kathy kortes-miller is currently enrolled in the joint phd in education program at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , is a research affiliate of cerah, is the interdisciplinary certificate in palliative care coordinator, and a sessional lecturer with the certificate program at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . kathy's research, "high fidelity simulation in interprofessional palliative care education," explores how the pedagogical uses of simulation technology can enhance and support interdisciplinary palliative care education. she is supervised by dr. lisa korteweg, faculty of education, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

(september 12, 2011 " thunder bay, on) the canadian hospice palliative care association (chpca) announced at its annual conference last friday evening in st. john's newfoundland, that dr. mary lou kelley is the recipient of the 2011 award of excellence in hospice palliative care. dr. kelley is a pioneering and dedicated professor of social work at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and an internationally recognized palliative care researcher.

developing high quality hospice palliative care services and education is the focus of dr. kelley's work at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . she and her research teams work in many care settings to better understand the complex issues surrounding care for the dying, as well as for their families. (august 31, 2011 - orillia, on) 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has recently learned that the opening of the new student residence at the university avenue campus in orillia will be delayed and will not be ready for student move-in day, scheduled for thursday, september 8, 2011. the university anticipates that 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will move into the residence by the end of september.

this delay will impact 110 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who are currently registered for the residence. the university will provide temporary accommodations in three local hotels for these 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , along with a full range of supports, including:

• single occupancy accommodation
• use of hotel amenities including pool, fitness room, guest lounge, business centre, 24-hour front desk
• shuttle service to and from campus
• full slate of residence life programming and events on site
• resident assistant (upper year student that serves as a mentor and peer support) in each hotel
• breakfast included at the hotel and use of residence meal plans at hotel restaurants, in addition to food services in the academic building at the university avenue campus
• moving service to transport belongings from hotels to residence when it is ready for occupancy

(september 2, 2011 " thunder bay, on) dr. chris southcott, professor of sociology at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , has been awarded a leaders opportunity fund grant valued at $87,246 by the canada foundation for innovation (cfi). this funding will offset research infrastructure costs to establish a new research network focused on investigating sustainable communities, cultures, and environments in the circumpolar north.

southcott's research project will conduct and mobilize research aimed at the sustainable development of arctic natural resources in a manner that will improve the health and well-being of canada's northern communities while focusing on the preservation of the region's unique environment.

"the arctic remains one of canada's last storehouses of natural resources," says southcott. "for many canadians, the arctic represents opportunity and potential wealth. for those living there, however, the arctic is home and is viewed and experienced quite differently."

southcott's project plans include establishing regional social science laboratories at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , as well as in the yukon, the northwest territories, nunavut, northern quebec, and labrador. support from lakehead's centre for northern studies was also valuable in enabling this infrastructure project to become a reality.

"the potential exists for finding new ways to develop resources and build capacity in northern communities," says southcott. "this infrastructure is essential to position canada as a world leader in research that shows how natural resources can be developed in a manner that can promote both local sustainability and environmental protection."

"dr. southcott's work in the arctic is a stellar example of how 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 contributes to solving real-world issues that impact populations all around the world," says 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 president brian stevenson.

this new cfi funding is related to southcott's overall project: in february 2011, southcott and his research team were awarded $2.5 million by the social sciences and humanities research council of canada's (sshrc) major collaborative research initiatives (mcri) program. contributions from all sources well exceed $6 million.

dr. rui wang, vice-president (research, economic development, and innovation), is extremely pleased with cfi's funding announcement. "continued infrastructural support for lakehead's research projects is a necessity for sustaining our research and innovation stride. this new cfi funding is testament to lakehead's growing reputation as a highly regarded research-intensive institution. the impact of dr. southcott's research will not only benefit communities in the canadian north, but also affect communities throughout the northern hemisphere."

(august 25, 2011/orillia, on) dr. doug west, associate professor with the departments of interdisciplinary studies and political science, is new to orillia, but certainly not to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . west recently moved to orillia from thunder bay, where he was a faculty member for the past 20 years, five of which, as chair of the department of political science.

west brings with him a passion for community-based research and learning. in the few weeks since his arrival, he has initiated projects that will benefit both the orillia campus and the community.

this summer, west was instrumental in developing a partnership between the university and the couchiching institute on public affairs. the partnership, explains west, is an example of how community-based research and learning works and why it makes so much sense. "community-based research is a practical way to connect the research interests of faculty and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 directly with the needs of community organizations, and vice versa. as the university reaches out to assist community partners, we simultaneously give 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 opportunities for hands-on learning."

the partnership with the couchiching institute is doing just that. two 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , along with west, attended the institute's 80th annual conference held earlier this month at geneval park on lake couchiching. this year's event, "from the ground up: civic engagement in our time," examined the ways individuals and organizations influence and shape civic life and public policy.

"the couchiching institute on public affairs is canada's oldest public affairs forum and has a mission of increasing awareness and understanding of public issues among canadians," notes west. "participation at this conference is an outstanding opportunity for our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 . it gives them the opportunity to come face-to-face with world leaders who are making global decisions."

kaylen leonienco, a third year social work student, participated at the conference and thought it was "definitely worth attending." leonienco said she especially enjoyed the diversity of the conference delegates. "i was inspired by how many young professionals were there, along with political figures and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 . we were all able to interact together for in-depth discussions - i would recommend this experience to my classmates and feel so fortunate that i was able to attend this year."

the value of the conference experience was shared by timothy michano, a fourth year political science student at lakehead's thunder bay campus. "not a stone was left unturned in terms of delegates, guest speakers and topics," says michano. "the information flowed as one to become a river of valuable information that i will share with others and hopefully inspire them to attend in future years." michano added that the most valuable part of the weekend was meeting people with similar interests and making new friends. "they are valuable contacts and will not to be forgotten."

in addition to student attendance at the annual conference, the partnership with the couchiching institute will incorporate a community service learning component for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 enrolled in professor west's political science class. the community will also benefit from a series of "couchiching round tables" to take place throughout the year. the round tables will be open to the public and will feature special guest speakers who will lead discussions on civic engagement and other topics of interest.

the partnership is just the beginning of what the community can expect to see as a result of west's energy and passion.

another exciting initiative for the orillia campus is the expansion of the university's inventive humanities 101 program. the program has been running at the thunder bay campus since 2006 and will be offered in january 2012 at the orillia campus under west's direction. "humanities 101 is a community-based outreach program designed to provide access to a university experience for those who face financial and other barriers," explains west. "we've had remarkable results with the program in thunder bay."

west has set up a committee of faculty members and community partners who are now working together to plan and deliver the program. "i am excited about what we can do together," says west. "the interdisciplinary focus of the orillia campus supports this kind of initiative and other community-based activities." west adds that he has been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm he has discovered since arriving in the area. "i'm very happy to be here and look forward to what we can accomplish together."

(july 25, 2011 " thunder bay, on) lakehead master of public health student, zsolt toth, is turning his thesis research into an on-the-ground health education project for aboriginal people with type 2 diabetes. zsolt is completing his master of public health degree at lakehead part-time through a distance education platform and has used his thesis results to help improve outcomes for clients in his professional occupation.

zsolt toth, a diabetes dietitian educator with the noojmowin teg health centre on manitoulin island, conducted focus group sessions as part of his thesis research: an exploration of the impact of cultural food beliefs and attitudes on the acceptance of the dietary recommendations for type 2 diabetes. "participants in one of the sessions stated that they felt having a diabetes education teaching booth at powwows would be helpful, sort of a "˜diabetes first aid' information booth," says toth.

armed with this feedback, the newly formed diabetes wellness program, nogdawen dissun, spearheaded a successful proposal submitted to the northern ontario aboriginal diabetes initiative, to provide a diabetes wellness interactive health information tent. the diabetes tent, using principles of the medicine wheel, is divided into the four directions of the medicine wheel with each direction representing a different aspect of health: mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical. each health aspect has activities and information to help educate and support persons with type 2 diabetes.

vital to the success of the diabetes wellness interactive health information tent is the ongoing collaboration between the diabetes wellness team and area first nation health staff as they work together to provide activities to powwow participants.

each aspect of health has interactive activities to support learning, health, and healing:

mental health: portion control visuals, blood sugar teaching tools, brochures
physical health: golf putt and/or hockey shooting activities
emotional health: art expression activity, such as creative mask-making
spiritual health: mini-massages and four sacred medicines

the tent is currently making its way to seven first nations communities in the manitoulin island district at each community's powwow. as visitors enter the tent, they are given a colourful medicine wheel "˜passport' that allows them to travel through the four different activity tables representing the four areas of health. individuals have the chance to assess their diabetes self-care and learn ways to balance their self-care activities through application of the medicine wheel teachings. once participants have completed their journey through the activities, they can enter a draw to win a mountain bike.

all participants can choose to leave their contact information with the nogdawen diabetes wellness team " angela shawanda, rn, diabetes nurse educator; isabelle simon, rn, advanced foot care nurse; zsolt toth, rd, diabetes dietitian educator " for a follow-up appointment. the team has already received solid interest from community members who would like a diabetes wellness or prevention appointment.

thesis supervisors, drs. ian newhouse and marion maar, are thrilled with zsolt's translation of scholarship to action, "zsolt has done an excellent job of collaborating with first nations on this initiative. this is a great example of participatory action research. our master of public health program encourages all of our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to make a real-world difference and we think it's to everyone's benefit when course work can dovetail with what they're doing in their professional lives."

to date, the diabetes wellness interactive health information tent has attended three powwows in aundeck omni kaning first nation, sheshegwaning first nation, and sheguiandah first nation. the initiative is scheduled to travel to four more area powwows in wikwemikong first nation, zhiibaahaasing first nation, whitefish river first nation, and m'chigeeng first nation.
