to hope, belonging, meaning, and purpose,” dr. toombs said.

seven treatment centres across canada have collaborated to create this online intervention system.

“together in collaboration with the thunderbird partnership foundation, we have mobilized a virtual care environment to create and adapt content that can improve accessibility and continuity of services,” she said.

this content includes self-management resources, virtual psycho-educational groups, and virtual individual or group-based treatment for registered clients with each partnering treatment centre.

this research respectfully involves and engages indigenous communities. many first nations communities report increased rates of substance use when compared to non-indigenous communities. within remote or rural communities, it can be difficult to provide consistent access to services.

the study will evaluate the development and implementation of a virtual culturally-relevant mental health intervention system for first nations individuals to address accessibility to mental health services related to substance use.

researchers will examine both outcome and process-based data, using a mixed-method approach including interviews with treatment centre staff and service participants, quantitative measures of participant well-being, and program feasibility measures of attrition, technological difficulties, and participant engagement. results will be used to generate recommendations for future virtual health research.

dr. chris mushquash, associate professor in psychology and canada research chair in indigenous mental health and addiction, is supervising dr. toombs during this project.

dr. travis hay

dr. travis hay will bring archival records to members of sandy lake first nation to initiate a conversation on histories of medicine shaped by political leaders, elders, and collaborative research relations grounded in respect, reciprocity, and reconciliation.

“anishinaabe communities in northwestern ontario have historically been positioned as sites of medical training, nutrition experiments, gene-hunting studies, and other forms of colonial science and medicine wherein settlers travel to communities to extract data,” dr. hay said.

his project, called bringing it back to community: archival repatriation and colonial histories of medicine in northwestern ontario, 1962-1999, will include databasing and digitizing archival records deemed significant to sandy lake first nation.

“i will be working primarily with the anishinaabe elder teri redsky fiddler, whose family has a rich history of leadership, resistance, and diplomacy within and beyond sandy lake. it is hoped that our collaborative project will lay the basis for future archival repatriation initiatives with other member communities of nishnawbe aski nation,” dr. hay added.

dr. lana ray, assistant professor of indigenous learning, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 indigenous research chair in decolonial futures, department of indigenous learning and widely recognized expert in community-based research methods, is supervising dr. hay during this project.

dr. andrew p. dean, lakehead’s vice-president, research and innovation, thanked the banting postdoctoral selection committee for recognizing lakehead’s researchers through these grants.

“a special thank you to our post-doctoral fellows and their supervisors as well – for your passion and dedication to your work,” dr. dean said.

“you help make lakehead an award-winning, research-intensive university.”

our changing world is the theme of this year’s research and innovation week being held virtually by 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜

february 25, 2021 – thunder bay and orillia, ont.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s 16th annual research and innovation week will be held from march 1 to 5 and this year it’s virtual, meaning you can enjoy all of the festivities from the comfort of your home.

this year’s theme is our changing world. we've all heard the catch-phrases: in these unprecedented times, we are all in this together, to try to flatten the curve, while adjusting to a new normal.

our world is changing. living through a global pandemic has radically changed so much of our daily lives. we look to scientists, political leaders, artists, and intellectual thinkers for direction, as they work tirelessly to improve health and well-being, drive us toward social equity, and aid us in discerning fact from fiction.

these are uncertain times, but as we pivot in these uncharted waters, we look to research and innovation to help us understand and appreciate this new world.

with this year's research and innovation week being virtual, lakehead’s researchers and guest speakers are ready to showcase research and innovation excellence and the positive impact it has on our changing world.

this year 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 invites you to attend some or all of the following events.

research and innovation week will begin on monday, march 1 at 11:20 am with the opening ceremonies and keynote talk with bob mcdonald, host of cbc's quirks and quarks. in his talk, surviving the third millennium, mcdonald will discuss global issues facing us now and in the future such as climate change, water supply issues, droughts, floods, and energy shortage.

can we engineer our way through another thousand years of civilization? macdonald says yes, and canada is in a position to lead the way.

at 7 pm on monday, lakehead’s faculty of science and environmental studies will host a talk by dr. herman pontzer, associate professor of evolutionary anthropology and research associate professor of global health at duke university, called hotter and sicker: climate change, human health, and the tangled evolutionary roots of our species' dependence on external energy.

dr. pontzer’s talk will describe the dual crises of climate change and chronic, or non-communicable, disease, which have emerged worldwide as the global economy has industrialized over the past two centuries.

in this discussion, dr. pontzer will examine humans’ dependence on external (non-metabolic) energy expenditure (e.g., fire, fossil fuels) as a common, root cause in these modern crises.

there will also be a series of 10 research showcase presentations exploring how research is contributing to the achievement of the united nations sustainable development goals.

this includes a keynote panel discussing the role of research as an agent of climate action initiatives, moderated by dr. andrew p dean, vice-president research and innovation, with panelists, dr. adam cornwell, department of geography, dr. ellen field, faculty of education, dr. lindsay galway, canada research chair in social-ecological health, ledah mckeller, sustainability coordinator, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and summer stevenson, sustainability coordinator, city of thunder bay, from noon until 1:30 pm on tuesday, march 2.

in the same speaker series, dr. todd randall, dean of science and environmental studies, will moderate a panel discussion called turtle conservation in ontario: challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing world.

happening on tuesday, march 2 from 1:45 to 3:15 pm, this discussion will feature panelists tricia robins, park ecologist, parks canada - bruce peninsula national park; sara solaimani, public outreach education officer, parks canada - georgian bay and ontario east field unit; dr. stephen hecnar, professor and researcher, department of biology, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ; dr. linda rodenburg, director, community engagement and lifelong learning, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

county of simcoe presents final instalment of $10-million pledge

july 22, 2021 – orillia, ont.

on behalf of county council, county of simcoe warden george cornell officially announced the final instalment of a 10-year commitment from the county of simcoe to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

the final $500,000 instalment completes a $10-million pledge from the county of simcoe, which was approved by county council in 2009, to improve access to postsecondary education across the region.

“our investment in postsecondary educational institutions supports our economy, helps to expand our labour market and provides local access to world-class education for our residents, including the 756 simcoe county 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 currently enrolled at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ,” said warden george cornell.

“our 10-year funding commitment of $10 million has supported lakehead’s innovative programming, and ensures that simcoe county has job-ready candidates to help grow our 16,000 area businesses. this has been a two-way partnership, as lakehead has embraced our region, supported economic development efforts, and worked with the county on social and community service initiatives. having a world-class university in simcoe county is great for our own 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and helps to promote our region across the province and country.”

for dr. moira mcpherson, president and vice-chancellor of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , support from the county has ensured that the university can continue to provide access and unique pathways to education, and extensive opportunities for learning and research.

“lakehead and county council have something very special in common: we believe in the important role that postsecondary education plays in creating healthy, thriving communities,” explained mcpherson.

since the opening of simcoe hall in 2010, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has improved access to stem (science, technology, engineering, and math) programming with the addition of four degree-diploma programs through the lakehead-georgian partnership; expanded the teacher education program to include intermediate/secondary level training; and, opened the doors to improve access to continuing education and professional training opportunities with the establishment of the office of community engagement and lifelong learning.

the impact of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 also extends beyond the borders of the orillia campus and into our communities – from collingwood to new lowell, midland to severn bridge – where 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 are living, working, and contributing to the social and cultural fabric of their community: completing co-operative education placements, working in local businesses, and giving back through volunteering and community service learning. annually, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 contributes $85-to $100 million to the local economy.

“with the consistent, generous support of county council over the last 10 years, lakehead has improved access to education by breaking down barriers and offering every student the opportunity to have a transformative educational experience,” mcpherson said. “the most important outcome of your investment in our university is the success of our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , our graduates, and the citizens of tomorrow.”

lakehead orillia principal dr. dean jobin-bevans, reflecting on the impact of the orillia campus on the region over the past decade, stated, “the county of simcoe’s outstanding support of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 continues to have a significant impact on our local communities, but most especially on the 1,600 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 studying on our campus – many of whom hail from simcoe county. we are proud to be an important part of their journey, and of their life-changing university experience.”

since 2009, the lakehead orillia campus has grown from 819 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to 1,662 today, 45 per cent come from across simcoe county. in 2020-2021, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 experienced a 53 per cent increase in the number of graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 at the orillia campus. as well as a 15 per cent increase in the number of international 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 at lakehead orillia this year alone. today, there are a total of 2,511 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 alumni – from thunder bay and orillia – living and working in simcoe county.

county of simcoe is composed of sixteen member municipalities and provides crucial public services to county residents in addition to providing paramedic and social services to the separated cities of barrie and orillia. visit our website at simcoe.ca

a team comprised of individuals from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and thunder bay fire rescue gathered together on thursday, july 15 to celebrate the research and innovation award of excellence that was announced in march.

their research focused on developing occupational health and safety strategies to address on-the-job exposures linked to mental health concerns.

“our results identified how critical incident exposure manifests in psychological injury and the impacts of delivering components of the thunder bay fire rescue critical incident stress management program on members of the critical incident response team (cirt), said dr. kathryn sinden, associate professor in kinesiology at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

dr. sinden has spent the last few years working on this research with chief greg hankkio, thunder bay fire rescue, division chief of administration dennis brescacin from thunder bay fire rescue and president of the thunder bay professional firefighters association, and first class firefighter regan bolduc from thunder bay fire rescue, who is the self-contained breathing apparatus technician.

a significant impact of the research is that bolduc, supported by chief hankkio and brescacin, has led meetings with the cirt and joint health and safety committee to discontinue defusing as a strategy to mitigate negative effects of high exposure calls.

“as the primary knowledge user on this work, firefighter bolduc collaborated with the various health and safety committees within tbfr and utilized the research results to inform changes to the role and mandate of the cirt including development of a psychological health and safety committee,” dr. sinden said.

the committee has replaced the cirt and redirected focus towards identifying and providing mental health resources as support for firefighters with thunder bay fire rescue.

“our research has also had a positive impact on tbfr and indirectly, the communities they serve,” dr. sinden said.

“for example, our research focus on firefighter mental health has opened discussions in the fire stations, which has aided in reducing the long-standing stigma associated with mental health in the fire service.”

this research has also informed development of an evidence-based approach for managing firefighter mental health. protecting firefighters’ physical and mental health ensures that they can continue to serve and protect in a way that ensures a safer wider community.

“our research has demonstrated sustainable impact within tbfr particularly with modification to the cirt and the subsequent proposal of the psychological health and safety committee,” dr. sinden said.

at the research and innovation awards of excellence ceremony held virtually in march, dr. sinden and her research team received the community-engaged research award for their project, “protecting those who protect us: supporting development of a mental health management strategy for thunder bay fire rescue.”

“congratulations to dr. sinden and her partners at the thunder bay fire rescue and thunder bay professional firefighters' association for receiving the 2021 community engaged research award,” said dr. andrew p. dean, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s vice-president, research and innovation.

“this award celebrates applied research with direct outcomes for community needs, an area of research that is core to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 research and innovation. this project is an excellent example of such research, and we are certainly pleased to celebrate the achievements of this partnership,” he said.

dr. sinden and her team conducted this research thanks to two grants from the canadian institutes of health research.

july 12, 2021 – thunder bay, ont.

brianna knox of london, ont., is excited to start her lakehead journey this september after winning the university’s first-year free tuition draw.

in a draw for fall 2021 incoming domestic high school 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 coming to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 had an opportunity to win their first-year tuition for free by registering and attending virtual open houses, and many other eligible domestic recruitment webinars or meetings with lakehead recruiters.

knox will attend 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 this fall to begin a degree in psychology.

“it shocked me . . . i was just blown away,” she said after learning she was the winner.

“i was out with my family when my dad told me i have a call from lakehead . . . i picked up the phone, and this woman says, ‘congratulations, you're our free tuition winner!’, and i kept asking her if she was serious. i couldn’t believe it.”

knox learned about 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 by attending a university fair in toronto while in high school, which is when lakehead became her number one choice.

“i had a list of universities that i wanted to go to, but when we went to the fair and i saw the lakehead presentation, the people there were so nice . . . i just felt something click,” she said.

“lakehead is a small school, it’s community oriented, and it's in a really cool city,” she added.

“it just seemed right. i was looking at their classes and their programs; they have so much to offer. lakehead truly has so many interesting courses that i don't know how i'm supposed to choose which ones i’m going to take.”

knox is looking forward to moving to thunder bay as she loves the landscape of the region, which she has visited while camping with family.

when asked what she will do first when she arrives, she said, “once i'm settled in, i’ll probably walk around campus and try to find my classes.

“i don't want to get lost, but that's one thing i like about it, it is a small campus, and even the residences are really close to the school. i will probably check out the library, student central, and figure out where everything is to make sure i don't get lost on my way to find my lunch,” knox said, adding that she is still pinching herself that she won her first year tuition for free.

“i just keep getting more excited so i just have to wait and see what happens in the fall.”
