expectation values: what can quantum computers actually do?
quantum computing is an emerging technology that has been experiencing significant hype. however, we still do not know when (or whether) it will live up to our expectations. in this presentation, i will explain what quantum computers are and how they work, and survey the field's progress in both hardware and software. i will demystify what quantum computers will (and will not) be able to do, and how our society stands to benefit from them.
about the speaker:
dr. olivia di matteo is an assistant professor in the electrical and computer engineering department at ubc, and the tier 2 canada research chair in quantum software and algorithms. she holds an hbsc in mathematical physics from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and a phd in physics (quantum information) from the university of waterloo and institute for quantum computing. prior to joining ubc, she was a quantum information science associate at triumf (canada's particle accelerator centre), and a quantum computing educator and researcher at the toronto-based quantum startup xanadu. at ubc she leads the quantum software and algorithms research lab, whose work focuses on developing quantum programming tools and using them to solve physics problems. she is dedicated to making quantum computing accessible to everyone through the development of open-source software and freely-available educational resources.
