iana petrus is from novomykolaivka, ukraine. in the past she coordinated student mobility programs and facilitated an intergroup dialogue to promote understanding among indigenous and international 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in canada. currently, iana offers mediation services in her role of a human rights officer with the government of alberta. she enjoys learning spanish and french languages as well as reading postcolonial novels to understand how societies in africa, south america and eastern europe can learn from each other as they develop creative ways of dealing with postcolonial realities.

the russian military aggression currently at play at the ukrainian border may come as a surprise to the international community, but not to ukrainians who intimately know the bitter taste of russian imperialism. throughout the soviet union, the russian leadership made all possible efforts to suppress the national identities of the countries that were forced into the union. in the context of ukraine, stalin’s orchestrated famine holodomor, inhuman industrialisation and forced russification were used to impose russian language on millions of ukrainians whose sovereignty was subordinated. after the collapse of the soviet union, russia, its official successor, was adamant to recognize the colonial nature of the soviet regime and has continued to use its military, economic and cultural strengths to establish control in now independent countries. the presenter will use post-colonial theory to analyze russia’s military invasions in moldova, georgia and ukraine in the post-cold war era and will share how thousands of ukrainians, including herself, are adopting decolonization and decommunization as powerful tools to unite against the aggressor and defend their country.

reuse of open data is making scientific findings more statistically robust and leading to exciting new meta-analytical discoveries. data reuse makes science more reproducible and makes best use of the hard work and cost of data collection. best of all…data reuse means that you can find some fun data to play around with!

this workshop will approach dataset searching in two sections: 1) we will first discuss what motivates researchers to find and reuse others’ data, that is, we will discuss some practical circumstances that require finding and using other researcher’s datasets, and 2) we will compare resources and tools for finding datasets, including the federated research data repository, scholar’s geoportal, kaggle, and even curated newsletters and blogs by leaders in various data communities.

this workshop is a part of the “where to start” data workshop series. this means that the point of the session is not to deliver a step-by-step tutorial. instead, we aim to help you to identify the best resources to begin a sustainable, practical journey to the form of data literacy that best suits your needs. each workshop is a stand-alone experience, though they are offered in an intentional sequence.

on thursday, february 24, the faculty of engineering is hosting a guest speaker from tesla on the topic: capabilities of energy storage.

josef tadich leads tesla’s engineering team in the asia-pacific region, and is based in melbourne, australia. he joined tesla in 2015 where he leads the engineering team in apac and has designed some of the world’s biggest batteries.
