the placebo effect: is expectation even necessary?
research evidence suggests that the placebo effect is responsible for a significant component of the therapeutic outcome of many medications. the expectation of being influenced by a drug is supposedly what underlies the effect. yet compelling evidence suggests that individuals may derive benefits of placebo interventions even when they are told beforehand that they will be receiving a placebo. this presentation seeks to critically evaluate the latest research evidence highlighting the brain areas and cognitive processes involved in this captivating phenomenon.
