阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and health research institute team exploring new diagnostic drugs for cancer

october 2, 2020 – thunder bay, ont.

the canada foundation for innovation (cfi) has provided a 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and thunder bay regional health research institute team with a $98,655 grant to develop new drugs that will help prevent, diagnose and manage cancer.

in canada, cancer is the leading cause of death, which is why dr. jinqiang hou, an assistant professor of chemistry at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and research chair at the health research institute, believes an effective diagnostic method would improve the quality of life of many people while reducing health-care costs.

“our research aims to design and prepare novel diagnostic imaging agents that could potentially improve prevention, early diagnosis and management of cancer.”

dr. hou is working with dr. michael campbell, an assistant professor of chemistry at lakehead and a research chair at the health research institute, and dr. justin jiang, a professor in chemistry at lakehead.

while a biopsy is the only way to diagnose most types of cancer with any level of certainty, biopsies are invasive. dr. hou and his team are exploring a non-invasive detection method known as positron emission tomography (pet) imaging.

“by developing an imaging agent that targets receptors on the surface of cells that are highly expressed in many cancers, our research has the potential to develop the next generation of accurate cancer diagnostics,” he said.

dr. hou thanked cfi for the grant, which will allow the team to purchase equipment that will significantly improve productivity and speed up the research progress.

“this generous funding from the cfi strengthens our patient-centred research program and supports our researchers to find solutions to regional health care challenges – solutions that often have global applications,” said jean bartkowiak, president and ceo of the thunder bay regional health sciences centre and ceo of the health research institute.

“the results of this research can potentially provide our patients with more personalized care and better outcomes,” he added.

dr. andrew p. dean, lakehead’s vice-president, research and innovation, also thanked cfi for the funding and said he is, once again, exceptionally proud of the research happening at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and the health research institute.

“this research has the potential to improve the quality of care for many cancer patients  as well as reduce health-care costs,” he said.

lakehead professors receiving more than $73k for covid-19 research

september 21, 2020 – thunder bay, ont.

the social sciences and humanities research council of canada has granted more than $73,000 to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 professors for important research related to the covid-19 pandemic.

these partnership engage grants will allow research teams to work for approximately one year on their projects.

dr. rebecca schiff, associate professor and chair of health sciences, is receiving $24,740 to examine the unique challenges of addressing homelessness in rural and remote canada during a pandemic.

the primary research partner for this project, national alliance to end rural and remote homelessness, is a sub-alliance with the canadian alliance to end homelessness, which leads a national movement of individuals, organizations and communities working together to end homelessness in canada.

until recently, there was little acknowledgement that homelessness existed in rural and remote areas in canada.

rural and remote homelessness is indeed a significant issue. dr. schiff explained that emerging evidence shows rural and remote communities experience homelessness rates equivalent to or potentially higher than rates experienced in urban areas.

“rural communities are often isolated and thus more limited than urban areas in their capacity to respond to pandemics,” dr. schiff said.

“they are particularly vulnerable due to fewer healthcare and social service resources, scarcity of soup kitchens and food banks – the lack of which has been particularly evident during the covid-19 pandemic and has significantly impacted their ability to respond to the needs of homeless people.”

dr. kathy kortes-miller, assistant professor in social work, is receiving $24,512 to explore the experience of family caregivers of ontario residents in long-term care (ltc) during the covid-19 pandemic.

dr. kortes-miller, who is also the associate director of the centre for education and research on aging and health, will work with canage: canada's national seniors' advocacy organization to increase knowledge about the questions, concerns, and expectations that family and friends have of ltc, the health system and social support networks.

“our goal is to gain greater insight into the ways ontario’s caregivers are maintaining connections during this period of physical distancing,” dr. kortes-miller said.

as was demonstrated in the recently released joint task force report on ltc observations (may 27, 2020), canada is at a critical turning point where it is essential to learn lessons that can improve the care, conditions, and outcomes of our citizens living in ltc, she added.

“we will develop recommendations informed by people who have been impacted by caregiving, isolation, grief and loss during this time period that will directly address identified knowledge, system and policy gaps,” dr. kortes-miller said.

dr. karl skogstad, assistant professor in economics, is receiving $24,305 to learn more about the economic impact of covid-19 on the economy of ontario's northern regions.

“in the thunder bay region, we enjoy the benefit of having easy access to the kilometres of wilderness that separate the region from the rest of the province and the country,” dr. skogstad said.

“this benefit comes at a cost to the region, as the resulting low population means that certain services and amenities that are available to residents in larger population centres, often are not available here.”

as canada struggles to deal with covid-19, this isolation has turned from a cost to a benefit, as the virus has not taken hold in the region in the same way it has in major cities, he said.

“despite this benefit, many province-wide policies have been enacted that do not take into account the unique circumstances of the north,” dr. skogstad said.

“we are hoping to discover whether a custom-made recovery policy for the region is advisable and whether policies to deal with future pandemics should be tailor-made to account for the unique characteristics of the region.”

dr. andrew p. dean, lakehead’s vice-president, research and innovation, said he is looking forward to learning more about the outcomes of these important research projects.

“thank you to the social sciences and humanities research council of canada for recognizing the fantastic research happening at lakehead,” dr. dean said.

“i also want to thank our researchers, who have dedicated their academic careers to answering important questions, training future researchers, and teaching lakehead’s 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .”

in 2019/20, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 will receive nearly $2 million in assistance from the research support fund to support the indirect costs of research, which includes costs for supporting the management of intellectual property, research and administration, ethics and regulatory compliance, research resources, and research facilities.

this announcement is part of $4 million in funding through sshrc’s partnership engage grants that the honourable navdeep bains, minister of innovation, science and industry, announced today.

this funding supports 172 projects and almost 600 researchers working with businesses and community partners from across canada. these grants provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making in the public, private or not-for-profit sector.

in response to the early phases of the pandemic crisis, the latest partnership engage grants competition included a special call to address covid-19-related research. over $3 million of the investment announced today will directly support 139 projects addressing this call.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s annual alumni homecoming weekend is going virtual

september 23, 2020 – thunder bay and orillia, ont.

lakehead’s alumni homecoming weekend celebration will look a little bit different for 2020 with three days of virtual festivities happening from october 1-3.

the annual festivities usually involve a weekend of in-person activities for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , staff, alumni and friends between lakehead orillia and lakehead thunder bay, however this year lakehead will offer a virtual program directly to participants – wherever they are around the world.

due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 recognizes the need to come together now more than ever to re-connect and celebrate, while looking forward to brighter days ahead. the staff at alumni house, as well as the alumni association are excited to put on a number of informative and fun events, sure to appeal to everyone.

“we have built an exceptional tradition for our alumni and friends with lakehead’s homecoming weekend,” said alumni association president karen boz.

“while it is important for us to continue to follow health guidelines so we may all remain safe, we felt very strongly that the show must go on. the opportunity to open up our homecoming program to our fellow alumni living around the world in this new online format is something that we are truly excited about,” she said.

the three days will feature interactive games, a speaker series featuring notable alumni, a delicious ale and cheese tasting event, as well as our signature alumni honours celebration, “lakehead celebrates.”

lakehead’s alumni homecoming weekend is free to attend – and everyone is welcome.  while activities will be available throughout the weekend, everyone is encouraged to pre-register as some events require an rsvp.

new canada life ingenuity community room named at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜

september 22, 2020 – thunder bay, ont.

today, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 announced a $75,000 gift from canada life to support lakehead thunder bay’s ingenuity community space – part of ingenuity, the new business incubator and makerspace located in the university’s centre for advanced studies in engineering and sciences (cases) building.

while many study groups, events, and project meetings this fall will be virtual given the covid-19 pandemic, lakehead is excited that this space will be available to 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 when the time comes to head back to campus.

“canada life is pleased to support educational initiatives like the ingenuity project aimed at helping youth grow and discover opportunities,” said jeff macoun, president and chief operating officer, canada, for canada life.

“now more than ever, innovation and creativity are important to solving social and environmental needs. we hope the mentorship and job opportunities that come from this learning- and makerspace will help set the 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , university and community on a path to even greater success in the years to come,” he said.

as a designated space within the ingenuity business incubator, the room is a comfortable open spot for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 from all faculties to meet, study, and work on start-ups. a privacy phone booth and lockers offer 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 security when working on projects, and a whiteboard wall calendar lists a variety of on-campus and community business development activities and events.

“the canada-life ingenuity community room is an essential part of the ingenuity organization. it is the place where entrepreneurial people from outside of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 can gather to develop new business ideas with mentorship and guidance from ingenuity staff,” said dr. andrew p. dean, vice-president, research & innovation at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“we’re grateful to canada life for this contribution that supports the development of this unique space allowing for the convergence of entrepreneurial activities,” he said.

community partners, such as the northwestern ontario innovation centre, the city of thunder bay community economic development commission and entrepreneur centre, and thunder bay ventures, will have on-site hours, and host meetings to discuss resources to support budding entrepreneurs when in-person gatherings are safe to resume.
