thesis title: 3d gpu-based image reconstruction algorithm for the application in a clinical organ-targeted pet camera

abstract: functional medical imaging is unique in its ability to visualize molecular interactions and pathways in the body. organ-targeted positron emission tomography (pet) is a functional imaging technique that has emerged to meet the demands of precision medicine and has shown advantages in terms of sensitivity and image quality compared to whole-body (wb) pet. a common application for organ-targeted pet is oncology, particular breast cancer imaging. in this work we present the application of graphics processing unit (gpu) to significantly accelerate reconstruction of clinical breast images acquired with an organ-targeted pet camera and reconstructed using the maximum likelihood estimation maximization (mlem) algorithm. the pet camera is configured with two planar detector heads with a sensing area of 232mm×174mm. acquired raw image data are converted into list mode format and reconstructed by a gpu-based 3d mlem algorithm that was developed specifically for the limited-angle capabilities of the planar pet geometry. the algorithm applies corrections including attenuation and scatter to provide clinical grade image quality. we demonstrate that a transition from originally developed central processing unit (cpu) to newly developed gpu-based algorithm improves single iteration speed by more than 400 times, while preserving image quality. the latter has been assessed on clinical data and through phantom tests performed according to the national electrical manufacturers association (nema) nu-4 standards. the gain in reconstruction speed is expected to result in improved patient throughput capabilities of the clinical organ-targeted pet. indeed, gpu-based image reconstruction reduces time needed for a typical breast image reconstruction to less than 5 minutes thus making it shorter than the image acquisition time. this is of particular importance in improving patient throughput and clinical adaptation of the pet system.

thesis title: quantifying the impact of twitter activity in political battlegrounds

abstract: it may be challenging to determine the reach of the information, how well it corresponds with the domain design, and how to utilize it as a communication medium when utilizing social media platforms, notably twitter, to engage the public in advocating a parliament act, or during a global health emergency. chapter 3 offers a broad overview of how candidates running in the 2020 us elections used twitter as a communication tool to interact with voters. more precisely, it seeks to identify components related to internal collaboration and public participation (in terms of content and stance similarity among the candidates from the same political front and to the official twitter accounts of their political parties). the 2020 us presidential and vice presidential candidates from the two main political parties, the republicans and democrats, are our main subjects. along with the content similarity, their tweets were assessed for social reach and stance similarity on 22 topics. this study complements previous research on efficiently using social media platforms for election campaigns. chapter 4 empirically examines the online social associations of the top-10 covid-19 resilient nations’ leaders and healthcare institutions based on the bloomberg covid-19 resilience ranking. in order to measure the strength of the online social association in terms of public engagement, sentiment strength, inclusivity and diversity, we used the attributes provided by twitter academic research api, coupled with the tweets of leaders and healthcare organizations from these nations. understanding how leaders and healthcare organizations may utilize twitter to establish digital connections with the public during health emergencies is made more accessible by this study. the thesis has proposed methods for efficiently using twitter in various domains, utilizing the implementations of various language models and several data mining and analytics techniques.

event contact name:
sierra garofalo
event contact e-mail:

in june 2022, lusu officially launched the rebranded food resource centre. it is a safe space where any lakehead student can come to access food in an emergency situation. in addition to emergency food support, the lusu food resource centre also provides 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 with educational workshops (such as cooking classes), programming (such as the people's potato and the good food box), and volunteer opportunities.

we are hoping to bring back the annual departmental food drive challenge with some new changes! we greatly appreciate all of the work, passion, and dedication each department had for this challenge.

how it works:

  • donations are welcome all year-round!
  • donation boxes will be delivered to offices during the last week of september. once your department's box is full, bring it to the centre or give us a call. we will keep track of the items donated by each department.
  • a first semester preliminary count will take place in december. final totals will be calculated at the end of the second semester (april) and the winner will be announced!

what items are needed?

  • non-perishables (e.g., canned beans, canned tuna, dried lentils, rice, canned vegetables, etc.)
  • fresh fruits, vegetables, bread, eggs, and other produce
  • frozen vegetables, fruits, and meats

donations can be dropped off to the lusu food resource centre (room uc 2014 b) monday to friday between 9 am and 4 pm

the department of history and the finnish chair advisory committee welcome faculty, staff and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to attend the launch of lakehead graduate samira saramo’s book, building that bright future: soviet karelia in the life writing of finnish north americans.

in the early 1930s, approximately 6,500 finns from canada and the united states moved to soviet karelia, on the border of finland, to build a finnish workers’ society. they were recruited by the soviet leadership for their north american mechanical and lumber expertise, their familiarity with the socialist cause, and their finnish language and ethnicity. by 1936, however, finnish culture and language came under attack and ethnic finns became the region’s primary targets in the stalinist great terror.

building that bright future relies on the personal letters and memoirs of these finnish migrants to build a history of everyday life during a transitional period for both north american socialism and soviet policy. highlighting the voices of men, women, and children, the book follows the migrants from north america to the soviet union, providing vivid descriptions of daily life. it brings readers into personal contact with finnish north americans and their complex and intimate negotiations of self and belonging.

through letters and memoirs, building that bright future explores the multiple strategies these migrants used to make sense of their rapidly shifting positions in the soviet hierarchy and the relationships that rooted them to multiple places and times.

- dr. bharat maheshwari, director, futurelab and mba programs, odette school of business, university of windsor

abstract

cw-e is a living lab and example of how organizations can collaborate to get better services, foster innovation, and attract investments to the region in an economically viable and sustainable manner. it is located in windsor-essex region, a multicultural community also known as the automotive capital of canada.

our presentation discusses cw-e’s journey of evolving from a research centre in the university of windsor to an independent organization driving digital maturity and several intelligent community partnerships and initiatives by servicing its stakeholders and consortium members in both public and private sectors. the key question we address is:

how does a community founded on a “build-and-grow paradigm” sustain itself in a world pressured to embrace and procure new technology in order to improve and manage costs, innovate, and advance? what are some of the pitfalls and opportunities?

set up as ngo, cw-e has brought together educational institutions, public, and private sector organizations in the region in a unique partnership. it has been able to leverage this partnership to create new services, improve current services, and provide stimulation for digital maturity, advancements and investments in windsor-essex region. the organization has also been able save significant amounts in costs for the organizations in the region by providing shared services and leveraging joint demand by negotiating better service and pricing. we look forward to also discussing opportunities for collaboration across regions and building new partnerships.
