dr. andrea kirkwood, assistant professor in the department of biology at the university of ontario institute of technology (uoit), will present her recent research on storm water ponds and urban creeks, highlighting their ecological integrity and role in source water protection.

in canada, 81% of the population lives in urban areas and this number is only expected to rise. due to high population density and intensive land modification, urban regions are typically thought of as degraded environments and consequently their value has been ignored.

“as a result of mounting concerns over source water protection, both the impacts — and contributions — of urban ecosystems must be considered,” explains dr. kirkwood.

over 600 new 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will begin studies at lakehead orillia this fall, including first-year 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and one-year professional education program 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 . over 200 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will be living on campus in residence.

“orientation allows 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to gain an understanding of the university environment and the support systems that are available to them,” said lakehead orillia acting dean dr. herman van den berg. “the aim is to help 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 be prepared to start their academic year with confidence.”

during the three-day orientation, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will take part in a variety of social events, teambuilding activities, and many opportunities to connect with fellow 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , staff, and faculty. by the end of the weekend, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will have a better sense of their new community and what life and learning at lakehead is all about.

orientation activities are led by a team of upper-year 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who have been trained in how to guide new 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

“our leaders attend a three-day training retreat where they participate in workshops, teambuilding, and leadership activities to learn how to minimize the anxiety and concerns that are common among first-year 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ,” said katie fraser, lakehead staff member and co-chair of the orientation planning committee.

the 2013 orientation kicks off on friday, september 6 with a buffet breakfast where 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will be welcomed by lakehead president and vice-chancellor dr. brian stevenson. 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will then head downtown (orillia) to explore their new community. many local restaurants are offering a “loonie lunch” deal for the new 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

on saturday, the highlight will be a barbeque and expo beginning with a “cheer off” challenge, featuring a human formation of the letters “l” and “u”. the expo will introduce 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to campus and community groups, showcasing opportunities to volunteer or get involved with recreation and athletic activities. the day’s activities will wind up in midland, where 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will climb aboard the miss midland for a boat cruise, complete with food, fun, music and dancing.

on sunday, the final day of orientation, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will experience the ultimate school spirit event. following a corn roast and pep rally, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will head over to rotary place for the second annual orientation cup. the lakehead thunderwolves hockey team will face off against their cross-town rivals, the georgian grizzlies, in hopes of defending their 2012 title.

the 16^th canadian semiconductor science and technology conference (csstc 2013) will attract more than 100 professors, graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , researchers and industry representatives to thunder bay next week.

hosted by 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and the thunder bay regional research institute (tbrri), csstc 2013 brings together the brightest canadian minds from universities, research institutions and industries to discuss the latest semiconductor research.

this is the first time the conference has been held in thunder bay. it will be at the best western nor’wester hotel & conference centre from monday, aug. 12 to friday, aug. 16, 2013.

“the fact that the semiconductor science and technology conference is being held in thunder bay shows that tbrri and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 are doing excellent research into semiconductors and how the technology can further the design of semiconductor devices,” said dr. dimiter alexandrov, an electrical engineering professor at lakehead who is the head of the university’s semiconductor research lab and conference co-chair.

“the conference will bring new, high tech commercial opportunities to the thunder bay region, such as solar cells, light emitting diodes (leds) and semiconductor lasers,” said dr. alexandrov, who has spent nearly 30 years researching semiconductors and electronic devices.

dr. alla reznik, a physics professor at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and tbrri scientist and, is also a conference co-chair. in september, 2012, dr. reznik received a $1.6 million grant from the natural sciences and engineering research council to train highly qualified personnel in medical imaging detector technologies.

“this conference not only brings together the best canadian minds specializing in semiconductor science and technology but also provides an excellent opportunity for young investigators and graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to be a part of the canadian scientific community and talk with accomplished professors, industry partners, and potential employers,” reznik said.

dr. reznik is a canada research chair in physics of molecular imaging and an expert in wide band gap semiconductors. she is working on the application of novel semiconductor materials for x-ray and gamma-ray medical imaging detectors.

 “this conference allows tbrri to further its status on a global research stage and to contribute to the consistent development of a knowledge/research based economy,” said dr. roxanne deslauriers, acting ceo of the thunder bay regional research institute. “it is a testament to the recent growth of medical research activity here. this conference would not have been held in this region just a few years ago.”

the rbc lakehead alumni golf tournament is a success each year thanks to the support of title sponsor rbc and presenting sponsor wasaya airways.

the annual rbc lakehead alumni golf tournament raises funds in order for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to live their dreams by pursuing their post-secondary education.

launched in 1983, the rbc lakehead alumni golf tournament has assisted hundreds of 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in pursuit of an education. to mark the 30^th year, the goal for the 2013 rbc lakehead alumni golf tournament is $50,000, which will help approximately eight to 10 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s civil engineering 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 placed in the top 10 at the 2013 national student steel bridge competition at seattle’s university of washington.

the lakehead team was one of 49 universities and colleges at the invitation-only competition. lakehead’s five-member team was invited in march after winning the mid-west regional competition at iowa state university.

“the steel bridge competition provides 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 with real engineering experience: planning and design, team work, essential problem solving skills and the opportunity to compete against other schools from canada, the us and mexico,” said raquel almeida, one of the 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 on the team.

“thank you to everyone who supported us through the years. without their help we wouldn’t have been able to represent 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and thunder bay,” she said.

the team improved their construction time significantly for the national competition, from 49 builder-minutes to 29 builder-minutes.

faculty advisor dr. tony gillies said he was impressed with how hard the 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 worked in the national competition. “they fared extremely well. these 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 applied their knowledge and their abilities in a very challenging competition and for that they should be proud,” he said.

lakehead president and vice-chancellor, dr. brian stevenson, congratulated the 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 on their accomplishment. “we know our graduates leave lakehead with a top notch education – these 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 are letting the rest of north america and the world know that, too,” dr. stevenson said.

this summer, two 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will cycle coast to coast across canada, cooperatively organizing 22 food drives along the 10,000 km route.

under the name foodride, the team strives to raise more than $100,000 in food and monetary donations for canadian food banks. donations will be distributed between community and campus food banks in the cities hosting the drives.

“we aim to create an open dialogue around food security,” explains foodride cyclist adrian arts. “food banks were created as a temporary emergency service in the early 80s and are now a daily necessity to a growing population. as a country we need to re-evaluate how we feed ourselves and where that food comes from.”

the journey begins thursday, april 25, 2013 in victoria, bc, and ends with a final food drive in st. john’s, nfld, on sunday, sept. 8.
approximately 900,000 canadians relied on access to food banks in an average month in 2011, according to the recent food banks canada report, hunger count 2012. findings of the united nations’ human rights council’s report from its special rapporteur on the right to food (in canada) suggest that many canadians report being hungry, but are not eating due to lack of financial means.

the report states that the growing inadequacy of access to safe, healthy food in many parts of canada brings into question the foundations of canada’s food security and the path the country is heading down.

the foodride team brings action to the issue by cooperatively organizing food drives with community and campus food banks in every province. although foodride will not cycle through the territories, online donations to the cause will be shared with food banks in the territories’ capitals.

registration has opened for activeu, a unique 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 camp for youth from grade 4 to 6 that explores recreational, educational and fun-based programming in a diverse setting.

“activeu helps bring out the best in children and youth through interactive athletic and educational activities, however it isn’t just about sports and learning,” said 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 president & vice-chancellor, dr. brian stevenson. “activeu is also about giving kids the chance to see how a university education can help them realize their own potential for success.”

from the gymnasium and playing fields, to the pool and the laboratory, campers will have plenty of opportunity to exercise their bodies and minds while improving their self-confidence and social skills under the guidance of varsity athletes and lakehead professors.

"activeu is an exciting camp for kids who are looking for new games and activities and other sports. it also offers fun and interactive hands-on activities with different departments in the university. i am really looking forward to another summer of seeing 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 at our beautiful campus,” said amanda nesbitt, lakehead athletics coordinator of programs.
