lakehead's department of anthropology has teamed up with superior science to offer grade 5-9 children the chance to become crime scene investigators (csi's) at a hands-on forensic camp. during these one-week camps, young investigative minds apply real forensic techniques, such as fingerprinting, dna analysis, forensic odontology, ballistics and forensic entomology to solve age-appropriate crime scenes.

"this is a cool way to tap into children's natural curiosity and introduce them to fascinating career opportunities," explains lakehead anthropology chair, dr. carney matheson, who approached superior science with the idea of organizing the program and then applied his skills as a forensic anthropologist to create the camp's learning modules. he adds, "anthropologists and criminal forensic scientists use the same techniques to discover the clues hidden in blood, teeth and bones, so i thought this would be an intriguing way to expose children to the mysteries of forensic science."

"forensics is such an exciting and relevant field, and we are so pleased to have this collaboration with lakehead's anthropology department," says superior science co-director, tyler drawson. "these camps give youth in the thunder bay area access to passionate, experienced forensic scientists from lakehead's department of anthropology, thunder bay law enforcement and other forensic communities."

"violence against women is as important today as it was in 1989 when 14 women were killed at ecole polytechnique de montreal," said althea annan, director of the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 student union's gender issues centre.

"we want people to feel empowered to end violence by recognizing and addressing society's hostile attitudes against women within our national borders and beyond," annan said.

a candlelight vigil and moment of silence were held to remember the women who were killed 23 years ago today in montreal.

"this important memorial recognizes the need for equal and fair treatment of women and girls. in canada and around the world, women are victims of violence simply because they are women and that must stop," said lakehead president and vice-chancellor dr. brian stevenson.

today's memorial is one of the gender issues centre's many educational campaigns focused on violence against women.

(november 22, 2012 - orillia, on) everyone who knows me, knows i love my school. it may be slightly biased of me to state that i think lakehead is quickly becoming one of the cornerstones of the orillia community. activities such as new student orientation and public lectures have quickly become integrated into the greater orillia community.

university life is becoming part of the city's culture. lakehead has taken the initiative to educate not only its 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , but also community members and elementary school 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 alike.

this fall, for the third year, lakehead ran its highly successful hands-on science program. hands-on science began as collaboration between dr. chris murray, professor of interdisciplinary studies at lakehead, and anders hagman, a special education resource teacher at marchmont public school. the objective was to enhance the math and science learning opportunities for elementary 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in a unique university setting.

the first program involved a group of grade eight gifted 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 from marchmont. "to say that this pilot project was a success would be an understatement," said hagman. "my objectives were surpassed - the 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 were so motivated that some began looking into future career opportunities in the fields of math and science."

soon other schools became interested in the program. recognizing the potential, murray approached the faculty of education with an idea to host interns enrolled in the education program. this began an innovative partnership between the faculties of science and education, and it is now the teacher candidates who design and deliver the hands-on science activities. this enables the university to reach many more elementary 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , while providing valuable experience to lakehead's education 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

"teacher candidate involvement has been a huge success," reports murray. "the program has grown to involve 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 from other elementary and middle schools in barrie and orillia, with many more schools from across simcoe county expressing interest in the program. this year, close to 200 elementary school 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 from grade 4-8 participated," reports murray.

the project received funding from the community foundation of orillia and area and would not be the growing success it is without their support, according to murray. the community foundation is an organization dedicated to supporting initiatives that "make an ongoing difference and enhance the quality of life in our community."

as an education student going into my final and professional year next fall, watching 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 become immersed in the process of learning in way that is not always possible in an elementary school setting, is inspiring. i am proud to be part of an institution that creates such innovative inroads in education. my peer and fellow classmate, brooke marion, is one of the education 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 benefitting from the hands-on science opportunity.

i could not agree more! i have heard past and current 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in their pre-professional year talk about the nerves that surround the expectations of a practicum at teachers college. i worry slightly, but i am confident of the success i will achieve. i know i am prepared because of the opportunities i have had to work with children and youth. i believe professors at lakehead like dr. chris murray understand the importance of these opportunities and do their best to support and provide these opportunities. what is great about hands-on science and other initiatives like it is that the benefits do not stay isolated within the walls of the our leed building in the west end of orillia. they reach my generation of young adults and stretch to the next generation of children and youth.

as for the future, murray explained that demand for the program is now greater than the university is able to manage. "we are currently working on a proposal to seek federal assistance, which would allow us to offer the program to the entire county."

hands-on science is a great source of excitement and learning for all the participants and i can't wait to see how great it will be next year. the benefits of my lakehead education continue to multiply. and i am continually grateful.

(december 12, 2012 - thunder bay, on)   prominent author and researcher, dr. david streiner, knows that research projects can easily get off track and will speak about how researchers can prevent that from happening. 

"dr. streiner will start his presentation by reviewing a partial list of murphy's laws as they affect research projects " for example, how anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and anything that can't go wrong will go wrong too," said lakehead's bruce weaver, research associate in the centre for research on safe driving, who is helping organize the talk.

lakehead's faculty of health and behavioural sciences presents the distinguished speaker series with dr. streiner, professor emeritus in mcmaster university's department of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics.

dr. streiner is also a joint member of mcmaster's department of psychiatry and behavioural neurosciences, and a professor in university of toronto's department of psychiatry. his presentation is called when research goes off the rails: why it happens and what you can do about it.

the purpose of the thunder bay talk is to encourage researchers to persevere. "dr. streiner won't discourage researchers; he will try to "˜inoculate' them to the realities of doing research, and give examples of how inventive researchers can be in overcoming difficulties," mr. weaver said.

university of the arctic is a network of universities, colleges, research institutes and other organizations located across the circumpolar north"which lakehead is a founding member.

"prince albert and his foundation are amazing to work with," dr. southcott says. "they are extremely knowledgeable about what is going on in the arctic and truly committed to sustainability in the region."

prince albert ii has strong links to the arctic. his namesake, prince albert i of monaco, was one of the earliest scientists to study the arctic and work on conservation in the region.

in 2006, prince albert ii created the prince albert ii of monaco foundation to fund research on the environment and sustainability"especially in the polar regions. the foundation is currently funding the north2north student exchange program at the university of the arctic (uarctic) to allow indigenous 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 from different arctic regions to share experiences on environmental change and sustainability. 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 hosts the canadian office of this program.

dr. southcott has been working with the prince albert ii of monaco foundation since 2009 as part of the uarctic's knowledge and dialogue, an initiative linking northern researchers, communities, and international funding agencies around the activities of the university of the arctic. southcott is the lead researcher in three major projects in the canadian arctic, including resources and sustainable development in the arctic, the largest social science research project ever undertaken in the circumpolar north.

chris southcott is in charge of the knowledge and dialogue programs of the university of the arctic and is chair of the research outreach program.

raised in thunder bay, as a researcher he has been involved in community-based research in the circumpolar north for over 26 years. during this time he has published over 100 scientific reports, books, book chapters, and articles dealing with social and economic change in northern canada and the rest of the circumpolar world.

over the past 10 years he has led several major canadian and international research initiatives dealing with social and economic development in northern regions. in 2001 and 2002 he successfully led a team of 12 international social scientists in the first attempt to produce circumpolar social science curriculum material for the university of the arctic. in 2004 he was chosen to be the lead author for the international conference on arctic research planning's report on research outreach (science plan 11).

in 2006 dr. southcott was awarded a major sshrc grant involving 35 researchers and 20 community partners to examine ways that community-based organizations in northern canada could better ensure sustainable development in the region. this led to the establishment of the social economy research network for northern canada for which he currently serves as chair and research director. also in 2006 he was awarded a grant to lead canadian participation in the european science foundation-lead boreas project dealing with migration in the circumpolar north.

in 2009 he was chosen by unesco to represent canadian social science in their international experts project on sustainable development and climate change in the arctic which took place in monaco in march, 2009. he is currently the principal investigator for an international project popularly known as the resda (resources and sustainable development in the arctic). its mandate is to develop ways to ensure that a larger share of the resource development benefits stay in the region for the people of north with fewer costs to communities.

born and raised in northern saskatchewan, stuesser is currently working as a professor and administrator at australia's bond university, where he has been since 2008. before that, he was a law professor with the university of manitoba for more than 20 years and he has also taught at the university of ottawa and royal roads university.

stuesser has a distinguished reputation in the canadian legal and academic community for his writings on advocacy, evidence, and criminal law.

for his part, stuesser says the opportunity to build a faculty of law from the ground up is a truly unique and exciting prospect.

"i think the law needs to serve people," he said. "i look forward to bridging the gap between the practice of law and legal education. we can make a real difference by providing well-trained, committed lawyers able to deal with legal issues relevant to rural and remote practice."

an expert in evidence, canadian constitutional law, trial advocacy, and canadian criminal law, stuesser brings to the table a breadth of knowledge that he will use to create an innovative teaching and learning model without precedent in canada. last year, his work was cited in 31 legal judgments including two judgments by the supreme court of canada.

stuesser received a bachelor of education from brock university, an arts hba from the university of winnipeg, and an arts ma from the university of guelph before embarking upon his legal studies. he earned a bachelor of laws from the university of manitoba and a master of laws from harvard law school.

his textbook an advocacy primer is used in classrooms across canada and he just completed a second edition of the australian textbook an introduction to advocacy. "nothing gives me more joy than to be told by a young lawyer that my advocacy book "˜saved him in court,' " stuesser says.
